I realize that this article is a month old, but two weeks ago I too bought a MBP with a sunken power button. It bugged me but I knew it was harmless and probably not worth risking my warranty over.

3 days later I had taken it apart. I did not take it all the way apart, just enough to be able to pry it open and press behind the button to make it flush. I thought that would fix it, but alas after a few presses it would return to it's sunken state.

So, once again I noted that it's only aesthetic, not worth losing warranty over.

Today, 2 weeks later, I fully removed the upper case. I found that the power button is tacked into place with a large piece of adhesive material (the material actually covers the entire grill on both sides, with a hole for the light sensors) and that one side was refusing to stick. After a little super glue and a lot of masking tape (I didn't want any unfortunate accidents) my power button is now flush :-)

And I'm pretty sure the modification is undetectable (coz I'm worried about my warranty ;-) ).

pnit

I just love that a 3 line personal post can even spawn this many comments. I have a mac. It's not perfect. It's better than my PC that just broke after 3 years. This will break one day too. If it breaks within a year, wicked, I get it repaired for free so not even worth whining about. If it's after a year and below the 3 my PC lasted, I will be a bit pissed off.

As for the raised apple logo being a problem, I could hardly stop laughing. Go find a woman to carress and quit fondling the lid of your laptop!

Fluidity

Alright everyone. It's a power button. Get over it. Apple will have just as many flaws as everyone else. And to all the folks that use their macs running XP as their primary OS...???!! why'd you buy a mac?! You seriously could have purchased the same performance for half the price. I suppose this is why the iPhone will sell more than a single copy. But these are old arguments, and all well known. My curiosity is piqued by what Apple calls a "logic board." Honestly people, you ALL bought PCs with a fancy shell. Did Apple just get too high and mighty to call it a mainboard or motherboard? Does "logic board" make people feel like their product was worth the $300-1000 extra you paid for your machine with a bent power button? And for the technically-minded mac users: All of you know that all previous mac notebooks represent the pinnacle of unserviceability. Any machine that takes more than 10 outer screws and 20 minutes to completely disassemble doesn't make any sense unless you really want to pay someone $70+/hr to work on. At least they got the point with some of the newer ones, they're a slightly lesser pain in the ass to retrieve a hard disk from. But I digress. Power buttons will fail. I for one won't care much if the power switch on my Tablet PC is skewed by a few millimeters as long as it turns on. At least I'll be able to take it apart and fix it in an ordinate amount of time.

APOLAUF

I had a logic board problem with my MBP (purchased in July at an Apple Store), but it was misdiagnosed as faulty hard drives (of course), which were wiped and replaced twice by the Geniuses.

When it started to fail a third time, I worked with great phone support people at every level who replaced my machine with a brand new MBP core 2 duo which has been flawless. (They also allowed me to pick it up at the store and transfer data there.)

We were advised to use phone support and, ultimately, customer relations because they can make more independent decisions than the Geniuses and the store managers.

I could not be happier with the new MBP.

For the record, the MB I bought for my SO has been completely flawless.

musette

My MBP (CD2, from November) has the same problem as you and Jono. I haven't mashed the button, and it's lower on the left side.

I have AppleCare and would gladly take it in for repairs, but I work from home, and I can't be without it for a week or however long to replace the case. Right now it bothers me, but the button still functions and I'm actually really relieved to know it's not just me.

kostia

I went through two MacBooks that completely died on me before I gave up and asked for a refund. I'm back to using my PowerBook, which will suddenly die if I don't keep it plugged in. I am very disappointed with Apple's product quality lately. Perhaps they need to go back to making their computers more expensive.

Smivey

My 15 inch MBP also had the same track pad problem (raised on one side) and the '4' key didn't work so well.

I took it in to the Apple Store later that week and they said they would switch the keyboard out for a new one. Well, I got it back with a new keyboard, 3 new scratches, and the eject button was crooked (again, higher on one side).

Fortunately, someone broke into my house and stole my computer. Thank god for renters' insurance. I got a brand new machine (core 2 duo!) and haven't had any problems since.

theodd1

My MBP from April 06 is still going good. The only problems I've had have been with batteries, which Apple has replaced twice without question.

I'd love a new C2D MBP, but there's really nothing I need in the way of upgraded features, so I'm sticking with my current model.

I'm not an Apple basher myself, or at least in terms of MBP's. That's a pretty decent product, in my opinion. The iPod and iMac...well...that's a discussion for another time. The MBP is nice, but for specs/$ ratio you can't beat a Clevo, who makes laptops and distributes them. For those who don't know, all of the suspiciously identical Alienware, Voodoo, Monarch, Cyberpower, Hypersonic, etc. laptops are Clevos. With the price jacked up up to 2x.

Search Clevo or Sager and you'll find some decently priced places. Not the Sager website itself, though. There are cheaper variants. The 17", identically-spec'd Sager/Clevo beats out the MBP 17" and even 15.4" MBP, which is rather nice.
However, no one wants to reveal this "secret" for some reason. Not even the Giz. And especially not CNet.

Gerry_W

It's so ironic that every article that bashes Apple for it's quality only reinforces it's image as a company that delivers high quality products.

Why do Dell users not whine about their quality problems? Because, they do not expect quality from Dell.

Apple is now delivering over a million macs per quarter. Most manufacturers in Asia are only capable of achieving 3-sigma process quality. That means 2700 defects out of 1 million.

Amen, jrlittlejr. It's ridiculous to expect that a product priced at a 30-50% premium over other comparably spec'd hardware would be manufactured properly. MAYBE if it was three times the price of equivalent hardware you could expect to avoid having to exchange it five times to get a machine without manufacturing defects.

This exact thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago on my MBP. I had the first 15" 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo that came into the Apple Store after the release.

When I brought it in, they said that they've never seen anything like that before, and it wouldn't be covered under warranty because it's physical damage.

Now, I've taken care of my MBP like nothing else--my wife feels jealous at times--and I am the only person that uses it, so it shocked me to have this happen.

I told them that there is no way that I could have done it and asked them to actually prove that this wasn't a defect. The guy said that the only way something like this would happen is from excessive force, but I found it funny that he would know the (supposedly only) exact cause, yet, as mentioned earlier, they had never seen anything like it before.

He said that he'd try to get it repaired in-store on the down-low by saying he broke it while fixing something else, but only if they had a replacement part in stock... they did have one, but, uh, WHY would they have a replacement part if... yeah... THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE?

Fast-forward a couple of days with it in the shop: they call me up to tell me it's repaired and that it was covered by warranty.

I don't remember off the top of my head what the repair was recorded as, but I can pull out my receipt if you need me to.

hakujin06

Misapplosophy=Study of Apple hatred.

I don't get it. Tons of articles showing the WiiLove; no one complains that Giz has turned into a WiiWankFest. Tons of iPod articles. No complaints. A story on the Mac? Cue the monkeys bashing out bleatings on Giz' being a Macsturbation station.

It's a freakin' computer. It now runs Windows. Get over it for the love of gawd. Go hate Mac users somewhere else.

Disclaimer: I have one of the first MBPs released; it was my daily home PC primarily used with XP. Love the industrial design, hated the quirks and the weird assed form over function compromises. Decided I wanted something with more graphics HP, didn't want to dish out for a Dell XPS so ordered a whitebox Clevo M570u. Add CPU, RAM and HDD of choice and voila.

Wow. Build quality, speed, and for a 17", still reasonable size. Better yet, it doesn't fry your balls on contact and has faster graphics than most desktops. MBP is now on a shelf gathering dust.

Buford T. Justice

I just bought MBP 3 days ago, had a glossy screen on accident and returned it, that power button felt totally flush, but I exchanged for anti-glare and this is 30 hours old and i can feel the left side of the button is lower than the right side. I can feel the edge bezel from 4 oclock to 12 oclock where the rest is flush. I have not pressed this thing with anymore pressure then needed to say click a pen. Just for your info. Thanks for posting the warning/picture so i know to tread lightly. I hate reformatting machines after repairs/exchanges!

firetwuck says:

ummmm, maybe it's recessed for a reason?

Yes, they actually designed the power button to be crookedly recessed. Asymmetry = high design.

And those people complaining about screens being "warped" and latches "not closing"? They simply lack the ability to think outside of the box.

The screens are not "warped", they simply feature a unique contour. The latches aren't "broken", they're just designed to allow you to open your laptop with less effort.

Geeze, people. When will you stop doubting Apple's perfection? Any "defects" are actually unique design elements which differentiate your beautiful new MacBook from all others. Like those clothes you see at the store that have had a cheese grater taken to them. Failure to appreciate them as such simply proves that you have been brainwashed by the PC clone mentality.

It's weird how I've never seen anyone even come close to saying that Apple hardware is "flawless," and yet every time a problem is reported, a bunch of REALLY HILARIOUS people decide it's time to say "What's this? You mean Apple computers aren't perfect?"

Real original, guys.

dalasv

I just purchased a new 17" MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo and it has quite poor build quality. Unfortunately it was a custom build and I was therefore unable to send it back to Apple. I had two major problems. The first is just as the reviewer has described. In fact, if I did not press the power button just so, it would become stuck. I took the machine apart and looked at the power button. I found that there is a small lip on the bottom of the power button and a retaining ring that fits up inside it. My retaining ring had not been installed properly. I located a retaining ring tool and was able to seat it properly, and my power button was much improved. Unfortunately, the other problem is much more difficult. The bottom panel on the machine is severely warped, and I have to put about 1/16" worth of business cards underneath one corner in order to keep the machine from tottering around when I type on it. I contacted Apple customer service and they told me that they could do nothing since it was a custom build from their Web site (I ordered the 200 GB hard disk). The genius bar at my local Apple store has also refused to do anything about it. I am not a happy camper!

ny2a

Wow, what the heck is that? Is it? No! Wait, I think it is! It really looks like it is. Is that another chink in the apple armour? Can it be true? Everything apple is perfect, is it not? Oh no, the end is near. There must be a third party to blame!

jtsongas

You think that is bad, you should see my girlfriends MacBook...massive screen flicker, extreemly dirty case that won't come clean, and for some reason she can't import CD's into iTunes. I watched her take a brand new CD, unwrap it, put it in, digitize it at high quality 128 AAC file, and it would not take a couple of the tracks. And it acts up while using it a lot too. Apples own software on the laptop that came installed on it will randomly stop working in the middle of using it. ITs been a major pain. Its at AppleCare right now. I hope they fix it. I have not had good luck with apple stuff here of late.

givemeyourshoes

I have a MBP with the apple on the reverse of the screen sticking out a little. I can feel it as i glide myhand over it and it bothers me. But the one i had before this (my original one had more than frequent OS crashes) only one of the latches came down when closed and the screen was f-ed up so im happy with aslightly raised apple logo. I'm picky i know

Ryanraven

My MacBook Pro has the same defect. I didn't notice it at first, so I can only assume that it didn't come to me like this, but now the button sits a little bellow the main level of the speaker unit. It kinda makes me mad, but it isn't anything I am going to die over.
