Well, you could ask the same thing about Google Maps. Going beyond a generic browser interface does allow them to do extra things (e.g., hitting the number to call a restaurant), but how that would apply to YouTube is unclear. As I already said, the YouTube access is going be enabled across the board by iTunes, just like Apple already did with podcasts.

Just because the ads filled in one missing icon doesn't mean you should ignore the completely empty row at the bottom. I have it on good authority that the ads intentionally filled in just the one app so that Apple could track down leakers by seeding each different app (plus some fake ones) to multiple channels. Anybody who spills the inside story on the one secret app they know about will probably not have a job with Apple anymore next month.

The YouTube thing is pure guess work, though. The truth is that, of course, it would be stupid for either YouTube or Apple to put all that effort into bringing the videos only to Apple TV. It's naturally going to be a widespread integration across the line via iTunes. So the iPhone will definitely be playing YouTube videos, but mainly by virtue of it being an iPod that syncs with iTunes. Like FuzzysFriedChicken said, downloading video over EDGE would not be pretty.

I doubt you need it, but if you're stuck somewhere with nothing to do, its a nice way to pass the time.

Honestly, I don't think the iPhone is about need. Humans got along for a long time without cellphones at all. Or computers. If they wanted it to satisfy actual needs, they would probably have made it edible.

Anyway youtube and iphone are a nice match for the screen res....YouTube kinda sucks on computers on tv because the video's resolution are pretty small. I'd think it would look just about right on an iphone.

However, don't discount that AT&T has a lot of reason to want this. They're not making a penny on the iPhone its self, just the contracts. So they'd love to get you into a basic data plan and then bill you for the data overages when you watch that stupid cat video 1000 times.
