@infmom: I've got a full-size iPod, so a lanyard really isn't an option. Relatively, it may not be all that heavy, but it'll raise a good welt after it bounces against my sternum a few hundred times. And that might trash the disk, so I'd need a full harness. I have no desire to look like I'm wearing a c.1961 hearing aid.

I'm 6-3, but have a long torso (gotta get XLL - not XXL, XLL shirts). The earbuds are standard - it's my second iPod (3G and Photo) and the lengths were identical. By the way, the AMEX replacement plan is a wonderful thing! My Photo's disk is dying, and I've got 3 more months to make a claim. I'm holding out for the 6G. The newest buds, without the little cylinders, may be longer. An extra inch or two would be great (where have I heard that?). I could put it in the brush pocket of my painters' pants.

I'd really like to get the Sennheiser MX500s. They're about 15 bucks and sound phenomenal. But they're even shorter.

@imajoebob: Just get one of those lightweight silicone skin cases that comes with a lanyard and hang the pod around your neck. Make sure the lanyard is the "shoelace" kind, though, because if you've got anything bigger than a nano the thin wire-like lanyards will dig a hole in the back of your neck in very short order.

You must have gotten some way short earbuds, though, because my son's 6'7" and doesn't have a cord-shortage problem.

I just noticed that it's using the old (old old) Apple ear buds. It's missing the detangler hoogie-thingie. I wonder, does it still work as well? Well being a relative term.

Sorry to get picky, but isn't this more of a rappeller (def: A person who descends down a nearly vertical face by using a doubled rope that is wrapped around the body and attached to some high point) than a spelunker (def: A person who explores caves). Not being a huge fan of caves I can't be sure that one does not contort themselves this way when spelunking, but . . .

Another solution in search of a problem. I'm a bit over 6 feet, and extra iPod cable is the least of my worries. I refuse to wear a stupid belt clip. They're the contemporary equivalent of the pocket protector, don't clip on your belt very well, and their functionality has an inverse relationship with attractiveness. My back pocket is about 1 inch too far away so if I bend or twist they pop out of my ears. My front pockets put a lot of pressure on the connector. My backpack works great, but I don't usually wear it when I'm walking the dog or working in the yard. This "Barrel Of Monkeys" factory second is no value to me.
