I think Zune-Online.com is right. Probably about 60 percent of ipod owners aren't loyal apple customers. However, the same 60% has no clue that a widescreen/touchscreen ipod is in the works or that an iphone is in the works as well. The reason why the ipod is so popular is because it is a fad. It's kind of like that North Face Fleece Jacket you always see everyone wearing. This is why the Zune will never take up as much of the market as the ipod has. Also those same 60% probably could care less about rushing out and buying the newest ipod and are perfectly content with the one they have until it craps out on them. I'm sure there will be a 2G version but will be surprised if we see a 3G version of the Zune.

For the iPod-iTunes thing, one of hte nicest things about iPods is the large amount of 3rd party software support (yes, you DON'T have to use iTunes!) - you can use WinAmp (with mlipod), and a variety of other 3rd party apps to access the iPod. (There may even be a WMP plugin, too).

One of the outcomes of the initial Mac-only release of the iPod, I believe. Helped by the fact that the iPod acts as a regular USB mass-storage device so accessing it is trivial...

i don't really mind the iTunes interface, but it's a ridiculous processor/memory hog. It also sucks that when you import songs into iTunes it makes a copy of the file in a new folder, and you have to manually delete the original. WTF

Actually, I'll accept the results as valid but inconsequential (Headlines are stating the results wrong.)

It is 58% of people who own iPods who are considering buying a new mp3 player.

So of less than 2000 people surveyed, probably 5-10% have iPods (my estimate is higher than actual mp3 player penetration into the market). Of this 5-10%, say 50% of them are going to buy a new device soon (also, I think that's probably high). Of this 50%, 58% will buy a Zune.

Again, if I go high, out of 2000 people, 100-200 have iPods, 50-100 are considering buying a new device, and 25-50 (here I'm rounding down for simplicity since I've gone high on all other figures) are "LIKELY" to buy the Zune. Which is about 1-2.5%.

Even if this represents some defection away from the iPod, that leaves about 4-8% of all people with iPods and of the remaining 92-98% about 5-10% "LIKELY" to buy an iPod.

There are a ton of mp3 players out there, but only a few with brand recognition. Even mentioning Creative to some of my friends yields a furrowed brow. MS is very recognizable and comfortable (as has been stated).

BTW, the link to the research organization is on this page, did anyone check it out?

They are very reputable, but their research is targeted at corporations; my company has used them and $3K is where things begin.

Look at the PC market share installed base...
There a helluba lot more PC users than Mac users.
Then, of course, there should a lot more iPod users that are PC users than iPod users that are also Mac users.

Do the math... iTunes sucks big time... If you are a PC user would you:
A- Buy a PC friendlier iPod thingy?
B- Stick with iPod?

Comparing, apples to apples, (no pun intended) iPods and Zunes are basically the same thing that provides basically the same function.

So it is my WILD guess that you would pick the OS platform that works the best for you regardless of the device.

Given the number of PC owners vs. Mac owners, I'd say that there are already large numbers of people using iPods who are giving MS a try. ABI is a very respected analyst firm. They normally target corporations with their research. You can purchase their research service for a year for a given technology and it can range from $10-25K. Given their need to protect their reputation, I would guess it is honest research.
Ppl like to buy things from companies they know, its called brand recognition. They barely know what wifi is anyway.

I think the poll might very well be true and accurate. How many "Apple" commited users are there are out there verses the "iPod" commited users? Its more then possible for an iPod user who prefers Microsoft products to jump on the Zune band-wagon because Microsoft is what they are familiar with - what they are comfortable with. Plus, how many iPod users out there were given their iPod and would then be more inclined to get a Zune with their own money? That's where the 58% comes from.

Apparently, respondents were provided a photo and description of the Microsoft Zune device before being asked about their likelihood to choose it over a competitive MP3 player - this strikes me as a horrible methodology, considering most of the popularity of the iPod is its integration with iTunes and iTunes Store. umm.. Dr. Paul, i completely dislike iTunes interface... I would much rather use WMP11.
Maybe it is just because I am more familiar with the WMP interface. I love how in WMP it is so easy to make playlists, sync devices, rearrange albums, replace cover art, and actually play music! ( unless I am missing something, I can't figure out how to make a now playing list on itunes. )

I am skeptical of any web based survey that costs $3000 to see the results of. Pretty much as skeptical as it gets.

I am also extremely skeptical that Microsoft, of all companys, can pull a freshman player in the portable game that somehow blows the competition out of the water. I would tend to believe the survey results for 2 reasons

1> While Apple has a 70-80% market share in this arena, its not like those people are apple fanboys. If they were loyal, then apple would have a much higher share in the PC arena.

2> The masses just want a product with good basic features that works well. If, and I do mean IF, MS can pull this off, then there is no reason for to stick with an iPod.

The worst conclusion this survey has for Apple is that the iPod users are not like the loyal Mac users.

The "100 million mp3 player sales till 2011 in US" estimation, could mean a large, 8 digit number, of Zunes.

Any bets these surveys are false or were worded in a way to get the answer they wanted? I want a Zune but I know 58% of ipod users don't.
Also, you said in the title " Research Says 58% of iPod Users May Choose Zune iPod " since when is there a Zune ipod? I think you meant "may choose Zune over iPod". =P

it's because iPod sucks, and even though zune sucks almost as much, the heavily advertised products bring in customers. I'm gonna get a StormBlue A9+ and smack every zune user I see. I'd smack iPod users too, but you can't pop brain cells that don't exist, and I'd end up smacking some of my friends.

I'm part of that 58%...I have a 5G ipod now and would probably choose the Zune next.

Why?

FM radio and subscription music.

I would go broke trying to keep up with my appetitte for music at 99 cents a song. Instead I leave the iPod at home most days. "Unlimited" sounds real nice...and FM for when I'm sick of thinking about it... let someone else drive for a while.

I've always thought that a great deal of the mainstream (ie, non-fanboys) iPod users would switch to a non-Apple product if given the chance. I know I plan on getting either a new widescreen Creative or Zune, myself.

I'll consider one if the software to manage mp3s on the device is better than itunes or winamp's plugin for ipods. I hate itunes. Hopefully Microsoft can make theirs better than any of the creative players' software I've used in the past with their devices.
