I would love to see them drop the storage and give me a chip for my remotes, my keys and all of the other crap I am always misplacing around the house. Then I can tag everything including the gnome in my garden. Add a reader in the bottom of my smoke detector and some slick web based Web 2.0 software that allows me to upload my home's layout and I can keep track of everything and anything with a tag and pin point exactly where it's at.

Especially that one neighbour who is always borrowing my garden gnome.

Seriously, the consumer market is huge and they talking industrial applications. Give me some RFID I can us day to day outside of a Gillette package.

By June, someone will have built a Media PC out of two of these, an old cell phone, and Ubuntu. Because, as we all know, all technology is worthless unless you can turn it into an ugly, portable Media PC that no one will ever want to use.

inseptiv

The problem of that, Rick, is the data transfer speed of RFID compared to USB. RFID tags are supposed to be read instantly, but going through 1GB of data will take days unless it's one of the 930MHz flavors.

Jesus Diaz

If I remember correctly, RFID isn't really all that good when it comes to data transfer rates, I suspect that will prevent it from being adopted as a consumer storage medium, but it could definitely be used for shipping containers like caveat said, or perhaps for places where multiple users access a single point, like at a call centre, instead of only using RFID to get through doors, it could also store your user information so that you were logged on when you sat near a terminal (and of course clicked a button to have the terminal read the card because randomly logging into terminals on the way to drop a deuce could get irritating).

jackfrost132

They may be using them just like normal USB flash drives, but without the pesky need of actually sticking the drive into the computer. I could see a lot of benefits of something like that for factories and hospitals.
Large storage capacity on a RFID chip will allow for local storage of events in real time.

Ie: The temperature of the tag at various time interval during transport.

You could also include handling instructions, construction diagrams and the like.

Strange to see that as the industry is approching the goal of a $.03 chip, someone's headed in the opposite direction.

the_caveat

Certain individuals could use these to store enough code to pass through multiple rfid access points. Without permission form the proper authority of course.

jackfrost132

They are marketing it to hospitals - what data is usually shared in hospital? Medial records? Naw... single employees? Naaw... prices for a triple bypass? Ask regis.

I cant figure it out either.

StackyBotrus

Pretty soon we won't be able to see a product on Gizmodo without it taking a stroll down trouser alley first!
