It's a typical kiddie lunch meal in Japan. The rice is actually omuraisu, which is ketchup (yes, and it's really good) rice usually served wrapped in an egg omlete. In this version it serves has side dish. Then we have pieces of tempura crab and tempura shimp. Next we have a "hambaagu" which like another commenter said it's ground beef mixed in with onion and other seasonings and sometimes with even ground pork. It's much better than any beef patty found in the West. The gravy is part of the meal, which is usually beef-stock and soy-sauce based. The putting is a regular Japanese flan pudding sold in plastic containers; you break the seal on the back and pop it right out. All very basic Japanese lunch items.

Yes I have eaten all of them many, many times and I even know how exactly they're all made since I was a religious viewer of the best cooking show ever made, "Dotchi no Cooking Show", in which dished battle for votes and the winning dish gets eaten by those who voted for it. Its' the ultimate in food porn and I'm very sad it was cancelled last year after over 10 years on Japanese TV.

Find a REAL Japanese restaurant and enjoy these dishes; they are all good.

It looks like a decaying turtle shell that's been Iwo Jima'ed, while the turtle is giving the 2 finger salute next to a fecal sample that has missed the fecal sample cup cos it's upside down.

I can't see anything there that even looks remotely like it's supposed to be a facsimile of something edible.

True. When i was in japan recently I was taken out to an upscale "Italian" restaurant in Yokohama, and was surprised to see hamburger patties with gravy as one of their signature dishes. It came in different portions with a variety of gravies.

It's actually a lot tastier, and it usually goes with rice and comes with gravy.

They call it "hamburg" and sometimes "steak" is appended to it. You can find it in many bento boxes, and some really expensive restaurants in Japan will focus exclusively on serving this hamburg.

It's also not really all beef. It's a mix of ground beef, ground pork, seasoning, diced onions and soya sauce. I watched a cooking show on it once couldn't stop drooling.

It's far superior to just a hamburger, and very very tasty. Salisbury steak doesn't even come close to it.
