Hows about something like this for 3d apps? Would it work well with Maya?

telliott

We have a bunch of similar devices at work with pen-like controllers which are used for 3-D sculpting, but they're nowhere near the price of this one (I've been told the price in £UK is the low end of 5-figures).

If all the tech suddenly got a hell of a lot cheaper, it's going to be great for anyone wanting to dabble in this sort of design.

Incidentally, it's a very surreal feeling running the control point over a virtual textured surface and feeling the same texture under your hands.

Guinny

I like the idea, but I have to wonder how robust this thing will be over the long haul.
Many nights of FPS online fun later and all those mechanical joints and sensors are going to start loosening up methinks.

I'd still like to try it out before panning it completely though. -perhaps over many nights of FPS online fun!
It would have been fun to be on the testing team.

strider_mt2k

The number peripherals dedicated to gaming that have launched and failed within the last 10 years is huge. They all fail for one of three reasons; they fail to provide a significantly better gaming experience, they are too expensive, or they lack support from developers. This device clearly fails for reasons 2 and 3, and probably 1 as well. Especially with competitive gaming, where people actually care to spend that kind of money on a peripheral, this device actually makes things worse not better. For all the love this is getting, it's DOA.

weatherman

Sorry, it would just be too weird to fire a gun from a 'handshake' grip. Who shoots a gun like that? On the screen the gun is held (virtually held of course)in a 'gun-like' grip, not a 'handshake' grip.

Freebadeebadingdong

I used a similar device at my university's virtual reality centre - http://www.sensable.com/haptic-phantom-desktop.htm

It is incredible how much true haptic feedback provides in a virtual environment. That said; I doubt this 3D game controller will be providing the level of feedback the Phantom was, given that it's going to be 1/100th of the price.

Anjow

Well, this isn't aimed at those who want to increase their frag numbers, it's for those looking for immersion and realism.

Adamantite

Why do you think the military has invested so much $$ in recoil-less guns?

Force feedback (or any artificial motion feedback) for guns is ridiculous - huge reduction in speed and accuracy for "realism"... Great for flight simulators, waste of money for FPS.

huygir
