Also, why would companies be interested in supplying their employees with a phone packed with so many recreational features? Calenders and internet browsers are useful, but video and music playback seem like too much fun to be having with a tool for work. (not that i would mind getting one from my job). it seems like the iphone is an all in one media and ENTERTAINMENT device...ie...DISTRACTION

That policy is set by IT departments.

If you allow employees to take any documents outside of the business, either paper, files on a laptop, email on a laptop or smartphone - it's a security risk

You have to set policies based on your assessment of that risk.

In order to provide staff with the 24/7 connectivity they expect to work email and files, F500 companies are increasingly providing remote access to Email etc. - with no way of resetting the remote device.

In fact many support OWA from any browser on the planet.

As for opening work files on the iPhone - it's OS X based, so I expect that there will be Word, Exel, PPT, etc... just like on OS X for desktops & laptops.

I strongly disagree. Security is a TOP priority, at least within every company I have worked for and all clients I have worked for.

It's not a function of a competent IT staff; it's more related to leaving your pda in a cab with very sensitive emails on it. A way to remotely reset the device is key.

I am not an IT guy, but any IT dept that I've heard of or worked with would not permit such a service (pop or imap forwarding) without strong security features.

Additionally, the ability to view office docs is a huge benefit of a blackberry.

What by chance brings over the 600$ price tag? I know it's not the complete lack of 3G, especially for Cingular which is their bread and butter.. GG Apple. It can't be the 2 MP camera, which is pretty normal, Verizon has a normal phone that does 3. So all that leaves is the storage... wow it holds 8GB. So it's a big screen version of the Nano that can make calls.

I work with plenty of fortune 500's who already use POP and IMAP clients for remote Email access, and have done so very successfully.

They all got suddenly interested in the technology when Blackberry were about to have the plug pulled on their company.

Amazing how quickly everyone wanted to use a standards based approach after that.....

The service providers proxy polls your work Email server all the time via POP or IMAP, and pushes anything new to your phone immediately.

So it works just exactly like RIMs push, and no need to install Crackberry servers on your LAN or tool up with Windoze Mobile 5.

The corp users will be fine with this - and it's so much more than any Crackberry ever could be.

My Second question, I keep hearing people complain about a touchscreen being hard to dial on if you're dialing a number... how many people on this blog, actually dial (as in pushing 7 digits) their cell phone? I mean honestly, the StarTac had a phonebook. You don't have a contacts list? Really?

1) I have had 4 cell phone companies in my 6 years as a cell phone user...Cingular sucks the LEAST. But dont kid yourself, they all are not very good.

2)Cingular is now offically part of ATT. Dont kid yourself into thinking that Cingular's network is going to remain stagnant for the iPhone. Expect them to shovel money into their network to improve it. Which leads to #3

3)At least Cingular is not arrogant enough to make Apple work on it's terms; they did the right thing by compromising, i.e. visual vociemail by rehashing the whole voicemail system.

4) Finally...don't think that Cingular's rate plans won't change either. They know that They are alienating many customers with some of their packages, and with rasing the text to .15, expect big changes in data and text price plans (price drop, more features).

Lastly, 98% of the time, it's YOUR phone that sucks, not the company. And I'll defend any of the carriers on that. I get tired of all the yuppies coming in saying that Verizon, Cingular, ect suck when their phone is 3 years old and missing buttons and a battery cover.

To me this looks like an iPod with a great screen and lousy controls bundled with a hard to use phone and a useless e-mail appliance. Obviously, I haven't touched the thing, but I'll be amazed if it's easy to use for calling or e-mail.

Oh, and the camera, who the F--- cares? 2 megapixels or 10, the optics in a device that size will suck. I've never wanted a camera in my phone or iPod and I still don't.

The PS3 on the other hand has all this great technology but no great applications for it. I'd use the iPhone all day every day. I'd use the PS3 whenever Sony puts out a game that isn't shiteous or derivative, which isn't all that often.

Say what you want about Apple fans, but make no mistake about it Apple just put out a product that is in fact, innovative. It's already better than anything else out on the market, IMHO.

Had they not made the mistake of signing an exclusive deal with Cingular this phone would have been bought by a lot more people.

I like their product I have their laptop but to do an exclusive screws too many consumers too many ways. #1 I work for state school that sells lots of Ipods so I guess this will eventually consume that business. #2 Did I mention Cingular is the scourge of the Earth?

And am I the only one who thinks that screen will get all scratched to hell after 3 minutes in your pocket? And battery life is going to be a huge issue.

I travel all over and since getting the Treo 650, have never had signal problems, whether it be in a major city in the US, overseas in China, in Argentine, in Europe... across the border in Canada.. on a ski mountain, in the woods, etc..

Yesterday, I got a 3G card to use with my Cingular service on my laptop and it was flying, so no problems with Cingular here.

In terms of the 2 year contract, TMobile requires a 2 year contract when ordering online, 1 year contracts are via their stores or order by phone. Verizon has both 1 and 2 year contracts, certain plans such as Family Share require 2 year contract. Sprint, like Tmobile, also require online purchases to be on a 2 year contract. Alltel offers both 1 and 2 year plans online.

I'm sure you can purchase this without a 2 year plan, but it would be more expensive.

iPhone will go that way for sure - In time.

VR is going to be essential for this phone to really work - no buttons makes dial and drive a nightmare - I've had experience with my t_moby MDA!

Battery life looks low - looks like we'll need desk chargers and/or car chargers for a normal working day's use.

Wonder if they'll have the Bluetooth modem piece sorted out the box, so your Mac Laptop can surf using the EDGE service?

Also, anyone see if GPS was confirmed anywhere?

In any case, the price point is not that much different from the competition (Treo, for example). However, the major difference there is that businesses buy Treo devices for their staff, and individuals buy Apple products. How many individuals can afford $600 for a phone plus the ridiculous data rates that Cingular charges? I suspect there will be a lot of surprised individuals when they start receiving monthly phone bills of $100+ due to data charges on their iPhone.

But, I have to agree with everyone else.. The look of the phone is magnificent.

My only beef with Cingular is that they have been excruciatingly slow about updating their networks here, we still only have GPRS.

Once they start offering phones with WiFi here, though, no one's going to be able to touch them.

@Kruel. You don't have to sign a new contract. Like nachobel says above, pay your monthly bill as normal. That's what I did for after my contract with Verizon ran out and I didn't have a contract for years. Though Verizon will probably keep calling you and tempting you with a free phone if you renew your contract, but otherwise you don't have to do anything.

To everyone else: CINGULAR? WTF APPLE! I was looking at their "plan" options...they blow. and if you want something with a decent amount of minutes + MMS + data...you're looking at close to $90/month, before taxes and "fees". That's insane.

The lack of VoIP mentioned leads me to believe that Apple are not doing everything they /should/ be doing to make this phone truly revolutionary.

Also, $600 w/ a 2-year contract with the devil is something I'm not prepared to pay, no matter how badly I want this phone. I've heard awful terrible things about Cingular as well.

Perhaps in June things will look different. Steve-o said something about Cingular's networks being upgraded to handle the additional features the iPhone will have (the viewable voicemail thing, plus maybe some other stuff). So, we'll see, we'll see.

I've seen similar designs on other currently manufactured phones that carry no "i" as a prefix and run on Symbian or WM5. So this is totally overhyped.

I'm sure that there will be a lot of fine good quality iPods on ebay soon because all Apple fans MUST have one.
The marketing plot is fantastic and the sucker base is huge... They will sell millions.
