I saw something like this at Fry's a couple of days ago. No solar panel, though. Didn't look like it had provision for a battery, either, but it claimed that the display remained on even when the drive was unplugged.

So, why's this need a solar panel? Marketing, perchance?

This USB key features a bi-stable cholesteric LCD that gets updated when the key is plugged in and doesn't require any power to stay on ! In addition to showing remaining capacity, it also shows the 16-character drive label, which you can assign to be anything, including your name.

Though this key doesn't seem to be available for sale directly for the company, it most certainly has been released to stores -- I own this exact key with CompUSAs brand name.
