I plug my iPhone into my car radio a lot. It would be very helpful if when the screen went to sleep in iPod mode I still had basic iPod functionality, like tapping the right side of the screen to skip to the next track, or tapping the left side of the screen to restart the present track. It's a pain to have to push the Home button, slide to unlock, and then fiddle with controls, all while driving.

tonypsx

I would like to give a big +1 for Quicken. I have an old school Palm Pilot that I carry around, and the number one thing that I use it for is to track my spending, on the spot, using Pocket Quicken.

Hell, I wouldn't even mind if someone would write a better application than Quicken, with iPhone support. Quicken kind of smells.

steveluscher

I don't think many of the named apps would be a 'killer app'. The first thing that comes to mind is a full-blown GPS app. Games on the iPhone will not be the killer app, just take a look at Nokia's n-gage platform which failed miserably. Sure, phone-games generate a lot of revenue for some companies, but you're hardly gonna buy a $500|600/700eur cellphone to play games. It's not targetted at the average teenager... It is - in the first place - targetted as a Nokia communicator/Blackberry/Sony Ericsson P9xx audience, which has the money to spend up to $1000 on a 'portable communication center'.

I really can't believe some things ppl think up here. Firefox on it? No tx - I don't want bloatware on my cellphone, and it already has a browser, that should be sufficient. Openoffice? Why the hell do you need that on a cellphone? Ppl who need that have laptops to do office stuff. Very basic/limited viewing capabilities and spreadsheet editing - absolutely, but a complete office suite? Useless.

I had a Sony Ericsson P910i for many of the things ppl talk about here, and I did not use it for a lot of the things ppl think of. Why? Not because it wasn't easy to do, but simply because you don't need to. Sure I tried games, office suits, ... which did what they had to do, and weren't bad at all, but I simply did not use any of them.

Basicly the iPhone is such a phone 'done right'. Things I used my p910 for in order of importance:
- Make phone calls/send text messages
- GPS
- Calendar functionality/Todo list
- Reading mail (rarely sent one with it)
- Tracking of expenses
- Some limited surfing (though a bit slowish using gprs)
- Taking pictures (would have been higher on the list if the camera was as good as the one in my K750i)

I personally think that (except for GPS stuff) - the iPhone already is a killer app if it does as it promises, which is: hassle-free syncing of calendar/mail/contacts with PC and mac. Ever tried the nokia or sony-ericsson suites? Or even syncing a windows-mobile PDA with a windows? This is way too complicated at this moment. From what I've seen on the mac, I have every reason to believe that they'll do it right.

One thing that I like about the new Sony-Ericsson P990 is the ability to take a picture from a business-card, apply OCR/image recognition and add it to your contacts. I would love to see these kind of things extended. Like e.g. taking a picture of a restaurant bill straight into a spreadsheet or my expenses application. They may sound like nice-to-haves but if you make it accessible and almost automatic, these are the kind of things that would make my life easier.
A different spin on Microsoft Exchange compatibility... In my opinion, at minimum, the iPhone needs a way to get to Outlook webmail.

A lot of people make a big deal about Exchange synchronization - but plenty of us out there using Blackberries don't have the luxury of a BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) account. That includes a lot of us in large enterprises who don't rank high enough on the totem pole to get BES accounts.

The Blackberry Internet Service provides access to Outlook Webmail and pushes your email to your BB device, and syncing with your desktop/laptop with a USB cable provides Outlook contacts/calendar/notes/task syncing. In most situations, that is plenty good enough.

Sure, Exchange Server supports POP3/IMAP, but when was the last time IT security for a large enterprise made a firewall exception so your latest gadget could get through and get email?

I really hope I'm missing the blatantly obvious, and that the iPhone will support Outlook webmail. But, I suppose there's always the standard AT&T 30-day return policy :-)

I'd like to see Starcraft 2 for iPhone; it's a big game, while not being too graphically intense, and the ability to play while mobile would let people take the game with them, instead of having it stuck on a desktop or console.

But the real potential for Starcraft 2 is in South Korea with a 3G iPhone. The game is huge over there; South Korea accounted for over 40% of total unit sales of Starcraft 2, and the country has a large number of 3G cell users, making the game on the iPhone a killer app for Korea, and greatly increasing the appeal of the phone as a mobile gaming device.

One other possibility - perhaps there's no SDK necessary because the iPhone SDK is actually the OS X SDK and you'll be able to code for the iPhone with just a few new UI APIs? The only other difference would be performance considerations, which don't require an API so much as they require advice and best practices from Apple.

gfair

The only feature on this device that is skeptical to me right now is the transition that takes place when you select or return home. I've noticed in a couple videos that there is a brief shudder in the transition. This points to my next point, what is the processing power of this device? If it is having a hard time loading and unloading screens, then what is it going to do when i'm listening to music, and surfing the web? Externally made apps might be limited by the iPhone's ability to process. Anyways, if I was able to have any app I wanted, I would go strait for Reason 3. The program would work so well in wide screen mode with all the mixer panels and knobs for creating the perfect synth.

BajaBob

I can't believe that no one else wants home theater remote software built in. I set down to watch TV and I have in front of me remotes for the TV, Stereo Receiver, DVD player, Cable DVR, an RF remote for the ceiling fan and a Lutron remote to dim the lights. Next to those remotes are my cell phone and my home phone. I was looking at that mess a few days ago hoping that I could roll them all into one unit with the iPhone. I have tried several "One remote to rule them all" systems including those from Logitech/Harmony and have found them all severely lacking. An iPhone with touch screen remote would be a killer app.

mbritt

Pretty much a GPS would do wonders to the iPhone, I bet they will include the new street view and traffic in Google Maps. Definately IM (and Apple buys out Adium and replaces iChat for the Leapord release IMO), I bet just having widgets that have access to limited system resources is the best way to get 3rd party apps. If there's not going to be a built in IM client then someone is going to figure out a way to get it to run through a widget.

mechanisma22

How about an app that integrates a to do list with google maps, so I can have my iPhone remind me to do something when I am within x feet of a certain place (of course this would require gps or some kind of positioning information).

It's simple but it would save me a lot of hassle.
Also some simple app to track cash and charge expenses on the go, but maybe that's already part of the current basic set of apps.

Doing banking on the phone would be awesome and that is already possible since Safari is included. However, it would be great if Apple promoted widget design with banking institutions like Citibank et al, as well as favorite sites like eBay, Amazon, etc., so as to support the equivalent of mobile versions of their essential Web site functions. That way, the user experience would be optimized and you would not have to scroll and zoom around much.

Also, more miniversions of Apple desktop apps like Keynote and Pages (the former probably a given since Steve uses it).

And a universal remote control function, also for FrontRow.

Oh, and MAME support with a Bluetooth joystick or trackball.

jmdecombe

...And for all the people that want Outlook/Excel/Word/PowerPoint: go get a WM6 iPhone clone from the myriad that will flood in from HTC and Samsung. The functionality will be there. If you have to have an iPhone in spite of plentiful alternatives, you are and forever will be Steve Jobs' tool! At that point, it's a fashion statement-not a phone, take what you get.

Games that take advantage of the touch screen. Maybe games that are based on trackball control, for instance. Old school examples would include Gimme A Break, Crystal Castles, Marble Madness, etc. Problem would be that finger would have to be offset somewhere off the game display to avoid covering ongoing stuff. A bit like Microsoft's recent innovation in that regard.

jmdecombe

Cisco VPN Client. I know, it's boring, but there are a lot of business people who won't be able to read their corporate email without a VPN tunnel into the company servers, and it seems as though a lot of these companies use the Cisco VPN Client. (Since Apple and Cisco supposedly have an agreement to co-develop software for the iPhone, maybe this is a real possibility?) Also, a good ssh tunnel implementation would help a lot of people who use that.
Two things.

1. A wireless remote transport control for Logic or Garageband. My mac and the iPhone have wifi, so let me hit record, play, etc from across the room where I'm playing guitar. Plus, it plays into the iLife thing, which would make marketing happy.

2. An RPN scientific calculator. Everybody knows real gangstas use HP 48 series calculators, but even modern HP calcs use the same slow ass processors they did in 1992. Add full color, backlit graphs ala grapher, and every Physics nerd will be dying to get their hands on one.

hmccabe

A GTD (David Allen's "Getting Things Done") tool, like OmniFocus.

Given the price, I'd expect that a large number of the initial iPhone buyers will be GTD zealots, for which a "basic" to-do app barely suffices. Consequently I'm sincerely hoping that The Omni Group finds a way to offer their forthcoming uber-GTD workhorse, OmniFocus, for the iPhone.

GTD contexts are, by their nature, inherently mobile, and thus exactly the sort of thing you want 24/7 access to in a small, mobile device. Add to that OmniFocus' support for multiple contexts as well as sequential and parallel tasks, and you've got an abundantly flexible - yet elegant - task management environment. Wrap it up nicely in an iPhone UI, and you've got my idea of GTD Nirvana. And my number one most wanted iPhone app.

Not only for campus use, but its huge for the corporate world. It's often a necessary step to get to an Exchange account..even if it only then allows Outlook Web Access.

It needs 3 things for me to really sell it.
1) VPN. Gotta have it, can't get into the work network without it.
2) SSH. While painful, what I really wanna do is check on servers when I'm paged without lugging out the laptop.
3) RDC. See 2, except in a Windows world.

Personally if I just get decent text-messages (for server alerts) and a unified Voice/Email/Message Inbox it's enough of a sell, but the extra three things? That's make it replace my MacBook for 90% of my remote needs.

Genady

Men, I've been reading this site for ages and have been tempted to coment on so many occacions but this is sooooo it, I cannot miss the chance of naming my BIG 5. Maybe Apple will hear us, who knows, it's free to try, plus would give up a kidney just like that for an iPhone. So here it is my big 5 list

#1 SKYPE- gimme an iPhone, an unlimited data plan, and SKYPE and I could as well be in heaven!

#2 iWork/MS Office, whichever one they decide: Apple Pages/MS Word, Apple Keynote/MS PowerPoint, Apple Tables/MS Excel. I'd rather get the Apple versions but compatibility? i dunno

#3 Adobe Acrobat PDF reader/writer?

#4 Adobe Micromedia FLASH player for online video watching.

#5 a Voice recording program so I can record lectures of my professors at the college.

whatIF

* Parallels Mobile with Windows Vista support
* Windows Mobile Emulator so I can run StyleTap Palm OS Emulator
* WAP Browser (hehe)

but seriously...

* LogMeIn / CoRD / Apple Remote Desktop / VNC (with pinch-zoom support)
* Multiplayer Texas Hold'em Poker
* Skype
* some sort of YouTube uploader
* Karaoke (MP3+CDG) Player
* PayPal Widget (send and receive money in a flash)
* PayPal Virtual Debit Card
* Barcode scanner and supported apps (think Delicious Library)
* Adium
* BLACKBERRY CONNECT FOR IPHONE
* Voice Dial

Hardware add-ons:
* slim memory card attachment at the 30-pin port
* Griffin iKaraoke (hope it works, saw this in the Apple store and looks fun)
* GPS attachment or Bluetooth GPS support to turn iPhone into a navigation device (think CoPilot for Pocket PC)
* slim battery extender (why Steve couldn't sacrifice 1 extra mm for more battery power is beyond me)

All of the software below is already available to my current phone - a pocketpc phone. The iPhone is sexy and seems easier to use - but once you're used to the software below, why switch to a lesser phone unless you just use it as a phone. The iphone has so much potential - why not include:

1. Sync software for Outlook contacts, calendar, tasks, emails. Can't live without this, no discussion - just do it, and not just for the Mac.
2. Skype. Doesn't work well on my current PocketPC, wish it will on the iphone - free calls baby, the way it was meant to be.
3. Tomtom or equivalent. Google maps is nice, for desktops, not actual driving. I have Tomtom on my pocketpc and been using it for years.
4. A push email client (if it isn't already included with the iphone)
5. Java so I can run all those java games.

6. VLC - view ANY movie
7. MSN (or trillian or whatever MSN compatible client)
8. An Avantgo type alternative - reading offline website feeds is real nice when no connection is available.
9. Ooh and a PDF/eBook reader for those long commutes.
10. Not really software, but I'd love to hook it up to USB mass storage devices and card readers (would rather not lug that laptop on vacation for those huge digital pictures.)
I agree with some posters that I don't think they're going to open this up very much. Not after all the Jobsinese about "hardware is just the packaging for great software..." He feels like OSX and Safari are the bees knees so why bother with Linux/MSFT and Firefox.

I'd like a third party app to replace each and every one of my consumer electronics and widgets... iTomTom. iSlingBox. iDVD Player. iGameBoy. iFax. iRSA Token. iMedical Alert. iAlarm System Remote. iCarKeys. iAlarm Clock.

With full OSX, virtually ubiquitous internet connection, and external expansion ports (i.e. dock) what couldn't be put onto an iPhone?

##begin rant##
I'll tell you what... How about the kind that saves lives and makes a real difference in the world? How about the kind that that makes the latest technologies accessible to our first-responders?

http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn6766
http://www.darpa.mil/body/archives/sensit/PI_Briefs/Rosenb...
http://www.llnl.gov/str/JanFeb02/Langlois.html

Other platforms have managed to solve the 3rd party app problem quite easily (Blackberry, Symbian, Palm, WinCE, Linux, etc).

Quit making stupid excuses Steve about why you want to make the platform a closed development environment you greedy jerkwad... Why should our lives depend on substandard technologies like Palm and WinCE?

SCREW YOU STEVE JOBS, STANLEY SIGMAN and the rest of you closed-platform money grubbing whores!
##end rant##

The app I use the most on my Treo is this alarm clock called Treo Alarm that allows me to set my own alarm sound and it updates the weather when the alarm goes off. I use it all the time when traveling. That's all I want. Well, that and for the iPhone to proactively solve tech needs I don't even know I have yet.

Here's my wishlist:

1. WiFi Hotspot Finder and Autoswitcher- Purportedly, the iPhone comes with such a feature. But in case it doesn't, or in case it doesn't work as expected, I'd like to see a hotspot finder with autoswitching that seamlessly selects open hotspots, especially given the lack of 3G on the phone.

2. Orb or Orb like interoperability with OS X- Streaming of media content over the internet and home networks is gaining a lot of attention and is a feature that I'd like to see in the iPhone. If AppleTV can stream content off your laptop why not the iPhone? I believe Sony is opening up the PSP with these features, and current Smartphones have several solutions including Orb and the Slingbox.

3. Pedometer- I'm curious if the built in motion sensors and accelerometers on the iPhone can be adapted to be used like a built in Nike +?

4. GPS Mating via Bluetooth- Since the iPhone lacks built-in GPS it would be nice to be able to mate the iPhone with 3rd party GPS units either via Bluetooth or a connector.

5. Video-conferencing/IM/VoIP- They're probably not quite there yet, and given the absence of a forward facing camera (unless one is hidden under the home button) it may still be a while, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Video iChat would be great. And a Skype client that works over WiFi would be appreciated as well.

Logan5

Skype.

I want to be on a phone call using my cell carrier, walk into WiFi range, conference call in my Skype account, and then hang up the wireless and continue the call on Skype -- for essentially $0.

Oh, and I don't know if it's already there but a Finder would also be nice. And how about the ability for me to cook my own version of that tiny OS10 so that I could hack it up a little bit more?

It's not even necessary to port Outlook to the iPhone. Just provide a means for importing the Outlook planner to iTunes/iPhone every morning. There are already methods for importing/exporting calendar formats, why not just connect that to iCal and iTunes? The cherry-on-top would be to include alerts on the iPhone when an event has a reminder. Standardization makes it all simple!

richard8a

I'm guessing that all this excitement about 3rd party applications might be nipped in the bud when folks realize that Apple and (especially) AT&T are not just going to open up the platform to any developers or applications. I think we'll see an approval process and an "on-deck" model for distribution that will mean the apps will be limited (no emulators, sorry) and expensive. But don't fret; I'm sure that Bubble Bobble will be available, as will all your Crunk games. For a price.

weatherman

I would kind of like to see a remote control system for Microsoft's iTable? Because that would leave my iTable much less fingerprinty. And if it allowed me to hack into a casino's iTable and peek at my opponent's cards, so much the better.

Seriously though: VNC and/or another Remote Desktop application would make the jPhone (Jesus Phone) a support person's dream machine. Not to mention it would totally justify the initial cost + the data rate plan that lets me reboot my server remotely from the bar.

fmccb

AIM and SSH. That's all I really need above what it comes with. I'd like some games, especially PopCap ones, but the biggies are an AIM client and an SSH client.

mewyn dyner
