It plays music, movies, you have outlook, hotmail, text messaging , Querty keyboard, GPS , if you dont have GPS receiver its okay, you can just load maps and take offline directions, office suit. read ebooks. play games. Download tons , tons of games. and software . your choice with windows mobile is unlimited. you can do many things. Windows mobile PDA is so cheap when compared to Junky iphone. BEWARE OF IPhone fantasy and frill... Beware you are also stuck with AT & T and a TWO year contract........ With other GSM windows mobile PDAs you have choice to use any SIM card in any country.. I find it hilarious that people still post what that make after/before making a comment to, perhaps, give that comment some sort of importance. Is the phone expensive, absolutely! Will it go down, absolutely! If you want to waste your money and be the first to own a ipod, then do it. If you want to be smart then wait for the price to go down. The proce issue is a matter of simple economics:supply and demand.
On another subject I have to say that Cingular "the new ATT" has proven to be a much better company than TMobile or even Verizon. Its a given they pass Sprint. Do your research please.
And stop telling us your pay structure and get a life!

2) The killer app for this thing is the same killer app for the Internet in general: porn. Do you really think that all those nerds are taking their video iPods to the bathroom stalls at work to watch Battlestar Galactica? Heh.

Most buyers of smartphones are professionals, and the reason they buy them is the email.

The people who have the ability to blow $600 on a phone are young professionals. Apple is going to miss that entire market by not making these phones compatible with push/corporate email.

I get all the fancy iPod-esque videos and music. But if it's a smartphone, I expect it to be smart - to be able to track my schedule, what I need to get done, and for me to be able to jot down stuff that I want to remember. Not just be pretty. Shiny. Pretty, shiny iPhone. Must buy.

The summary of incremental features that the iPhone has over other smartphones is a gorgeous screen and multi-touch. Lack of 3G is a minus, so in my opinion, OSX on the iPhone needs to be 100% lag-free and crash-free in order to make the iPhone a definite winner over the rest of the crowded smartphone market.

I can't wait to see the new touchscreen iPod when it happens, but I'm guessing it won't be until they can do 30+ gigs in Flash memory affordably. A hard drive version would just look to big sitting next to this thing.

Obviously it's not quite as capable as the iPhone, but then again it's $250 less expensive. However, it can play music and video, do all that funky Office crap, and make phonecalls. Just like the iPhone, just with an uglier casing.

But overall Apple put its foot in this one, and has fulfilled my innovation-less talk about Apple's mobile area, and I mean the iPods and iPhone. It took too long, cost too much, limited beyond visible notion, but, and I mean this - Apple just made Cingular that much better despite all of this. LG's Chocolate is a heavy hitter but watch how this (just from hype) wipes away all mobile phone purchasing records.

Your also going to hear a lot of MYLO (yeah Sony) like customers jumping on the bandwagon just for it being the new iPod\phone, but overall that heavy commodity statement, iPod. That alone will have everyone wanting to byte the Apple.

However, I can afford it. It'll be tough for it to catch on as hard core as the ipod did, due to that crazy price point. How many people own smartphones? How many people own ipods? I guess the market for this proudct lies somewhere in the middle. The only true drawback for me (price is not a factor; get a job) is the puny 8 gb. That's what'll make it a "meh" product for me.

In short, the price announced by apple is the price you pay for the phone. When you sign up for a new contract with cingular, you will most likely get a rebate.

Also, don't hold your breath for 3G on the first generation.

Also the capacity for that price is very meh. I recognize all the benefits of flash over HDD, but no way I'm going to spend that much, get that awesome a screen, and get only 8GB and no expansion slots.

I love the overall concept, but I hate how hard he drove home the patents issue, because usually after Apple announces a new device like this I get excited about all the companies I prefer (iRiver, Creative, etc.) using the latest iPod as thing to beat. This time around those patents might keep us from seeing other companies actually make better versions of this. Hopefully I'm wrong, though, because I'd love to see one of the big boys in wireless technology run with some of these ideas.
