This is not Paxville or Core 2 or similar technology, It is Tulsa that was just released 8/29/06 by intel. It is one of the few last vestiges of the Netburst lineage. RIP

A 4 way woodcrest system with similar ram and other specs IMO would outperform this system.

chapel

Doesn't Microsoft recommend disabling hyperthreading when used with Windows 2003 server and especially with SQL Server?

This article is all I could find in a quick search, but I'm pretty sure it reflects Microsoft's official stance on the subject.

BDF. This is not a Core 2 Dou, they are Xeons, 7000 series Xeons, but still not Core 2 Dou's.

I have four of the 6850's in a VMware cluster with 64G of RAM each. They are nice machines. I also have a pair in an MSSQL cluster.

Also, Microsoft does not license by the CPU, they license by the socket. A socket with 4 cores, is still one socket. You could put your self together a quad core, dual socket machine and it will still run XP.

"Windows" does not charge per-CPU. Different version of Windows support different numbers of CPUs. But if you're gonna be running SQL Server it will probably be in a cluster anyway so you'll be using Enterprise Edition and it won't matter.

SQL Server is licensed per cpu, but it's per physical CPU. So in this case they need a license for 4 CPUs, not 16.

RMD

It's been shown that SQL server and things that are highly threaded with high memory usage don't fare so well with hyper-threaded CPUs. It can actually hurt performance quite a lot if the cores get into a cache-thrashing state. You'd be better off with 4 dual-core Opterons like what Sun has been selling for quite some time now, and for about the same price.

In short: Slower than a Sun. No Wifi. Lame.

wcspxyx
