Working in a corporate environment, there are lots of servers and folders to access. It would be great to have a finder window that would be self-contained; double clicking would open servers and folders inside like a cell dividing when an organism grows. Each sub window would have its own scrollbar, viewing options just as normal. This would greatly speed up and simplify file management for me. Any thoughts?

tsurfing

You know what, there isn't that much I desperately want to see.

I get on OK with the Finder, I prefer it to Windows Explorer by miles. I don't see the spinning beachball anymore, ever, admitedly I'm on a practically new MacBook 2.16Ghz with 2GB RAM, but I've literally seen it once on this machine and that was for a matter of seconds when iTunes started retrieving album artwork.

I want to see what Core Animation is capable of, I'd LOVE to see Windows apps running natively via a Rosetta style invisible layer, contrary to most I don't buy in to the fact that this would stop people developing for OS X and just do Windows, far from it.

I'd like to see iSync be made a bit more useful again, it's been left a bit weird since they changed it last and along with Address Book it's a small App that could, nay should, be rolled into a larger package.
In XP (and presumably Vista) it is possible to view EXIF data in images through the property window. OSX does not have this capability, and requires the installation of a 3rd party app (EXIF Viewer) to view this information.

Integrating this capability into the finder would make searching for images more useful. Having the added ability to view/edit IPTC tags directly in the Finder would be decidedly useful as well, especially when combined with Automator scripting and such.

TorkLugnutz

I'd like to see Safari become more responsive while scrolling. For example, Safari pauses on this very page during scrolling, as does http://www.apple.com/pro. And that's on the MacBook Pro.

I'd also like to see "Are you sure you want to close multiple tabs?" in Safari. Firefox has this. Heck, even IE7 has this. Session restore on crash would also be nice.

I also vote for fewer beach balls and for iMedia.

discern

Responses to various comments:
1. Left hand pane like Windows Explorer: for the love of G-d, NO! The F in FTFF stands for fix, not f'up.

2. OS X faster than XP: Not the UI, it isn't. XP is much more responsive than OS X, which beachballs anytime you open an app etc. Apple, PLEASE FIX THE FREAKING BEACHBALL OR I WILL KILL MYSELF :-) I am beging you. No beach balls on core 2 duos. This is ridiculous!

3. >For the love of god, give the option to view the entire path >of a file in finder!
Mac noob, are you? Command click on the location of a particular finder window and the entire file path drops down. So if you're in the applications folder, click on the "Application" tag on the center/top of the finder window to see the path. If this is not good enough for you, download FilePath or pathsnagger from versiontracker.

>Also I hate how file names are truncated in the worst possible >way in the column view...

Does it take that much effort expand the name field in the finder?

My wishes: no more beachball, FTFF (but not my making it more like Windows explorer).

KarmaKoan

FTFF: I can copy and paste, let me cut for crying out loud. Give me a real left hand pane too, ala Windows Explorer.

FTFOS: Network share bug was already mentioned, there are a few other bugs that piss me off, like my MBP not playing as nicely with my routers as my PB, (except in Windows...go figure). Make things more snappy.

Safari: Apple should just stop developing it. Camino is my main browser nowadays. Safari doesn't like rendering pages properly (gmail chat anyone?), and crashes if you look at it funny. Oh yeah, I get real happy when I accidently CMD+Q and Safari closes without warning.

Quicktime: Another useless application. Why do you have to pay for it anyway? VLC is free.

More far fetched: Direct3D API's? Bring on da games!

agahnim

I have to say that I'd like to see Finder enhancements, but I'm not sure what they should be.

Windows Explorer in XP is passable, but I feel like Vista's new explorer is like someone took all the good stuff in the Finder (like the sidebar shortcuts) and totally mangled it beyond recognition, further complicating things with new menu bar items, and adding the confusing and busy 'breadcrumbs'. (even though they're useful...)

One thing I'd love to see is for OS X to stop spinning up my attached firewire drive (I leave it in for backup purposes) every time I access a file *on my own internal hard drive*.

*open save dialog* *beachball* *whhurrrRRRRCLICK* *dialog actually opens*

HawkWolf

I agree that ZFS would be fantastic if it were the default/bootable filesystem. I also would echo that I would love for Apple to try to minimize the spinning beachball at every turn. To add to the list, I'd like to see more sophisticated searching in Mail. I moved to Mail from Eudora, and I like the modern components of Mail, but I miss being able to search for content limited to a date range, plus a specific sender, etc. In effect, if they incorporated the kind of control you have when you press command-F in the finder, that would be great.

Schalliol

It would be really nice if they did away with iphoto altogether as an app and just built it into the finder. Any folder full of images should just open up with zoomable thumbs, and printing features. Why should we have to run a separate app when the finder *almost* does this anyway? And the byzantine iphoto filing system should be abolished. I want a folder full of pics, not a folder full of folders full of folders full of pics.

glibberthwix

I said it at the last wwdc, ill say it again, they really need to FFTF, i hope steve is listening!!!!!!

I would like to see MUCH fewer beachball's in Safari and Mail in particular. I agree with the quicktime/itunes integration idea too.

It would also be nice if all of the above mentioned apps including the finder itself were just made to feel peppy and responsive as possible. I've toyed with vista and it just "feels" more zippy (even though actual operations seem to take longer). I dont know how you UI guys can do it, but it would be nice

If they JUST did that stuff, I would be happy, never mind the Time Machine, Spaces, and WebClip stuff. This list is stuff that should have been tackled back in 10.2 but it is still nagging us users some 5 years later.

brandon208402

Here are some I'd like to see:
1. True Full Keyboard Access: Something like what Windows has had for a while. Please please let me be able to do something like option-e-s-t-enter to in 1 second paste special in Excel. You shouldn't have to record a special set of keys to make that happen. It allows groupings for efficiency.
2. Elimination of the dreaded mounted network volume not found lockup: The computer loses a lot of resonsiveness for minutes if a network volume has gone away while mounted.
3. Network delete undo: Currently if you send something to the trash, you get prompted for deleting immediately. There should be some way to undo this action, even if it's only momentarily.
4. Reduced time waiting in the finder
5. Reduced system hang-ups
6. Faster handling of networking volumes
7. Sync'd home directory on AFP/SMB servers (w/o need for OS X Server). It could work like this: a home directory is on one or more network servers, but files get sync'd down locally to improve speed and when the user wishes to go off network. When the user reconnects, it's updated again just like you would normally sync. This of course is grossly oversimplified, but I know that something somewhat similar has been hacked together as of a couple years ago.

Schalliol

@calaverasgrandes: I agree, a stripped down mode should be available, and you're right about Windows getting bulkier and bulkier, but your logic isn't exactly perfect. The number of threads doesn't mean much since different systems use different threads. My Mac runs something like 60 to 80 threads on average, yet still outpaces similarly spec'd WinXP machines running fewer threads. Each thread could consume more CPU, or there could be itty bitty little kernel threads that you can't see in Windows (OS X and all reputable UNIX variants will show you things like cron, but does Windows show you its equivalent?). Plus, there's the fact that out of the 80 or so threads I'm running, probably more than half of them are idle or consuming a handful of clock cycles.

But, just to reiterate, I agree: Stripped-down-to-its-skivvies mode would be nice for the GUI. We've always got Single User mode, but that's not useful when you're kicking out a 720p project in iMovie.

Kichigai Mentat

Type 1 Hypervisor ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypervisor )
Parallels and VMWare are great, but they are Type 2 (the guest OS runs on top of a host OS).

If Apple built a Type 1 Hypervisor into the system then we could run Windows, Linux and OS X side-by-side. Granted... Coherence and Unity are great, don't get me wrong, but this would be the holy grail of seamless, simultaneous Operating Systems.

Think of it as a move for Unification... World peace between the 3 OS Camps... Except with all Apple hardware. And who could say that that wouldn't just make the world a better place?

I think Apple should not buy Parallels... at least not now. If they do, VMware will exit and you can say goodbye to a competition that forces both companies to push the envelope. It's all in Apple's advantage to let these two companies do their thing for now, while providing them support (and BootCamp).

jmdecombe

how much more do we have to put up with features being "windows only" like cnn.com and other such websites. i'd like to assume that apple is a powerful figure in the computer world, so why are things STILL not compatible?

MacAddict21

Regarding the Parallels part of the wishlist, I couldn't help but notice that Parallels 3.0 was released in very close time proximity to Boot Camp 1.3b.

Could Apple already be in bed with the Parallels team?

We should look for a ramp-up of development on the part of Parallels (i.e. much like the very major upgrade that comes with 3.0) much like what happened with Coverflow prior to Apple purchasing that software and integrating it into iTunes.

altempo

My wishlist is that is ships on the 11th, and comes with the new HD MacBook Pro I was finally able to order when my wife wasn't looking (Thank God for "girls day out"!)...

As for your iPhone integration. Since my buddy is a big shot at Apple's developer relations, I happen to know that the level is much higher than anyone thinks, but a lot of it is coming with Dot Mac, If you have a Dot Mac account and an iPhone then practically everything, including mail, bookmarks, key chains, etc will sync with iPhone and you Macs.

No new Finder, but something very much like Paralells is coming. Think Paralells "Coherence" idea, done the Apple way.

Now, if Jobs really reads this blog I think he's going to know who posted this, what with my screen name and all. If this post disappears over the weekend you'll know why. But, then again, I didn't give everything away, did I steve?
I would really like to see all three mentioned above, as well as alot of convergence and clean-up. iTunes needs to absorb QuickTime and become iMedia, once and for all. Safari needs the hell to be updated out of it. Firefox is necessary at this point for some websites, and I hate having redundant applications. I'm on the fence about mating iCal, Address Book, and Mail into something like Entourage... But if it works for Microsoft (something rare), it should be even better if Apple does it.
I just want my easy Mac to become easier... The Kraft kind too...

QWERTYthon

Actually I think the Finder is pretty well done. Even if people think it sucks then at least we know it's better then windows' explorer which sucks mega shlong. Mac's window system is better too. Heck the entire OS is better right down to the EFI

CarbonatedWater

I want to be able to have sync folders...folders that would stay the same on two computers autmatically, without the need for a pricey, pointless, .Mac account. It would just use the internets to send files back and forth somehow...I don't quite know. And setup would be really easy. You'd email yourself a link, click that link, and, as Steve would say, boom.

jsimondsmalamud
