I saw something like this at Fry's a couple of days ago.  No solar panel, though.  Didn't look like it had provision for a battery, either, but it claimed that the display remained on even when the drive was unplugged.  </p>

This USB key features a bi-stable cholesteric LCD that gets updated when the key is plugged in and doesn't require any power to stay on ! In addition to showing remaining capacity, it also shows the 16-character drive label, which you can assign to be anything, including your name.</p>
