You may also find that a lot of smokers are less likely to get sick outside of the smokers cough, the tar from cigarettes coats the sensitive tissue's in the sinus and throat preventing the virus from penetration.

Three: second hand smoke killing people is a farce, there are far worse things floating around in the normal air you breathe on a daily basis then cigarette smoke could hold a candle to, look around I'm sure there is a town near you where people are dropping like flies from cancers of all types.
There are so many companies out there producing more toxins then you could ever imagine. So the next time you want to make a lame ass comment about smokers, do some home work and learn some facts.

If you don't like smoke, don't go where people smoke. If you think people shouldn't smoke, fine. Just remember that there are a lot of people that people should keep their mouth shut about things that don't concern them.

Well...most of the FOODS people abuse smell pretty good even to the people who aren't eating it. Most TOBACCO smoke smells pretty BAD to people who don't smoke (I myself am one notable exception...I hate the habit of tobacco smoking, have never smoked myself, and yet I enjoy the smell to no end...). And in addition to smelling good, Pizza, French Fries, and lemon marangue(sp?) pie have been conclusively proven to NOT hurt anyone unless they eat them. Yet, most studies show and many (though not all) people acknowledge that second hand smoke can damage peoples health.

So basically you don't see the same reaction because food abuse is neither as irritating or as likely to cause collateral damage as tobacco smoke is (to most people anyway...there are always exceptions).

Though you do have a point, heart disease and death are heart disease and death whether the pack a day that did it to you came with menthol OR ketchup...

I could say the same thing about drinking, buying non-organic food and riding bikes. Most aspects of life come with inherent dangers.

Obesity will soon overtake smoking as the biggest health problem in the United States if it hasn't already. I don't see the same fervour from anti-smoking advocates towards bad food.

Keith Richards has famously stated that quitting heroin is easier. Most studies have shown that that's not far from true. So why do we reserve our sympathies for heroin addicts who want to quit and find it difficult? Why do governments make much more money from tobacco tax revenues than they put into health care and prevention? And why do we encourage our kids to grow up to be firemen? I feel largely the same about smokers though...sans vitriol of course. If people like that particular form of slow suicide (and let's be honest it's just one of many...) that's their right...but for gods sake...think of the children...

That's a BIG if. I'm not going to lump all smokers together, as in all stereotypes, there are the exceptions, but I can't tell you how often I see some asshole puffing away in a car full of kids (usually yapping on a cell phone at the same time). If you smoke responsibly, more power to you, it's your life, but when jerkoffs risk the lives of others, especially children, it's just criminal.

I haven't had a ciggie in 6 years, but I used to smoke *a lot*, and as a responsible smoker I made damn sure that the second hand smog wasn't encroaching non-smokers (unless they walked into the smokers area - God, the amount of people that will *sit down* in a designated smoking area, next to someone puffing on a cigarette and then bitch and moan about the smoke would make my head twirl!). If some asshole blows smoke in your face in a non-smoking area, blame him/her, and not the smoking populace in general.

Smoking is the socially acceptable vice to pounce on - by disparaging it in such a public manner you really risk making yourself a hypocrite. Such pundits, I am sure, have equally outrageous vices of some form or function that matches smoking, but seem to think they are justified in brow-beating this particular vice. Then again, maybe I'm wrong, maybe these people don't have any vices to speak of. God, how boring of a person would that be?

Or you could just smoke the pipe tobacco in a pipe. :-)

Pipe smoking is far more relaxing, although there's a bit more hardware and effort involved -- tampers and pipe cleaners, etc. A bit more of a ritual.

As you suggest, the pipe tobacco will go out on its own if you don't keep sipping at the pipe. Which is why you spend half the time relighting the pipe. But the added maintenance also probably makes it far less likely to fall asleep while smoking one....

Cigarettes supposedly have some kind of additive that causes them to continue to burn even when you aren't smoking them. I don't know if that's true, but I guess they would sell more cigarettes that way :-)

Many people find the smell of pipe smoke to be pleasant. The smell does not linger like cigarettes. You can smell cigarette smoke in your clothes the next day, but not so with pipe smoke.

Alas, you don't see many people smoking pipes these days. It is too refined, perhaps, for our era of instant gratification. It is, to paraphase Obi-Wan, "an elegant weapon... for a more civilized age...."

yeah cigs in CA are like this now. they're terrible. if yer driving, you can't tell if it went out or the cherry dropped, and since they seem to drop the cherry more now, it's a total pain in the ass.

thats why smart smokers roll their own. and yes, my cigs have filters, and i roll a pack in under 5 minutes. costs about 45 cents a pack. the only idiot smokers are those still paying retail pack prices.

still, my mother is trying some new drug to help her quit. im gonna see how it goes.

Most of the methods currently available to help with smoking cessation have the same flaws. They either slowly taper you off or don't take care of the whole problem. The taper off method is just stupid. Almost no one quits by "cutting back" the number of smokes they have a day. The things that don't taper you off (like the prescription drugs) don't take care of the oral fixation that is a huge part of the habit.

I've taken the needed steps to quit again, but this time I think it will work. My friend and I put up some pretty dire consequences for failing. If you have a smoke, you owe the other person $100. Not $100 one time, $100 for each smoke. Makes a pack worth $2000 and the bet goes on forever. It's an honor system thing, but we're honest people.

Couldn't the same be said about alcohol though? My grandad smoked but (thankfully) quit after 30 years of doing so and he is still alive and, as far as anyone knows cancer free. I think he is 84 now. My aunt liked to drink. She is dead now. She died at 52 from cirrhosis of the liver. She knew it could happen.

An interesting side note to this....one of the big tobacco companies owns the patent on a particular mechanism of self-extinquishing (I forget if it is RJ Reynolds or Philip Morris), so they don't put up much of a fight against these laws. The other company tends to lobby against it. Funny how business and politics mix.
