Perhaps the real question behind this thread is: "WHY is the Bluetooth on the iPhone SO crippled?" Scan the first page of the voluminous Legal disclaimer (Settings>About>Legal) on the iPhone and it lists the Bluetooth license as BlueMagic from Open Interface. Check out the company site, and it's obvious that the software stack supports every Bluetooth profile and protocol under the sun. So *why* did Apple disable all those capabilities? (For instance, you mentioned the Motorola S9s for wireless stereo - how come a cheap (relatively) Motorola phone support this great music feature, but the oh-so-hip iPhone doesn't??) Are they just waiting until all the official Apple BT accessories are ready for sale?

Ondemon

I'm looking forward to Sony Ericsson's W960, it included 2 head phone adaptors, one of which is a blue tooth set. Has all the functions a blue tooth should have, has 3.5mm jack for you to switch to a better ear phone.

Oh, and it's stereo. :P

Come on, people. Don't self-hyptonise yourself. iPhone is nice, but it's over priced with less features than we expected.

Nokia, SonyEricsson, Samsung, and LG are much, much better choices for a cell phone. Heck, even Motorola are nice!

It all comes down to it. Why do we need a phone... and what do we need in a phone?

As far as I've seen, iPhone is pretty and nice, but it isn't pratical enough.

iPhone mentioned alot of features, but only a few are living up to the common standards...
(Quantity over quality, I guess)

big-daddy

I have a $30 Sony Ericsson Z520 which AT&T left with all its bluetooth motor skills, including file transfer of any variety. I have never purchased a single ringtone, jpg, or utility and when I do transfer said files it can use each one as a ringtone, background, or application. For $600, I think my phone had better operate how I want it to. And I'm no heathen, but Jesus was in recent times proven to be a murderer, liar, and a cheat. The iPhone likeness is startling isn't it?

mistersiegfried

Just wanted to drop a post that the iPhone is having no problems with Sony Ericsson bluetooth headsets for talking, I have also connected with my Garmin Nuvi and have complete operation through the nuvi of my phone book, calls, recent calls et cetera. I was pleasantly surprised to see it link considering Apples temporary bluetooth lockout for so many products.

jimcord

The BlueTooth on the iPhone does a bit more than handle audio in calls. That's an accurate description of my Sidekick 3, which (according to Apple's BlueTooth pane in System Preferences) supports "Generic Audio", and "File Send and Receive".

The iPhone supports:

Generic Audio
Headset
irMC Sync
Phonebook

The fourth item in that list definitely makes it much more usable in the car with my Garmin Nüvi360 GPS when using its dialing capabilities for hands-free use.

macserv

How does that make someone a "yuppie"? Just because people have developed an understanding of basic functionality that they expect from their Bluetooth Enabled device, doesn't mean they are a yuppie. I expect my car will have a horn, seatbelts, and airbags. Sure, the manufacturer had to add them on (like a profile), but it is expected that they will be there when I buy the car.

I don't really mind that you used the term "Yuppie" for iPhone users, as I think most of them are yuppies, or will be in a few years. However, I think there are other ways to justify the label.

bluetoothguy

No matter how nice the interface is, this phone is crippled in so many ways that for me it would be a $599 paperweight. I use bluetooth photo printers on a regular basis with my N95, and I send a ton of MMS picture messages to my friends with a variety of phones. And with the short battery life being exposed (as I knew it would), and no replaceable battery...tell me how nice the interface is when the phone is dead and you are stuck in an airport on a delayed flight with no power jacks in sight. At least the the N95 I can carry an emergency battery.

So to sum it up from what I've read so far.
GSM signal makes all audio devices around it buzz - and loudly. No standard MMS. Sucky camera with no video (a feature my wife and I use daily). Bad battery life, and jacked up plans from AT&T. And no third party apps that work on the phone unless you are online...which might not work everywhere here in Colorado where I live. Also, edge cannot do voice and data at the same time.

I'll pass. Oh, and I followed the iPhone keynote with rapture...but the follow-through killed it.

targatop

You people are funny! "All of these flaws can be fixed in software". Isn't that true in most phones. The fanboys complain about Windows Mobile (even though most have never used it) but the same argument holds. I am neither a fanboy nor a hater (own PCs and Macs) but get real people. This phone is currently lacking features common on a high percentage of other phones. Quit trying to justify your purchase, admit the flaws, and hope for updates. Without removable storage, you can't even do the old pop-the-SD-card-and-stick-it-in-a-media-reader trick. Without file transfer and OBEX, the only way you're gonna get anything new onto (or off of) the thing is through the dock. And iTunes. Which means only content Apple approves gets on there. Wait- there are phones with intelligent bluetooth routing? I actually threw my BT headset away because the routing and battery drain rendered it useless. BT file transfers are so damn slow, it was easier to get an MMC reader and just turn my phone off, pop the chip out (oh, my phone has issues if I take the chip out while it's running- that shouldn't happen) and let iPhoto rip them off there. When you've got 100 1280xwhatever photos on your phone, bluetooth is not an option.

Oh, suffice to say, it doesn't support file management. The only way to move files off my phone is by building a BT message- and that's six screens of heartache.

So... this doesn't strike me as an issue. I'm still hung up on that $600 thing. Maybe when it's $300, I'll think about it.

t3knomanser

Hahaha. Man. American cell carriers suck. And now, Apple does, too. They are giving us an inferior product purely because AT&T wants to bone the consumer ever harder.

I laugh because my unlocked Nokia does all of that. I don't have to deal with anything. I also laugh because the iPhone is too much a phenomenon. People will hack it to bits to do all of the things it SHOULD have done to begin with (MP3 ringtones, anyone?). In fact, I'm somewhat surprised the locks haven't been hacked already.

Wow - this makes news but the fact that WM6 doesn't let you make clear calls using BT doesn't?

I think the iPhone definitely needs to have something like VC via BT on the other hand, having VC to make phone calls but people can't understand what you are saying because MS did such a piss poor job with the BT stack doesn't do anything for anyone either.

MS F'ed up the BT stack in all previous versions but now they are going that extra step to making unusable for phone calls. Not sure who I should be more dissappointed in - HTC for not getting it fixed since they work with MS, MS for not ever getting something right the first, second, third...time or Apple for not making something that has full exchange activesync capabilites, voice command capabilities, and a fast network so that I can get out of this POS WM6 hell.

boe

I'm kinda shocked how they still try to control you even after you've bought the phone. There was a big hoopla here in the UK when a couple of network operators crippled the VoIP functions on one of the Nokia handsets, everyone avoided them like the plague. I've been bluetoothing everything together for years, it's no wonder that people are starting to import phones from Europe.

Twinnie

Seriously guys, the phones not that spectacular. Does it have some interesting features? Yeah. Does it break some new ground here and there? Yeah. About an inch deeper than other phones/devices out there.

Is it the most overhyped device to launch in years? Quite. The phones missing things it "needs" and people gloss over it to make it sound great.

No 3g and no A2DP support on a phone that is respectively being sold as "the internet in your pocket" and "a phone and a media device" is just silly. It's a wireless world and you can't listen to your music in stereo through the plethora of stereo bluetooth headsets out now and it's got "The internet in your pocket" yeah, my parents internet, the one that starts off with the sound of a modem screeching into the remote end to establish that "fat chicks racing ass deep in mud" speed.

I agree with RAZORDU30. If this was a Microsoft phone, all of you Apple fanboys would be bitching up a storm...."OH MY GOD LOL MICROSOFT CRIPPLED IT!!! MICROSOFT SUCKS!!!!1 HAHAHAHA!!!"

Although, AT&T, being the thieves they are, probably told Apple to remove tethering support so people who really need to tether would be stuck buying an additional phone or aircard with a much more expensive plan. Shame on AT&T for being greedy, and shame on Apple for giving into AT&T.
@EUKARYOTE
I agree - I paired the iPhone with my MacBook Pro, and then tried to dial from the Addres book on the laptop - no good. That would certainly be a nice feature to enable through software upgrades, and I would be surprised if it wasn't on the list.

@Tommo_UK
I am not sure that software upgrades are comparable to car repairs - the iPhone is pretty functional now, and works as advertised. What comes now are improvements, along with some fixes. But that is also pretty universal in the world of computers and technology - ever taken your car in for a recall that fixed something that had not become a problem for you personally yet?

oliverbogler

For crying out loud, relax! Its just come out. This isn't your normal cell phone. Its a proper Mac, in a phone form factor, with all a Mac's capabilities. I would guess that when they delayed Leopard, they also had to delay a raft of functionality that had been based on Leopard APIs and technologies as-yet unfinished. When they're done, all of these issues will be addressed, including using the iPhone as a file storage device, mounting it on the desktop as an external drive - wirelessly, streaming photos, music and video to the Apple TV, and countless other wonderful things.

Now stop wetting your knickers with rage; all good things will come to those who wait. Apple practically popularised WiFi and seamless Bluetooth integration before anyone else did - the iPhone won't disappoint in this area in the end.

Can't send files via Bluetooth? That kinda sucks. My Samsung SGH-D807 does it, and it's definitely useful. For example:

Last week, I'm at work and created an archive folder of some small, freeware applications. Gmail wouldn't send it cause it contained an executable file. I didn't have a flash drive on me, and all that was handy was a blank DVD, which I didn't want to waste for such a small amount of data. I just sent it to my phone, and when I got home, sent it to my laptop. Great use of technology that I wish the iPhone would have and really think it should have.

iSmoteThee

Give it some time. Jobs already announced that the company is planning two years of iPhone software updates for this first-gen model and I find it impossible to believe that the ability to pair with a mac (and pc) for use as an EDGE modem is not going to happen. This feature is built into OSX and there's no way they're going to make their own phone LESS compatible with OSX than the competition. As far as file transfer, that may be another story. Apple seems a little paranoid about third-party apps mucking up their interface. I really can't blame them - even software from reliable companies like Adobe have screwed up my Macs before and I was blaming OSX until we found the culprit.

Rob Daniel

@bobvilla: What? How exactly is stripping functionality a "security feature?" That's like giving a car gas but no pedal and calling it an "accident deterrent."

Paradise

And Giz forgot the fourth thing: it can't link to a BT-enabled GPS transceiver.

But it can't send a photo via BT to a BT-enabled printer? That is just pathetic! My $50 Samsung can do that!

Omega

Wow, routing the audio to headset, speaker or phone eh? Amazing.

Whatever will Gizmodo find out next? That the iPhone supports DTMF? Or that it can send AND receive text messages?

scoobydoo

Uhh yeah, routing the audio to phone/bt is nothing special. Sony Ericsson phones has always been like that. If you answer by touching the phone it goes to the phone, or if you answering by pressing your BT, it goes to your BT.

Nachobel: No iPhone to iPhone BT transfers don't work. Nothing does. BT is just for Headset.

nXt

My SE K750i does this as well. All phones don't do this? Wow. That's absolutely pathetic. Also, crippled bluetooth? I realise carriers are trying to charge you for every bit of info you get on your phone, but assuming you're able to download and save things off the 'net via WiFi with the iPhone...what's the difference?

Do phone-phone transfers work?

nachobel

Crippled Bluetooth sucks.
Routing the call is nice, but my years old Siemens S55 does it, too. And if I'm right even my archaic Ericsson T39m has this capability.
Nothing really special.

mangochutney
