Well.. let them do whatever they want with the iPhone... if it's theirs, of course.
People do spend their money in such ways.
They smashed the iPhone and posted it on video. I've seem people spending much more for doing much less and doing yet more harm on videos.

But if that was one of those "I'll post a video of me smashing the iPhone just for popularity", that was just fucking dumb.
Video sucks, quality is horrible, no lighting, only one camera caught the action, and nothing more.

It was worthless for iPhone fans, and worthless for iPhone haters.

What's scary is that one of these guys has a wedding ring on his hand...I doubt the leading tech journalists were "bribed" but some of them are as old as my father. I was also astonished that Walt Mossberg didn't have trouble typing on the thing because it seems like he has trouble with small buttons and anything that requires any amount of manual dexterity.

What's more likely is that these guys broke it open as fast as possible to see who made the components. At the time this video surfaced, after-hours trading was still possible. iPhone came out at 6pm EST with after-hours orders running until 8pm EST. So whatcha wanna bet these guys placed some trades ten minutes after cracking it open? $600 to get actionable, profitable intelligence.

Hi I am a user of a tech support site and recently I saw they added the iPhone PDAs from Apple into their database. Few hours after the launch of the iphone there were allready lots of troubleshooting and support questions.

So we'll ignore the positive appraisals by some of the leading tech reviewers (I'm sure they were bribed), and we'll also ignore the very positive polls of recent buyers (maybe these people are swayed too easily by shiny things). I agree that some people drink the iPhone cool-aid, but others such as yourself seem to have consumed something that makes you too anti-iPhone to see that the phone does many things better than any other phone (even yours). Blindly negative haters like yourself are worse than the crazy iPhone fanatics. The phone has good points and bad points, and if you can't see the good and the bad then you're too caught up in tech politics to make a rational appraisal.

@zeb: i would never claim the iphone is perfect, but enough people apparently feel that having a system that works well and simply is better than a system that can do many things, but not very well.

I had a zaurus at one point, and for it's time, it had a good deal of features. Except for battery life. Apple is well known for dictating ro people what they need. In the end they'll make something that makes some ppl very happy, and others very mad.

Personally I much rather have the small form factor and extended battery lidlce ober all those features. And the 2.5g rreally is 't so bad. It's nplot meant to replace the desktop, but rather provide a mobile platform.

No stylus, no hardware keyboard, no bluetooth file transfer, no bluetooth audio, half vga, 2g phone and 2g internet, no removable battery, no flash or java, no voice dialing, no recording, no IM, no memory card slot, no mms, no video recording, no gps, no file explorer, no custom ringtones, etc. The list goes on and on. It's amazing how carelessly Gizmodo and other blogs touted this device as the ultimate smartphone when it's anything but smart.

I can understand a scientific study of what the iPhone can take, especially from a magizine like Consumer Reports, but I really don't understand people's need to (a) destroy stuff just for the fun of it, and (b) waste money in such a senseless fashion. How many more people do we need both destroying and taking apart these products (besides which, for the people taking them apart, you should send the remaining parts to hackint0sh)?

Yes, it's these people's money. Yes, they can do what they want with it. But it's hard for not to think of how the money could go to feed a starving family, help improvished countries, or go to help families torn apart by wars. I'm not saying you need to spend all your money. I have an iPhone myself -- I'm not advocating giving up all your material posessions to save the world. I am suggesting that maybe people actually try to start acting more like humans beings. It's okay to love the gadgets, but it doesn't mean you can't think about other people too.

I will never understand the people who protest and/or show their disapproval of a product (or company, I suppose) by spending several hundred dollars on said item (the money going to said company) just so they can publicly destroy it.

That said, I think this video is a bit of a backfire. With two people, a hammer and a screwdriver, it still took abou 20 seconds of continuous pounding just to break the GLASS screen. This is practically an iPhone commercial highlighting it's resilience to harm.
