(my first double comment on a story....Hurah!)

I've been hearing a lot of people bitching that this is too close to big brother and the like. That these images could be used for something more than what google has intended. Granted the bluring of license plates sounds like an ok idea but even that sounds a little paranoid. What, you think someone is going to track you down?

I'm not sure how valid this is. The google car will more than likely only drive down a street once. Any cars parked on the street aren't going to be there again....it's not like these images are constantly updated. However, put this system in a residential area and cars become ripe for the pickin. (though not much more than they already are)

I saw on the news a guy (the didn't show the image) was photographed walking into a porn store. SO WHAT?!? like it really matters to him? I'm sure he'd be more worried about ACTUALLY being seen walking in than in some blurry photo that no one he knows has much of a chance of finding. On top of that google has stated that if anyone has an issue with an image they'll remove it.

I applaud google for what they're doing. nuff said.

So are they going to drive around on EVERY road to get the street view? It is probably stated somewhere what their plans are, but I am lazy. BUT I imagine they won't (drive around everywhere). In that case, I'd volunteer to put one of theose cameras on my car and drive around my town for a few days. How else to get the street view of the whole US (OR WORLD!!!!)? Maybe those micro uav bots with cameras?

I had a similar idea a couple of years ago except for a racing sim where you could drive around your own streets then race on them. i Copywrite that too....so if you're intersted in doin that come get me =)

I don't think this is it, friends, & I do virtual tours.

1) The field of view this 11 sided one creates is a whole sphere, minus the nadir (bottom). The images are donuts, ie, no top or bottom, but rather a cylinder. While the stitched image this 11 eye Argus makes could be reduced to a narrower cylinder, why overshoot? (I know, maybe use the whole thing later . . .); but-

2) The stitching that the images would produce, due to the lens placement, makes a bottomless dodecahedron. (Take another look.)

I have found simple vertical seams in some of the panoramas going all the way from top to bottom which suggest a single row of cameras going around, not this thing. (You know, like when you take your Canon pocket cam and use stitch assist to make a pano: side by side.)

I bet they didn't start out with the 11 eyed Argus. They may be using it now.

I'm pretty sure that they didn't use the Beetle - I saw some picture on the 'net where they caught a reflection of the van they were using in some store window. Actually, there's probably thousands of reflections photos out there.
