Dezinewiz: H.264 good, allows for hi-def Mpeg-4 (tho most youtube vids are pretty low quality). Apple puts H.264 hardware in everything now, envision hi-def video conferencing on iphone. Also hardware enc/decod means longer battery life and not being subject to Macromedia changing Flash whoozitz.

Djeet

The iPhone is hardly the first mobile phone to support H.264. The Nokia N93, N93i and N95 (and others) all support H.264 video, and as "Baaaaaa" pointed out, the N95 already offers limited YouTube service as part of Nokia's "Video Centre" application. (Note: I work for Nokia)

olevine

BASS ACKWARDS!

Ummm, wouldn't it have been far easier to simply allow the iPhone to have Flash capability, rather than putting poor You Tube through the torture of converting all of their videos??

Apple is the computer genius, and they probably know what's best. It just appears a bit ridiculous.

I just downloaded for AppleTV. Pretty cool Tivo-like interface when you are searching. Quality is fairly poor when you are checking it out on a 65" plasma. Also I don't like watching video that isn't full screen on my plasma and most of the YouTube video are full screen. It would be better if it had porn.

What really sucks when you apply the update is that it erases everything on your AppleTV. This might be as I replaced the original drive with a 160GB drive. It takes a long time to upload over 100GB of music, videos and photos!

Has anyone downloaded the update for the AppleTV?

Just curious to see if the quality is the same with H.264 as it is for Flash video... or if YouTube had somehow stored an "original" version of the videos and converted from those. The h.264 version could potentially look better in that case.

okeo

Food for thought:
1) Apple announced that YouTube will be streamed via EDGE or Wi-Fi. Streamed.
2) EDGE is much less intensive, battery-wise
3) it's H.264

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't this make it rather possible and realistic to at least watch a 25-minute TV episode? And since it's streaming, wouldn't have to wait to download the whole file.

IdentityBureau

Ah, now I get the question. I'd think that eventually you would be able to buy content via the iPhone, but Steve said during a recent interview that this was impractical at this point.

The YouTube videos are much smaller in size, lower resolution, etc. I can't imagine a scenerario where Apple would offer "mobile video" and "high res video" via iTMS. Maybe they will have a subscription model. Who knows? For now, I think bandwidth is the issue. iTMS files are pretty big, and EDGE will be way too slow to buy content.

For now, I'm under the impression that content will be transfered via PC based iTMS only.

alywa

Allow me to clarify... iTunes Store access with the ability to make purchases via EDGE or WiFI. Although I find this painfully obvious, the notion's often refuted as being impractical and that all video/music files will be loaded via dock.

IdentityBureau

I can watch youtube on my N95, seriously what is all this wanking on about the iphone!?

Like most of the iPhones's features, it is not that it is new or revolutionary. It will be the interface.

On your n95, do you access YouTube via browser or via a dedicated app? Is it slick, or cludgy?

For example, I can access YouTube on the Wii. It sucks. The interface is cumbersome, searching is tedious, and I find it really isn't worth it. Apple-TV would likely be much slicker. I see the iPhone -vs- other phones being that way.

/I could be dead wrong, however. None of us have actually played with the thing yet.

alywa

Questions?

Since the phone is wi-fi. Could you technically run Skype or similar app on it? I know that adding applications is not standard, but much like Apple TV I bet it gets hacked to do that rather quickly. And since you don't get a discount on the phone can you just buy it and cancel the cell-plan after a couple of days and get out of the contract and keep the phone since it's not discounted anyway? This way you would have internet, ipod and skype phone with no contract, perfect for me.

Mayor McRib

Yes, in addition to the H.264 advantage, I think the key here is that you can "easily navigate through YouTube's familiar video browsing categories or search for specific videos." YouTube's mobile portal seems like a menu of preconfigured clips, a "baby pool" so to speak.

Wilson Rothman
