Here's some guys in France doing something similar. Maybe the same school as in the video Gizmodo posted, hard to say.

This idea goes back to the early 80's with Pierre Wellner and his original Digital Desk. Like a lot of amazing tech developments, much of the work was done at Xerox's research labs.

Then there's the MIT Sensetable, MIT Illuminating Clay, a whole bunch of digital desk concepts, and finally a buttload of tangible interface projects.
I think is a step in the right direction... MS have done a good job here, and I mean that sincerely.... but... I'm delighted to see all those pc people getting 'excited' about us mac users. Seems all those VIRUSES have got to your heads. Sorry, for the record I think pcs are fantastic. They never crash, they're great at running more than one program at a time, and I love the fact that you never have problems with MISSING DLL files etc. That beige look is great too. A nice noisy bulk of shit in the corner of your room..PLUG AND PRAY... hehe :-)

Enjoy installing your spyware, folks! Don't forget to drop me a line next time you get a little red cross and an unexpected error (maybe in the next day, back up!)...

Amazing, isn't it? pages and pages of "MS fanboy" and "Apple fanboy" rants and nobody asks the truly important questions concerning such technology... Am I comfortable putting my credit card on the table? I don't really see CAT5e running away from this thing... Is it wireless? Is it encrypted? Can I really trust my neighborhood bar to set up a table-by-table billing network and actually secure it... If all my devices are now going to be WiFi to support MS's new table toy, can I trust that my information can't be stolen from them at range? Every idealized future technology I've seen in its early stages has huge gaping security holes, and these tend to nail the casket shut on more technology than consumer demand... Consumers are, let's face it, cattle. If MS tells them they need a new OS or a $10,000 table, they will (eventually) buy it, but if it gets a bunch of peoples' identities stolen or data lost, then it gets shut down by something far more important than mere consumer demand... It gets shut down by its own lack of commercial capability.

That said, I think it's cool and I'd love to have one sitting in my living room, but I'll be paying cash at the bar, Bill, thanks anyway.

enmaku

I just rode in a NYC taxi with one of the newfangled Internet screens in them, and I have to say it was kind of cool. It shows a map of where you are (in real-time, obviously) updated every block or so, the running fare (including random fees like the night surcharge), and links to news and stocks (not real-time, must be on a download delayed Anyway, kind of cool but really needs free internet to make it worthwhile.
Anyway, I was just thinking that this would be great for bars in NYC. You wouldn't need the whole bar, just a little strip that you can put your card on for a sec and then pull it away. The bartender could then put your charges into their computer and show a running tally on the screen/strip... or maybe just the number of drinks or something? Seems handy to me, especially considering how rarely I remember to take my card from the bar when I start a tab.

It is always sad to see people do this. Everone must justify their decision of owning either PC or Mac by sticking up for everything on "Their side" and bashing everything on the other side.

My side is better because of...

The iPhone was interesting, I will not buy one, but it had some interesting things to it.

The Surface is interesting, not buying one of these either, but I still find it having potential for the future.

Enough making yourself feel better because of your past gadget purchases and just accept that your enemies are who you make them and finding what works on both sides can only benefit everyone.

Hand_O_Death

Most of the commenters here who are flaying the dead horse of "innovation" or "[brand x] was first" are entirely missing the point: This is now an actual product (exclusive to MS partners right now) which has a chance of being in your living room in the near future and at a reasonable cost.

Yes, there are many others working on this technology right now, but they haven't got anything out the door yet except demo video on YouTube. Big deal!

If you want to see another yet another company's "version" of what Microsoft has announced, then maybe you should look at this one from Northrop Grumman:

http://www.ms.northropgrumman.com/touchtable/

On the right-hand side of that page you will find a fact sheet and a video of it in action.

To belabor the point -- who do you think will sell this technology to you at a reasonable cost right now ? I seriously doubt that anyone would give the answer as being Northrop Grumman. If so, then you're living on planet Bizarro.

The tech in the Surface computer is NOT the same as the touch technology in the iPhone. The underlying software may treat multi-touch input in the same way, but the way it gets there in the first place is different.

Personally, I don't care who gets this stuff out to the consumer first -- as long as it works.

Oh, and the Vista computer used in the Surface computer video in which everyone is complaining about "lag" is running a P4 -- not a multi-core CPU. This is what is commonly called a "non-issue" -- which almost always is brought up by the haters in a given camp when the other side flummoxes them with something good.

Cripe sake -- grow up already!

If this thing was under $5000, then it would be in my living room ASAP.

uraphake

This technology has been around for 25 years. I assume it's predicated on Frustrated Total Internal Reflection (FTIR). This tracks multiple points and gestures simultaneously whereas most touch screens only track one point at a time and zero gestures. MS isn't the stud nor is Jeff Han - though they've both done a lot to push multi touch to the next step. For those that think it's a touch screen, you're missing the point - please see the MERL diamond touch solution. I agree with most of you - MS may commercialize it, but they're going to create apps that put up barriers to entry into our living room.

viable

I have to admit, I am usually a Microsoft hater but this is pretty sweet. This is potentially the first device/product that microsoft has ever produced that has made me excited for the next ten years. The number of features packed into this one display is impressive and as the camera/interface develops and progresses over the next few years I think that we will see a much better consumer product.

koryglenn

Interesting produt.. when i first saw a shot of it on tv, I thought they were shoving tiles around on a table and the tiles could be stretched or resized. I see now that they have 5 cameras following your movements.

My question boils down to, how accurate will this thing be? Can someone do fine detail cad work on a graphic app down to the pixel level? Would there be a stylus involved?

Also, how do you type letters, is there a virtual keyboard? To be "revolutionary" I would expect it to be completely capable of speech recognition..
And people people said that restaurants or bars wouldn't have TVs. I've seen similar, albeit messy and primitive touchscreen things for tasks like ordering tickets or car rentals. Pretty much everyone has used them. This is just a step up. Maybe 5 steps.

Roflgoat

As for mac fanboys, i love how they seem to think that Apple has its consumers best interest at heart. "Thats why apple decided to use this tech in the iPhone first, so consumers could experience it now". Are you kidding me? How deluded are you guys? Not only did Apple not develop the iPhone touch technology first, (just patented it), the only thing Apple and MS and other corporations want you to experience is money leaving your wallet. Nuff said.

asTer0id

Seeing more videos of this makes me more hopeful. It's clear Microsoft really wants this to work out. At first I was a little angry that this was just another "demo" that wouldn't make it anywhere, but this is a media tour de force, and a retail b2b product for the end of the year (if that happens).

Not being an XBox user, I only remember products like the Micrsoft Mouse and the Microsoft Natural Keyboard as being great consumer products. I'm not a fan of the Zune, because its not very innovative.

This stuff is pretty good, but I'm concerned its not practical. We'll see I guess. Looking at the credit card demo with tipping and such was actually the most USEFUL thing I saw (although I'm leery about whether it will work). It'd be nice if some restaurant had more than "1" of these... but at $10,000 a pop... I don't see that happening.

I'm dissappointed with Palm. I want more consumer, decently priced, multi-touch stuff. Where is it?

Cleverboy

This will never work. I'm a Microsoft fanboy, and pretty much an Apple hater (I got a zune, though that doesn't mean too much)but this will never work through. This will never be in restaurants (except maybe one rare good one) and will have no success at all. All that microsoft did this time was make a cool toy. They do this for 10 years while they should be making something cool like a good operating system that actually works with their products. The only good thing I see in this table is the zune integration (did you see how he put it down, and the wifi in the zune connected them?) Really cool. Otherwise, we have another really expensive piece of crapware.

bana

Nice. Despite my being a Mac fanboy, I'm going to try to be objective.

The interface is nice, no question. Multi-touch screen is nothing new though, we all know that. The organic interface reminds me of BumpTop. If you took BumpTop and made several major upgrades to it and ran it on a multi-touch screen, you'd just about have MS Surface.

The tech that MS is using isn't anything terribly revolutionary but they have blended it all well and are bringing it to market before anyone else.

Now the down side. It has built in wi-fi and pulls the information out of anything that you set on top of it... Doesn't this frighten anyone else?

You're finishing up dinner with the family at some fairly pricey restaurant in a resort town and you set you credit card on the table. How long do you think it will take someone to figure out how to crack the table and use that built-in wi-fi to steal your credit card information, music off of your kid's zune and "those" pictures that you and your wife took while the kids were downstairs in the hotel pool?

OK, so maybe I'm not being terribly objective. I am trying to be a cautious consumer though.

bgplpshep

It's really exciting that a company like Microsoft is investing time and effort into a product like this. Although Apple may or may have not "done this first" (actually, it was probably somewhere in academia that this first popped up), this sort of technology will progress further with more major companies on board in it's development. The "discussion," if you will, between technology developers through their presentation of products is what is going to make this product available for consumers sooner, and regardless of who gets credit, it's better for every one when thing like this are available to the masses.

Also, I've seen this (http://infoviz.pnl.gov/hces/) in action before, and although it's different in the sense it doesn't require physical contact, it would be cool if this sort of technology was created to overlap and be even more like Minority Report.

EventHorizon

hope i am not rehashing earlier posts... too much... didn't have time to read all of them...
but first, i really think this is a nice design that covers a lot of what i *really* do with a computer. i like that it interacts with me in a predictable way (i.e. dragging photos around, resizing them, etc.) and also interacts with objects in its environment (i.e. wifi camera, credit cards, etc.). i do hope this is the direction computers are moving and i can really envision all kinds of ways to use it. i think the concept can be compared to making the leap from using a command line interface to using a graphical interface. i would call it an "interactive interface".

craighyatt

I was wondering the same thing. If I dropped my pants and boxers, sat my bare ass cheeks on it, what would happen?

I think someone should finance a "Battle of the Multi-Touch Gooeys" contest and buy me an iPhone, and one of these, and let me give them both my double-bare ass-cheeks test. Whichever one corretcly idenitifies that it is my bare ass cheeks touching AND gives an accurate count of any dingle-berries wins my eternal allegiance.

hypereric

The multi-touch interface was not invented at Apple. It was as far as I know first shown many, many years ago at NYU. The demo of the MSFT table is almost verbatim the multi-touch concept video of many, many years ago. On this one, Apple made it to the patent office faster than anyone else. But they didn't invent it 'Nuff said. 10k for a table? Not a chance.

bryanmccormick

But the real kicker will be that MS will make it so it only works with MS products like the Zune, and in doing so will give a big advantage to all the copycats lining up to make a cheaper version that works with more than just the Zune and camera companies that partner exclusively with MS.

heath

It's nice to see another elegant bit of the future finally arrive. It's no surprise that Bill Buxton is currently at Microsoft as a principal researcher to those who know his work and have seen this and the iPhone. For those of you with a memory as short as digg's this sort of idea has been in the works since the early eighties. (Longer than most of you I'd guess...)

"History"

MS in their eternal and unswerving arrogance, on their site, give a time-line that only goes back to 2001, ignoring the past 25 years of work by others in this area.

(I doubt Stevey J. will be sharing any credit either in his next keynote either...)

Buxton has a well rounded history of Multitouch on his site:

It seems you are all way too smart for your own good. None of you knows what's going on here, because none of you are the target market of this device.

In the commercial market, Microsoft gets to sell Surface as a WOW device, which despite the individual musings for or against, all seem to agree that Surface is. Similarly to early adopters, Surface will rise and fall in popularity and promise with each company's interpretation of usage.

But in a residential market, this bad boy is made for the 90% of citizens that eschew technology for whatever reason; the people that don't know, don't care or both about computers, but still want some or all of the conveniences that computers can provide. The very same relatives that can burn up a video poker machine but shudder at the thought of burning a CD.

A tactile interface coupled with seamless it-just-works-ness IS the wave of the future. And really, if it just works, who freakin' cares if it's a tracking a microsecond behind my touches?

And for the record, when did Microsoft try to pawn this off as their own idea? And I don't remember hearing the words innovative, exclusive, patent, mine, or any other derogatory notion either.

mwhyde

"Where were the crowd-control cops like aec007 and yourself when the naysayers were busy tearing down the iPhone's multi-gestural capabilities because it had already been demonstrated in the Jeff Han video?"

I think I was on vacation that day.

I like the iPhone well enough, but it's a niche product that's entering an already saturated market. Sure it's sexy and sleek, but it's just not going to appeal to the great majority of cell users who primarily just want to be able to make calls. I think it will sell fairly well, but I doubt it will reach even 1/10th of the iPod numbers.

You see what I did there? I critiqued a gadget based upon it's market potential, not specifically because it came from god or satan as they are variously defined in the tech world. I may be completely wrong about my predictions, but so what? I'm not emotionally invested in it, so if I'm wrong then my world won't fall apart.

So someone demonstrated multi-gestural capabilities before the iPhone? Who cares? Is it in a product that I can buy and use? If someone is stealing another's technology, then that's an issue for the courts. There are plenty of lawyers out there who will be willing to take the case. Ultimately, if there's no verdict then it never happened.

Atrahasis

Anyone else thinking this might be the product to finally bring the PC into the living room as the COFFEE TABLE?

Besides all the cool touch screen crap, it could do all the media PC stuff too for movies, music etc. Put a shelf under it to recharge cellphones, mp3players etc and you'll simplify my life at least.

I can definitely see folks wiring their whole house to it, lights, alarm, etc. this will be in high end homes very soon I'm sure. For all those folks who dropped $10K on the plasmas originally. Plus there seem to be more of them these days.

I'm happy to see a new UI benchmark available for broad acceptance - this will help HCI evolve futher. Running on Vista? I'm guessing Jeff Han's isn't running on windows. So is Mr. Gates offering a software system or a hardware system? Most people can agree that MS software will limit the seemingly endless possabilities of multi-touch. Truly amazing.

Where were the crowd-control cops like aec007 and yourself when the naysayers were busy tearing down the iPhone's multi-gestural capabilities because it had already been demonstrated in the Jeff Han video?

Where were you when Apple was "stealing" the technology and it wasn't innovative because it had already been done before?

Now that Micro$oft has done it, it's "Who cares who came up with it, the bottom line is who can bring it to market and make some money off of it?"

Incredible. It really is.

When Apple brings more multi-touch products to mainstream consumers well before 3-5 years from now, I hope to see aec007 in the street directing traffic. Need to borrow my whistle?

Marty_MacFly

I think this is a sign of things to come :: Big companies with deep pockets taking existing technology and marketing it as their own. They have the money and marketing power the originators didn't-- and they'll take all the glory (yes, we geeks know M$ didn't come up with the idea, but mainstream doesn't). The trend has been ramping up for some time, and now I think it's in full force.

Here's to hoping Apple 1-ups Microsoft again, and multi-touch is Leopard's big secret. Microsoft targets enterprise, Apple gets it to the mainstream. They did say the iPhone runs OS X...

johnny5k

Jeff Han's version seemed to run a lot faster than this. Arguably, he didn't show anything like the things Bill did with the camera, but it shouldn't be that hard to implement (well, depending on hardware).

It looks like a powerful piece of hardware, but unless they can make it catch up to user input better, it's almost unusable.

Here is a link to the Jeff Han demonstration at TED Talks. You will find that some of the things said by Jeff Han and Bill Gates are awfully similar as well:

I am not a huge MS, but I think people out there have to appreciate the engineering it takes to go from one of the technology demos is not insignificant. I think there are a lot of good uses for this, but I would really like to see more of these concepts in consumer applications. I think it solves a lot of the problems that have been preventing computers from reaching the living room, but there are a lot of issues where it is still going to struggle, which is probably the reason didn't wait a couple more years to let the tech prices trickle down to consumer level.

I wouldn't call this earth-shattering, but the potential is there. Hopefully, they don't have many of the Longhorn people on it.

Mokers

and has specific details on the work that he, and others, have been doing in developing this new UI. This is another instance of microsoft copying and claiming innovation. It didn't happen. Microsoft has never done anything but snap up the technologies of others and claim it as their own innovation. Even the original core for the original IBM DOS from microsoft was a rework of the 16bit version of CP/M developed by Seattle Micro.

@JeffPom :
This is not the same technology as the iPhone, the Microsoft surface is based on retro projection and infrared cameras. The iPhone is probably based on capacitive/resistive technologies and will probably be able to handle only 2 points of contact at the same time. Also, to Bjarnia, check out www.jazzmutant.com It's a commercial multitouch display for music.

Flipo

I wonder if this table will finally replace the wigi board used by aircraft carrier flight deck commanders to organize the top deck. I saw in a Discovery Channel program Carriers a few years back that they've tried everything to modernize that but the old system still beats anything new. Haters/Apple-fanboys keep in mind that this is v1.0 (maybe even v0.9) and this can only improve. I don't see a big use for this at home until it's in a better form factor. I think being able to just set your devices down and have them sync is really neat though. This could become a great media center PC, once my have affordable 3rd or 4th gen hardware.

RobotVampire

Does someone really HAVE to be "first" with something like this? Technology has always been built on the backs of others, this is no different. You all are so quick to say OMG SIMPSONS DID IT for no real good reason. Are we supposed to be impressed by your observation? Impressed that you called someone on supposedly ripping off someone else? How about you just marvel at the fact that something like this is going to be available in our lifetime and leave it at that.

"Of course if it was Apple's, then it would be the best thing since sliced bread."

No, if it was Apple's, all the M$ fanboys would be out in droves complaining how this was nothing more than a rich man's playtoy, an overpriced proof-of-concept device for all the so-called Mac people whose pockets bulge with expendable cash.

This is a concept car, not in a sense that it can't be purchased but much of its functionality and overall appeal will be dumbed down before it reaches the masses. That's why Apple started with multi-touch in its simplest form, so EVERYONE can experience it NOW instead of 3-5 years down the road!

Only they wrapped it in a much more accessible product, applying it to one our most heavily used tools in the cell phone. Yet all you could hear from the haters is

"What, no keyboard? LAME!"

"Yuck, all those fingerprints & smudges. LAME!"

"What if I break the screen? LAME!"

Microsoft says the keyboard is dead 5 months after Steve Jobs made the same proclamation and NOW it's a revolution? Where were you people talking about the vast possibilities of multi-touch a few months ago?

Sweet, but I wonder if you watching poor on you table, I just think it adds to the creepiness if your rubbing your table at the same time to start a new movie. Nah to weird. But as a normal application based option I think that's the coolest idea Microsoft has come up with in a long time. I like the idea of how you split up your bill and just throw down your credit card, boom it's done, that's wicked. OVer all, interesting idea, I'd like to see how they would format the device for more of a home application. -_Cheers

DJRome

Leading the way to what? None of this is revolutionary - all of it has been done before (and not by Apple, btw). Exactly what need is this filling? It's a solution without a problem.

Admittedly, this looks very, very cool. But my comment above stands. Maybe a different suite of applications to run on it would change my mind. Hunching over a table just doesn't seem like a lot of fun.

Dancing Milkcarton
