First party installed means installed by iTunes, some iPod games are made by EA so its 3rd party installed by first party.

Wifi Sync, why not? Apple TV is doing it right now, why not the iphone?

So probably we will have wifi sync and 3erd party widget and apps, including games and something like OSX preview wich can read any pdf and nearly any document, quickly and easuily (its WAY faster than acrobat reader reading pdfs).

jut my two cents

Summary: no public SDK, and all apps are first party install only. Bummer indeed...
People yell into their cellphones largely because cell phones do not amplify your own voice into your ear, while landlines do.

People are used to hearing themselves on landlines, so yell to hear themselves using cell phones. (at least that's my theory.)

Apple could do a lot to stop people from shouting into their phones if the iPhone would amplify the users voice back to them.

My question: When you called your mom, did it amplify your voice in you ear?

Dmitri

ruggels,

Apples: MSRP pricing

Oranges: Street pricing

You're the one comparing iPhone pricing to MSRPs of other smartphones knowing full well you can get them at much cheaper street prices and knowing full well due to the exlusive sales agreements between Cingular and Apple the iPhone will NOT be available at less than MSRP anywhere.

But by all means, do pretend the iPhone is priced the same as other current smartphones.

Pixelantes Anonymous

The prices you quote for N91 and other smart phones are for UNLOCKED phones WITHOUT CONTRACT. Meaning that if Cingular decided to sell the N91 with two year contract you would end up paying around $299 and the phone would be branded and locked to Cingular network.

OTOH you will pay $499 or $599 for the locked iPhone with the same two year contract. So if my math is right you end up paying twice as much for the 8 gig iPhone than for the N91.

PS: There is no way the iPhone is running full version of OSX. So the perception that this is some kind of hand held computer is pure smoke and mirrors. In reality what you have is 2G phone with rich HTML browser running on EDGE and pimped up interface.

When dealing with Jobs you have to focus more on what he does not say, and info he witholds instead of what hyperbole he is singing. He says this device runs OSX therefore it's better than everything else. Well why does he not say what processor the device runs and at what speed? How much RAM does it have? Well if he did, you would be able to call him on the OSX BS. Instead we get words like "revolutionary" and "breakthrough". Pure propaganda. I say the iPhone is as revolutionary and breakthrough as the Segway.

haloguy628

I love it and will likely buy a year-after version, but here's what seems conspicuously missing that I've not seen elsewhere:

* Ebook reader?
* Umm, (free) games?
* No expandable memory. Can we get one with a Micro SD card at least? 4G fills up fast. Expandable would be nice.
* A SIM card slot on top. Wow nice and easy to steal one and pop in your own SIM card.
* Software - even pocket versions - for spreadsheets, word processing, etc.
* Can I download and view documents and PDFs when sent to me by others? Or am I stuck with the same problem as Blackberry email? What's the point of IMAP HTML if I can't download the attachment. or download an MP3 and save it on my phone from WiFi
* Quicken. What a nice partnership that would be.
* Didn't Mac's used to come with voice recognition? Yet no voice dialing on this version. Bummer.
* As always what are the technologies needed to sync with my exchange server, 3G, battery, openness and other issues already brought up.

Like I said, I love the phone, I guess I just expected a bit more in a couple areas for it to be called a "smart" phone. But yet I still want one. Super bad.

Did you notice how the Linksys iPhone on Amazon, doesn't actually have the 'iPhone' name printed on it? Ok - clocks ticking on the Chinese developing the multi-touch screen, a core OS, full HTML Email, full HTML browser, desktop quality apps, random access voicemail, with of course widescreen video and iTunes/MP3 playback, bluetooth, wifi and at least Quad band GPS - in a smartphone form factor.

They had 3,300 hours, according to John Mayer, as of the end of the Keynote.

That's assuming they work shifts, 24/7

Anyone think they'll make that deadline?

Um, do you even know what the word "knock-off" means? I never said they'd reproduce EVERY single feature.

With that said, they've already produced a fair amount of knock-off phones with html email and html browsers. They've already produced touchscreen phones with video, mp3 playback, bluetooth, wifi, and gps, and in a smartphone form factor. All of that leads me to think that given about 6 months, they can figure out how to stuff all of that into a shell that mimics the *look* of the iPhone.

mela_luvs_gizmodo

Actually, The iPhone probably costs something like $799 and $899 before Cingular agree to subsidize it. After all it's about 5 gen ahead of everyone else.

Again, this phone is for the high end people so if you're poor, there's nothing to see here, move along...

Those who are poor will have to wait until their next announcement. I'm sure they're working on a low end model.

I actually think they will release this BEFORE June. The only think holding up this phone now is the FCC. The approval process can be as soon as 2 months so I think we'll probably see this out in March or April. Just in time for next quarter's earnings.

Some of you shoudl also stop compalining about this functionality not being there or that functionality not being there. It's software driven so ANYTHING is possible. I'm sure people will design all sorts of widgets and if it's a function that many people asks for Apple will put it into the firmware updates. It's the same with the iPods now so there shouldn't be change from that strategy.

jcc123

ruggels,

Cingular 8125: $350 w/ 2-year contract last summer, probably cheaper by now. Nokia E61 at $350 on the web unlocked and with no contract.

MSRPs are one thing, street prices are another. I guarantee you, you will not find the iPhone for less than MSRP anywhere for quite some time. Meanwhile other smartphones are selling for less than MSRP everywhere.

The price is probably what turns me off the most. $600 w/ including a plan? Come on! Don't expect this phone, as nice as it is, to put a major dent in RIM's profit. Blackberry still "controls" the business end of things. The Pearl is great for regular people too.

Animate

pixelantes, read some earlier comments, most smartphones debut with an MSRP of $399-499. I'm still curious why no one is holding them to that price, but the moment apple releases a phone at $499 everyone goes apeshit. Again, yes it's expensive, but it's cheaper then nokia and sony's 4GB phone, and on par with the MSRP of phones like the 700w.

zamafir

I've been trying to get me a good smartphone for years. They don't exist. The closest thing I've seen so far was the Motorola MPX, which Motorola killed because they couldn't iron out the issues on it.

I currently have a Cingular 8125 (HTC Wizard). It sucks. It's slow, and the wifi setup requires a PHd in gadget wizardry to setup right. And the keyboard is just ok (still the best in the market, but not quite good enough).

Good smartphones don't exist. iPhone is perfect...until they announced the price.

The iPhone is about twice (or 150% with 4GB) the price as the current competition in the smartphone market. Of course it does more and better, but it still a very expensive phone.

The masses will not go for it at this price point especially if they already own a smartphone.

Still, I would expect Nokia's N-series phones to be dead in the water after this. The N-9x models with the video cameras will probably be the only ones that survive the iPhone.

Pixelantes Anonymous

Is anyone actually HAPPY with their cingular service?

A resounding "Yes!" response from these quarters! I reside in Hawaii and their coverage is astounding. People who call me long distance tell me on a regular basis that I sound a lot more clear on my cell phone than I do on my landline, and my landline phone model is a nice Panasonic that didn't come cheaply. I've found the Cingular reps here consistently friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable.

And no, I have never worked for Cingular, nor do any of my close friends or family.

I'd like to see any manufacturer reproduce this phone by June, let alone at a lower price and/or smaller size.

Don't underestimate the Chinese. They know how to crank out the knock-offs pretty quickly... only thing is God only knows what kind of SAR ratings they'd get.

I have to admit, I am not an Apple fangirl and I tend to loathe the fanboyz, but when I first saw this phone I was like omg I want one!!!!!!!!! Cuz it just looks so damn cool. Plus my contract is going to expire in about a month so the temptation is great. But right now I have a Moto Ming and the snobby elitist in me really loves how no one else has one where I live. :D

I still haven't seen any mention of VR and it is for this reason that I really don't see this catching on with the business crowd a whole lot, but I suppose only time will tell. A touch screen keyboard is a whole different beast, after all.

I can't imagine my boss, a manager who is constantly on the move, having the patience to stop, look at his phone, and dial out the number, because with a touchscreen keypad that is what you have to do. You can't just thumb your way across it and go by feel, that doesn't work. I speak from experience, because my phone only has a touchscreen with a few hard buttons on the side, so I've learned to use voice recognition a LOT.

mela_luvs_gizmodo

Its Just a basic phone in terms of features.. nothing that really stands out. Does it have the chat functions like MSN or AIM?

Well ok, a really nice display. But one thats a touch screen is bound to have smudges scrathes within days of use... so im not sure if you can really count that.

Nice voicemail feature. But really I don't think any phone being released now! Even worse that it's in June. Can justify a 600$ price tag without tri band HSDPA. Especially on Cingular! I mean really, the only reason to be on that network is for the incredible data speeds that they have in a some area's. Why in the world would you make a Cingular exclusive without taking advantage of their biggest strength?

Soft keyboard.... ewwww i can just imagine the pain in butt it will be to type on that. And also if its a soft keypad wouldn't it also be taking up the screen that your viewing on to type? So its a pain in the ass to type on and it takes up your viewing area while your doing it. Yes Mr. Jobs truely MAGICAL! teehee

Judous

This is the longest thread ever.... I'm not a crazy Apple fan although I bought their stuff in 1982 to start in computers... so here are my 2 cents worth.

I sucked in the 1-1/2 hrs iPhone presentation last night on the web from Apple's site.

Awesome device, interface, speed and web browser. Unequaled. I absolutely love it.

Would I buy one? Most likely NOT. But Why????

- I really don't need an iPod. I don't walk, I drive... so I listen to the radio. At work or Home I use the PC for all Media. I do not need a portable player in between work and home.

- As a Video Player... Excellent... You better download... Downloaded movies a for iPods are too expensive for such low rez... better buy the DVD. But transcoding movies takes a lot of time...

- As a Phone it's pretty neat but in reality is at the level of any other phone. I voice dial 99% of my calls on my V3 razor... I did not see any voice recognition in the presentation.

- Eveyone hailed to the 2 Megapixel camera!... it has no flash and my bet is that is a good as any other phone's camera. If you want good pictures... get a camera. Not a phone. My Casio EX-S600 does very good pictures and awesome video VGA with 30 fps in a unit 1/4 the size of the iPhone.

- Web browser capabilities aside, (which was incredible)... I web browse at home or work, not while driving. I like to know Cingular's rate for such massive amount of FULL WEB content... I won't be surprised the rate for such amount or data will get you a bill in the $150+ per month rate.

- Office integration??? What about work applications??? Is it just a play toy?
All smart phones handle MS Office documents and most of them PDF's... This one does not? A smart phone is only as smart as the data it contains.
Major blow here... but since it runs OS X... they might add this in the future. You would figure they would have shown that to the corporate crowd...
How about calculators, Voice recorder, memos, notes, scribbles... None of that?

My rating:
As a Media delivery device: A++
As a Phone : A
As a Camera: C
As a SmartPhone for work use: B

I'm sure they will sell more than 10M units... there are a lot of people out there with a lot of cash and willing to look hip to use an ipod phone

aec007

As for features, things like getting Google maps in there with gestures, push Yahoo email, and (!) viewing voicemails as a list. Apple had the weight to get Cingular to do some engineering so their device could offer this. What other phone manufacturer could have done that?

Trojan - I'd like to see any manufacturer reproduce this phone by June, let alone at a lower price and/or smaller size.

Or maybe you work for black-ops within Nokia and they already have 2 years into this product and are ready to launch....

Do you have any concept of how much R&D it takes to produce such a product, and how much money it takes - even if you have the skillsets available to you in the first place?

If Nokia/Motorola/Sony and the rest could do this already, then they'd have launched their iPhone clones at CES.

As it is, they are already committed to their new 2007 phones, and I didn't see anything in the CES coverage that could even touch the iPhone.

DrD

dperrella, don't be short sighted. The things you speak of are only a software upgrade away. It's pretty easy to do on the iPones since it's a "blank slate" design. You can program any fucntionality you want on it. I'm sure Apple is working on it right now and will probably launch something when it is released in June.

Heh. "Apple: Think Different" I don't see how they can have that slogan if everyone (and their mothers) buys the same device and conforms. I would LOVE to have a phone this slick. But I would HATE to conform. I went through the exact same love/hate relationship with the RAZR, but I ended up buying a SLVR instead simply because it was so uncommon yet just as stylish in my mind.

His mother's response was all too perfect in my mind: "What?" I guess the rest of the world needs to catch up to the revolution, huh? Oh, but it will. unfortunately. sigh

mrAnderson

Does anyone else find it amusing no one is discussing the cost of other 4gb and 8gb phones, ie: the Nokia N91 at $549 and $649 respectively (or $519 and $639 non MSRP)? We've been focusing on smartphones all this time, but honestly, this phone undercuts (in terms of price) most of the music phones equipped with 4 and 8 GB storage capacities... even before we figure in the smartphone features, interface, and screensize.

I thought it prudent to put it into perspective after wondering the same thing myself. And yeah there are other models I've just found the N91 so far.

zamafir

This looks like a very nice iPod with a great music playing interface and it will be an attractive device for a lot of people, but I don't think it will win over a big piece of the corporate world.

The central purpose of the corporate-oriented Blackberry models is to send and receive e-mail. It's also a so-so phone with an awkward form factor. The iPhone is also a phone with an awkward form factor and a great address book, but a lousy dial pad. It bundles in less secure push e-mail, a hard to use keyboard and a lot of features (like the music player and the camera) that don't matter to the corporation, which chooses the phone. Some corporate users might be willing to sacrifice the more usable thumboard for the cooler device, but few IT departments will be issuing them or reconfiguring their e-mail to allow POP or IMAP push e-mail.

For now, I'm sticking with my employer's Blackberry and my nano. When they make a version without the phone, I'll consider replacing my nano, but probably won't unless it's a lot smaller.

dperrella

Here's what I predict: Apple will launch lower function, lower priced phones that will go after rthe lower end phone market. It's the same strategy they have with iPods, Nano, Shuffle...etc. Imagine a touch screen phone a little bigger than the Nano! Frankly, I don't know why other phone device makers don't just sell all their assets and pack it in because they're not even close...iPhone is essentially a "blank slate" device which allows for programmers to put anything into it. For example, in order for other device makers to change certain things on their device, they have to change their buttons, look and feel, etc. For Apple, they just have to change their software. The other device makers won't have a chance because they're on a totally different cost model. It's like Dell in the early years where they cleaned house. Here, Apple's costs of new developement on the phones would be just to re-program rather than re-manufacture.

The other thing I predict is that they will launch a strick media device with no phone. This will in fact be the real widescreen iPod that we've been waiting for. Jobs wanted to really wow people and that's why he chose to launch the iPhone first. Imagine if he would have launched the widescreen iPod first, people would have thought that the iPhone was just an incremental upgrade rather than a leap. The new widescreen iPod would have the new touch interface and UI but will not have the phone fucntionality. It will also likly have the WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 and Safari on it. Obviously, it will be priced below $400 depending ont the HD size. Anyway, I can't wait for that to arrive. That's actually the device I want to get because I don't like big phones.

jcc123

"50 year olds aren't the only ones with blackberries; it's the 20 something consultants/bankers/traders who buy smartphones."
Odd I don't recall indicating they were, I do recall directly responding to a quote indicating 50 year old individuals WOULDN'T buy this. Its worth actually reading a bit more carefully.
"If you think the IT people at ANY major corporation in america will allow employees to receive email on a non-secure phone, then you are dreaming."
Odd, there's lots of smaller companies in america without rigid IT structures, which will allow their employees to use this. I work for public university, and i'll be using this as opposed to the PALM pos they've provided, I've already contacted our IT, they've got no problems with it. Man I'm sure no IT person would allow an employee to use OSX right? because it's sooo much more insecure then XP. LMAO. Windows CE devices are soo much more secure. ah ok.
"And until it has email that is well supported by fortune 500 IT departments, don't expect young businesspeople to buy these "
"support" for IMAP discounts the product how again?
"B. a huge decrease in price."
Yeah, smart-phones currently are so cheap when they come out, I don't know where I've been. The Treo 700w currently Isn't $499 list... oooh, wait.. it is on verizon... huh... weird. Well at least the blackberry Pearl is like $100. Whops, It's $399 MSRP. Weird. Even weirder, the iPhones right on with the 700w in terms of MSRP pricing, which is the only thing apple's announced... yeah... CRAZY expensive.
"Where does the SIM card go? Did Apple and Cingular throw away my ability to swap SIM's? There doesn't appear to be any info anywhere on that issue."
It might be worth, you know, watching the keynote, where we learn it simply slides into the top.
Let's get real people. lol
I, for one, welcome our new Cellular Phone overlords.

I know that a lot of folks are saying that the lack of a keyboard is a real deal breaker, but how many people can honestly say that thumbing an email right now on a blackberry or treo lends itself to anything but short emails, entering URLs, or typing sms messages?

All portable devices suck for entering large amounts of data.

At least the iPhone is a powerful computer in its own right! My PPC 6700 strains its resources simply trying to switch from portrait mode to landscape mode.

There will undoubtedly be tons of cool accessories (such as a bluetooth keyboard) that will really let the iPhone function as an almost-laptop when you need it.

Add put the camera on the front (or design some kind of cool rear view mirror) and let this thing do video conferencing! PLEASE!

I wish someone would ask the Apple rep if it can be used on a plane. Can you "turn off" the phone feature? Can you prove it to a flight attendant quickly? Also interesting to see how the market viewed the iPhone announcement.

Apple Inc. gained $7.10 to $92.57.

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. lost $11.16, or 7.85%, to $131

Treo maker Palm Inc. dropped 84 cents to $13.92.

So the market view would appear to be that Apple will go after the 'exec smartphone' market in a big way.

DrD

Similar to the iPod scratching problems, did Apple do anything with the surfaces and materials to make them scratch proof? You mentioned a rubbery feel on the screen, could this have been a built-in screen protector? With a screen that beautiful, I imagine I'll scratch the crap out of it in a week or so in my pocket, just like I did with the Nano.

contempt

Lesse, a troll is someone who disrupts a post? Then I say "he who smelt it delt it".

My understanding on the "will it scratch" issues is that the tracking feature means no stylus dragging will happen, only soft fingertip contact is required to click, but the rest, including OS "gesture" navigation is done mid-air, like you were conducting a mini symphony.

At the heart of this phone is UNIX. Consider the ramifications of that to the business world. Perhaps Apple has indeed finally grown up and thrown down the gauntlet at MS's door. Perhaps they are ready. One can only hope.

tonyb0d - any cellular provider that teams with iPhone has to implement additional services on their end, to provide the random access to voicemail for example.

So they have to invest in R&D and infrastructure in order to support iPhone as it is today.

Then they have to have a strategy to take the service from a globally ubiquitous GPS through to 3G as the iPhone develops new models in the coming years, and new features such as video calling.

Note Cingular showed such technology in action at CES this week.

Then they have to have a global presence in order to support the iPhone in more than just the US market.

That probably explains why they went with AT&T (Cingular) rather than the other smaller players.

Plus, I'm sure AT&T paid dearly to keep the iPhone on an exclusive multi-year contract, and that's just $$$ in the bank for Apple.

And sorry my postings have upset you in any way - not intentional.

DrD

JCC123, i don't know how you could say verizon is dead in the water...they have by far and away superior coverage to cingular. both my buddy and i do TONS of traveling all over the country and we have service in EVERY state with verizon, even hawaii! sure, you can't go overseas, but who cares? and as far as cingular, they're absolutely abysmal here in jersey, and their service is nonexistent in CT.

It's pretty, but it does too much.

This drives home the point about jamming too much functionality into a single device... people are going to love it or ignore it. I will personally never carry another phone that big - I don't care what else it does. In many situations, the phone is the key component - for me it has to be small, light and easy to use with one hand (and hold a charge for a reasonable amount of time). Oh, and cheap enough to justify changing it every couple of years (at the most).

I would rather this was just the next gen iPod... and less expensive. I guess I can skip this revolution and wait for the next.

huygir

About the screen.....it looks great indoors, but what about outside? Hopefully they've gone the extra mile and switched over to an OLED screen. For $500-$600 I better be able to see what I'm tapping on when I'm outside.

OLEDRevolution

Here's a hands-on from Pogue, who was still cleaning the drool from his chin yesterday but seems a little more down-to-earth in today's piece.

"Typing is difficult" -- darn it, I knew it would be, but I hoped it wouldn't. Yeah, yeah, we'll know more when we can all do a hands-on, but if an unashamed Apple/iWhatever enthusiast like Pogue actually says something negative, I believe it.

dtrain

jtsongas: But do you use your PS3 all day, every day? For me atleast the cellphone is THE most important gadget I have. I can easily survive a few days withou my computer, but without my phone I'm cut of from the world (I dont have a landline or IP-phone) So if you can pay $600 for a PS3 or $1500 for a top notch laptop, then $500-600 for a phone/multimedia device is acceptable, you need a service provider anyways just as you need a broadband provider for your PC.

krisve

Come on, that is not a real review of the iPhone. Every negative you were apologetic for. Don't apologize for the problems you found, let them know so they can fix them. Like you said, they have six months.

Now, my big question is this; Why is $600 for a phone/iPod a great price and $600 for a PS3 WAY too expensive? And remember that is $600 with a contract, probably for like $700-$750 without the contract. I have no two year contract with my PS3.

jtsongas

Well, ignoring all the "will it succeed" and "omg, it's great/sucks" talk, i'll just add a question, as this was the purpose of this topic anyway:

Brian Lam: You said that the landscape switching only worked for one side, right? Will this mean the iPhone won't be friendly at all to left handed people?
I mean, if i flip it landscape and start using my left hand, i'm pretty sure i'll cover that proximity sensor and block out the screen making it useless for me. Apple tends to make great UI, but everyone forgets something sometimes

Drezio

my personal review of the pro/con so far:

con:
-no hsdpa for 3g speeds. (edge is doggg slow in my experience, and wifi is a power hog)
-fragility will be an issue, regardless of lessons learned (or not)
-removable batteries are a must.

pro:
-omfgbbq the interface
-they kept it small and pocketable.
-the focus on web/photo/music vs. traditional enterprise smartphones (push email and such.)

I think a lot of the negative comments fall into 2 categories.

1) Hater-ade. Some people just don't understand why people are so attached to Apple. Confusion leads to fear, fear leads to hate... ;)
2) Strictly rational. As I mentioned earlier, it shares all the same basic features as any smart phone. It costs more. However, this assumes they are meant to attract these same users. This is wrong. The traditional smartphone is targeted to the enterprise business crowd. That market is not as big, or as important to Apple as the upcoming generation of people who want their web services always on. And they aren't bankers.

twonine

meeeeowww... some folks are just cold-hearted!

Take a step back, and just enjoy a great new gadget. We all read gizmodo because we enjoy the world of gadgets, and Apple has certainly made a great piece of tech.

Sure, the specs of all these smart phones are essentially the same. They all play mp3 files, they all browse the internets, they all can have gigs and gigs of storage. So whats the point of moaning about it?

If you understand Apple at all, you understand that nearly all of their innovation lies in creating a clean, thoughtful interface for the problem at hand. It may not be new, but you sure haven't seen it like this before.

twonine

Yes this phone looks sexy, yes its is going to be snapped up by people, but apart from that interface the actual content isn't that new. I haven't heard of anything I can do on this phone that I cant don't already on my nokia N70. The only difference is maybe quality, (music, video) and screen size.

I am in two minds whether this will be a success like the iPod. The reason is beacause of cost. The ipod is a relatively cheap device, you buy one and then you buy songs, or rip your CD albums for free. The mobile phone market is different. You have to buy a phone, - big bucks, you then have to pay monthly - more big bucks - So thats $600 + say $30 a month minimum here in the Uk for line rental even before you get to use it. To utilize the content you want - email, internet, sms, instant messaging, sending pictures and movies - you have to pay more! Here in the UK its per KB. I can get tv streamed to my mobile. Do I use it on the train when Im bored? No, cos it costs soo much! I would rather read a book or sit in silence than pay a lot of money for very little reward.

I think I would love this phone, but then I will look at the price plans, then look at the cost of using all the features of it and think, "hmm I may as well buy a new nokia that works great and use only the features I can afford."

djheath

the screen against the face issue will encourage users to buy the increasingly well designed bluetooth headsets being brought to market, including the very slick Apple designed one introduced today as an accessory for the iPhone. they are getting small enough and good looking enough to not make you look like a total dork wearing one. Wetzilla++
Jobs himself in the keynote says "1% market share [of 967 million phones] in 2008, 10 million units and we'll go from there." He isn't claiming this will conquer the cellphone market.

No one knows if this is a revolutionary product. History will judge, not us or Jobs. The iPhone is only better than other smartphones in its UI and some design details (and maybe the multi-touch display which won't work for everyone). But people said similar things about the iPod in 2001, it was only a revolution in hindsight.

As Wetzilla and adriang say, the iPhone will encourage changes in the rest of the high-end phone market. People who prefer a slider keyboard or thumbboard should get better software, better browsers, visual voicemail (why has it taken so long?!), WiFi etc. I hope Nokia steps up, Windows Mobile will improve (though I bet MS is planning right now to dump WM and make a zPhune), and everyone else needs to get serious about Java interoperability on an open platform so they can compete.

It's been a great day, even for the Apple haters.

skierpage

But how comfortable is it to hold a perfectly flat slab o'plastic against your face to make a phone call? What does that shiny plastic surface look like after it's been plastered to your greasy face? It looks to me like they didn't really have phone usage in mind when they built it.

Yeah, it looks good and it does lots of neat stuff, and I'm sure it will sell like wildfire once it's finally on the market. But will it be another case of the emperor with his fanny flapping in the breeze? I know quite a few people who have flat or mostly flat smartphones and hate, hate, hate making actual phone calls on them because they just don't lie right against the side of a face. But they won't give them up because gee, the thing is just so cool.

infmom

I'm agreeing with Wetzilla on this one. I think he's right on. I think it would be a very interesting exercise to conduct a Porter's 5 analysis on the industry and really see how it looks. I think apple is trying to capture much more than just the smartphone market though, and that's where the price will create the greatest challenge.

Overall, I think it's a very compelling offering for the price, but I am just unsure if there exists a large enough market to be willing to fork over so much money. I wish apple best of luck with this though, because if anything, it will force other manufacturers to improve their products.

As for DrD and security, it's 1 am on the east coast, if it's really necessary, I can call some banker friends to confirm, but I highly doubt companies feel secure having emails potentially worth millions of dollars just be forwarded to IMAP or POPs. One of the greatest things about blackberries and winmobile devices is the ability to remotely clear the device if it should get lost. I believe this functionality disappears when POP or IMAP are used (although I may be wrong). I can attest that the policies at 3 top banks would never allow IMAP or POP forwarding.

The Hoff

I don't doubt that the iPhone is probably the best offering of the smartphones currently. One of the things I'm most excited for about this phone is that it's going to force the other phone companies to implement these features into their own phones. I can't tell you how excited I got about the new voicemail system, it's something that should have been implemented a long time ago. However, I don't think it's going to be the smash hit that the iPod is, and that some people really need to look at it's flaws and criticize it, rather than just saw "it's amazing for a first try, we can ignore all the faults.

But you do have to admit that the smartphone market is currently much more defined than the mp3 player market was when the iPod came out. And from what I've seen of the current gen of smartphones, they aren't in the same category of "clunky and hard to use" as mp3 players were back then, like the Creative Zen was back then. The only smartphones I've spent a good amount of time with is a blackberry, and it wasn't very hard to use at all. I was able to do everything quite easily and without having anyone explain it to me. My father (not the most technologically inclined person) also managed to pick up on how to operate it quite quickly.

Wetzilla

Meh Wetzilla... close but no cigar in my opinion, the market is established yes, and there are a few competitors, but from having multiple blackberry's myself for work use over the past shoot... 3 years, I would not say that these are "quality". In fact I would use your exact words "... the only real options are clunky, hard to use...". Ever try training a MD or Exec on a blackberry? It's not for the faint of heart, and I'm speaking from experience. As far as popularity goes, again, that's really debatable, the curious thing to me, is that most people I know that have these types of gadgets didn't buy them themselves, they are given them by their place of work... and I don't really see apple gaining a foothold in business as this obviously isn't geared at business as much as other devices. So it's really up in the air.

djdare

I love how when anyone brings up a legitimate concern for the iPhone (battery life, no 3g support, usability of a touchscreen as a keyboard) they are branded as "trolls" and "apple haters". Yet people somehow get away with using this to insult the Zune, and no one calls them on their bullshit. This is not going to kill the Zune anymore than it will take over for the iPod.

One thing people have to realize is that the smart phone market isn't the same right now as the mp3 player market was when the iPod came out. Back then the only real options were clunky, hard to use players, that really weren't all that popular. And there were only a few models available. Every carrier now has multiple quality smartphones out, and these phones are already pretty popular. The iPod basically created the mp3 player market, while the iPhone is trying to break into an already existing one.

Wetzilla
