From what I unerstand, they will be partnering with DELL to make this a reality. DELL has always been the underdog of cheap useful products, and Google has a great product. Doogle? Eh, I dont think so. Anyway, I wold personally enjoy a gPhone before an iPhone, since I have more use for Google software and email suite than I do for an 8GB iPod, though I wouldnt throw it out of bed.

LETS HEAR IT FOR GOOGLE AND DELL! Together at last.

StackyBotrus

Maybe it's just doe-eyed hope, but I'm thinking that Google's in a position to stick it to the carriers the way that Apple should have by not offering the phone completely unlocked for any carrier. With Apple in bed with Cingular it would be a great time to release a carrier-independent phone with content and apps available directly from Google. If it were well-designed, relatively affordable, and offered compelling features like snappy WiFi browsing and emailing in addition to 3G, it'd be a killer device.

But honestly, that's not likely to happen. In fact, I'd say the whole Google Phone idea is probably just rumor. I just don't see it happening. Maybe some nice widgets on a Samsung phone, but nothing more.

weatherman

I wonder if this is the reason why Verizon passed on the iPhone?

They though Google was going to have more to offer.

Realistically, from a marketing standpoint, it was probably a dumb idea, but I bet that Apple wanted a heavy chunk of the profits, and the use of iTunes on their phone, which would be two reasons Verizon would turn down deal A to find deal B which would end up being more profitable for them in the end.

MIKEAWESOME
