There's a ton of white space on the right side, the headlines are too small, the ginormous ads are... yeah. I like the new font and the whole login thing, but I think this new look needs a lot of work.

Also, I get the sneaking suspicion that I'm just missing certain headlines because they feel more like ads than actual headlines for this blog.

I'd rather have more headlines on the first page, as opposed to something that just shows me what's on the second page. I might be in the minority for that one.

Also, I kinda miss the days when all comments would be loaded on one page, no matter how many there were. I guess that was a bandwidth issue, but I liked it.

The new font feels nice, and having the jobs on the left means you're going to stop talking about them in posts, right? Right? Oh wait, no it doesn't. Nevermind.

There's a lot of potential here, and change isn't inherently bad. I just think this needs more work before it's groovy.

The new layout looks messy and amateurish, with weird whitespace and inconsistent entry layout. Make up your mind whether the pics come before or after the headlines. (After, please.) Placing article info to the right is okay, but having the same layout for comments is not okay. I could get used to the Page 2 summary, but the location of the actual Page 2 link is visually undifferentiated from the summary. Make it bigger or something.

Chapter 2: Firefox 2.
Does. Not. Work. I get two articles, then what might be a truncated headline that's been sucked into the Page 2 summary. There's no Page 2 link anywhere. (FF 1.5/Linux looks better.) Are you seriously designing for IE? Who's your audience?

Chapter 3 Whatever.
The only thing I hated about the old layout is still hatey: There's no "next" link at the top of the page. Also, the spraypaint effect at the top-left eats the black tagline.

Hmmm. It's different, yet some things are the same. I'm trying to figure out if I like the crinkly paper lefthand border, and the spraycan contrast at top left. I'll sleep on it.


So the thing that really stands out for me, though, is that the front-end posts are a little too short, now. Maybe it's one of those editorial decisions, but I liked the old short paragraph approach.


One thing I really do like, though, is how all the posts on the front page say who made them. I have my fave writers at Giz, and it makes it much easier to see who did what. In the old system, attribution on the front page was spotty.


As for another 'likey', I think having older headlines at the bottom is great. Sometimes I can't check the page but a couple times a week, and it'll be easier to spot the posts I haven't seen.


Finally, showing a last comment next to each story's 'MORE>>' doesn't really add much. It's nice and everything, but I'm never going to click through to 'read more' based on what the last comment was.


Anyhow, I can see that there are a lot of commenters that don't likey so much, and my guess is that's just part of not being able to please everyone. I'll still read, and still comment, but it will feel kinda different for awhile.

But so far, I like the redesigned left sidebar...it's more compact and it doesn't stand out as much. I see some good things and bad things, but for the most part, the new design needs some cleaning up and slight revisions. Possibly making pics for some articles bigger on the front page would be a good thing.
Just clean up the new design a little and take some feedback and make changes accordingly, then come back for some more feedback until everyone is satisfied...

Pros of old:

- The whole screen fills up with content. I got nothing on the right side (20" wide screen)

It's much more user friendly to read straight down after you're done reading the main article/post. I don't like having to look to the side everytime to see who posted it.

I'm using IE7 and it looks crappy. In fact, the Gizmodo site before looked crappy sometimes and was hard to load my own user page. It's probaly not an IE7 problem of course, since Gizmodo is the only site I've had problems with. So obviously Gizmodo is not very browser friendly, are they? I much prefer the old layout. If you haven't noticed.

I really like the new fonts, sizing, and layout ideas (once the overlays are fixed). As it is now though, there is waaaay too much white space on the right, with all of the content bunched up against the ad side-bar on the left.


Definitely don't dig the comment authors listed to the right of the comment. I kind of like seeing who wrote what I'm reading before i read it.


Also not uber-keen on the "latest comment" feature on the front-page. It just looks kind of messy.


More Gobot than Transformer at this point, but it's got some potential, length, and upside.
