The big problem for iriver is that there's just too many upcoming players, and consumers would not know which one is THE one. There's the W10, the Clix(2?), the S10, the T10, the H10, the E10, the U10, the S7, Unit 2, and god calamity! Luckily Apple "hid" its old players on apple.com/ipod when the 5G iPod was released and only advertised the current three!

PenaltyKillah

I have an iriver S10 and it's super awesome fantastic and way better than a screenless shuffle. I like to play the songs i want when I want and I love the visualizations and the clock is beautiful and it's so tiny, smaller than a battery. The color is vivid and the d-click system means no crappy buttons everywhere...sweet. I will stop ranting now. If you want to buy a shuffle fine, it's way cheaper, but the s10 is a beauty. People come up to me and ask me what it is all the time.

PrincessJJ

I purchased an I-River S10 while here in Korea. I have had it for about a week. Here are my observations:

The sound is excellent. The headphones are nothing special (I bought some Sony EX-51's, which don't clip hold, but sound great for around $30. You have a lot of control over the bass, field width, there is an EQ, etc. You have a fair amount of functionality here. I also demo'ed the I-River S7, which is about the same size, but doesn't have a screen. Sound seemed identical (through stock headphones), although the S7 has an external button to change between some preset audio settings (less functionality, but great sound). I sometimes wish there were a preset button on my S10, as clicking and hunting through menus on the S10 can get annoying.

There is a problem with the clock. It keeps time UNTIL you start going into settings menus and adjusting things. Then, for some reason, the clock falls a few minutes behind. The problem compounds itself over time, and a few days later, you'll find your clock is off by 10 or 20 minutes. This is probably a firmware issue they haven't figured out yet. The clock is fine if you make no settings adjustments to the unit, but you'll find yourself changing settings all of the time.

The S10 (and S7) both play loud and clear at various volume levels (until maybe above the 85 to 90% level, where some distortion is present). No problems here, and there is plenty of good sound.

My biggest beef with the S10 is that it took me 15 minutes to figure out how to set the screen so that I could watch the "dancing lights" without the screen going black. And I still fiddle with it for 3 to 5 minutes every time I attempt to change this. The menus are very confusing in this regard, and there are different settings in different locations controlling what happens to the screen saver and the LCD backlight. They are two different entities in two different places. Sometimes, you are required to push and hold the right side of the screen to save a setting, but you're not necessarily prompted to do so. The same can be said for finding some menu items, which you wouldn't know were there otherwise.

And yeah, the reviews about the software are correct. Use it to update the firmware from time-to-time, but otherwise forget about it. It's easier to simply drag and drop the files via Windows.

baccusboy

There really isn't much in the size between the iRiver and the iPod Shuffle. This neat graphic shows quite accurately how they compare http://www.sizeasy.com/page/featured. The shuffle is 1.07 x 1.62 x 0.41 inches and the iRiver is 1.2 x 1.6 x 0.33 inches. Must say I'm impressed how the iRiver squeezes a display into this size too.

humblefrog

Nice design, I'm sure the price will be near Apple's new 1gb shuffle for competition grabbing. Definately worth considering - like the DClick system (until it starts clicking accidentally in your pocket depending on sensitivity)

Personally not a fanboy - prefer the openness and usability of the iAudio's personally (wish they'd just take out an iAudio 6 with flash rather than a small hard drive - who's idea was that one???). However, design-wise I'm probably going to get a shuffle because it would be great for going running - no bouncing in pockets or around your neck. Not a main player, just a small extra for those moments of excercise :)

Raz

The main thing that makes the Clix really nice is the Macromedia Flash-based UI. The CNET page says the U10 won't support Flash so it probably has a pretty clunky UI.

kanefsky

I've long been a fan of iriver but this thing has an 8 hour battery life, that's really too low these days. Shame though as in all other aspects it absolutely blows the shuffle G2 away. Better off getting a Clix and having video support, a bigger screen and a long battery life.

Fluidity

iRiver were never that bad - personally I prefer iAudio, but prefer flash players so alas the iAudio 6 (stunning and impressive) is a no-go due to it's hard drive (every review states this slows down response compared to similar flash units around).

so anyway - comparisons:

iRiver s10
Weight: 17.5g
Dimensions: 42 x 30 x 10.8 mm
Interface: USB 2.0
Size: 2gb
Battery: 8hrs
Price: ??
Support: ASF, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, WMA, BMP

ipod Shuffle (2nd gen)
Weight: 16g (0.55 ounces)
Dimensions: 41 x 27 x 10.4
Interface: USB 2.0 via dock (audio jack ???)
Size: 1gb
Battery: 12hrs
Price: $79 (£55)
Support: MP3, AAC, Audible (formats 2, 3 and 4), WAV, AIFF

Both flash players
usb via dock seems a bit odd to me, don't know how they'll up the speeds to real usb 2.0 over that. As far as open formats go the iRiver seems way better.

Personally the clip does it for me. Not as a main player, but for running and excercising I'll probably get a shuffle. However as a main player? Don't know yet - personally a flash version of the iAudio 6 would be ideal - they're open access and design makes me prefer them over other similar products.

Raz

and of course i preordered a shuffle last night

so lets see here, for the fruit i get:

~ a clip (w0w)
~ no screen
~ half the storage of the s10
~ "new" earbuds (which i'll never use)
~ custom laser ingraving (visible via microscope)
~ 12hr battery (makes me feel good, not all that useful seeing as 8hrs is plenty)

if this iriver isn't at least $149 i got gyped

wishnias

Looks like a SUPER TINY version of the Clix, which is an amazing player. I'm curious to get my hands on this. Looks hot and as small as Apple's new shuffle, but with a kick-ass OLED screen!

Kamalot
