Do those of you who argue FOR backwards compatibility have any IDEA what that actually means within the realm of reality?? I'm all for scrapping current designs every 5 years, and starting from scratch. New processor architecture (the most advanced as possible for the time), new versions of old programs necessary to buy (obviously I'd think that if one already owns the program then the upgrade should only cost them 10-30% of the total 'new' cost -- enough to pay for R&D of newer version, plus a few bucks extra for more profit, but that's it. Any more would be unfair and ruin this wonderful plan for everyone).
Building in backwards compatibility makes systems slow, cumbersome, more prone to crashes, bloated. I have a Hungarian cousin-in-law who has an IQ well above 200 (of course, doesn't earn shit working for government office of experimental and applied physics) who reads the technical manual for the Pentium processors 'for a laugh'. He states (and believe me, this guy you can trust he knows exactly what he's talking about) says that due to "having to build in backwards compatibility" we're slowing down progress significantly. This pisses me off. I understand industry doesn't want to pay any more for a program they 'bought' already, but in the name of progress, and science, and awesome cutting edge over the top video games (most important to me :^) I think the extra cost is justified and should be the practice. Why slow down R&D to save AT&T (or whatever business we're talking about) a few bucks every 5 years????

banmojo

I have a Wii and an Elite, and I really don't see putting out any additional cash on a PS3 when they are not getting the exclusive titles that are worth the extra dough. The Elite was a no-brainer because of Halo 3. The Wii is fun for when friends come over. The PS3 has NO compelling features (Blu-Ray included) that will push me to spend $500 for a 60 GB or $600 for an 80 GB game console. Ultimately it comes down to the games. If they are not there, no one is going to spend any amount of money to buy it. My Wii was $249 and is a helluva lot funner than anything I've seen on the PS3. I hate to see Sony continue this slow train-wreck but they only have themselves to blame.

archetype94306

I hate all these people that are saying the software backward compatibility is "half-assed" and "reduced functionality". WTF are you talking about. It may not be perfect but last time I checked 1600+ ps2 games worked without a problem with software BC! And sony will only increase that number. And if you're worried about having some games that aren't in those 1600+, then you should just use your freaking PS2! Damn!

And if you've already forgotten, it's not just the 20GB that's added with the 80GB; you get motorstorm. No matter how much you might not care for that game, it costs sony and the motorstorm devs money to just give it to you. Overall, I doubt sony's making any more money on this 80GB version than they were with the $600 60GB version.
(the EE is very cheap, right?) So in reality the only ones who are greedy douchebags are some of you people.

I don't necessarily like this decision to get rid of the 60GB, I think it will actually hurt the ps3. But please people, try to be sensible!

Jitty

Well Sony, you really fucked up here, did you not notice that your system has now surpassed the Wii, Guitar Hero, and the Xbox 360 on Amazon.com's best seller list. Yup, thats all thanks to your $100 dollar price drop, I predicted that it will remain at the #1 spot until the Wii becomes readily available to everyone....but now, by being the greedy bastards that you are, you pretty much screwed yourselves. Just by looking at Amazon.com, you should be able to tell that America wants a 500 dollar PS3, no, not the shitty 20gb model with no Wi-Fi/Card Readers, Were talking about 499.99 being the price for the ultimate gaming system on the market... Havnt you ever wondered why the number of PS3's sold is LESS THAN HALF of the amount you fellas shipped, its not because the PS3 is a poor system. Its simply the price-tag, it destroys the market for almost anyone in their teen years. I want to buy a 360, but their accessories are so damn expensive, and they have one of the worst reputation for quality manufacturing in video game system history, but they have the best game selection. The Wii... Hell no I will not buy a Wii. The PS3 really seemed to be the prime choice for me, but freakin' 600 dollars is a no-no. I don't need freakin' 60gb of storage, much less 80gb. The xbox's 20gb storage is perfect, I understand that only like 15 is usable, but all I want to do is load some of my Original Xbox games as well as my CDs onto it. I just want to be able to play some kick-ass games, sadly, the PS3 has none to offer. But Resident Evil 5, Halo 3, Dirt, Forza 2, Gears of War, GTA 4.... Oh, and over half the games I just mentioned are Xbox 360/Vista exclusive. Whats the PS3 got? Ridge Racer? Moterstorm? Resistance?? Oh yeah, those are some nice exclusive titles.

So ready or not, here I come Xbox 360.

Mario

I'm sorry, but am I the only person left on the planet who just wants to play great games. I don't care about Bluray, I don't care about PS2 software/hardware emulation, I don't care about out of the box intergrated WiFi. I don't even care about 60g vs 80g hard drives. I would rather spend $399 for a stripped down version of the PS3 that has just enough memory to complete the blockbuster games Sony keeps promising. Oh and they better be blockbusters, if even one of them fails to live up to the hype, Sony is toast.

myxtplyktz

VOOHOO: are you kidding?

The problem is the PS3 will still cost 599$ or 599E in europe... their is no "price cut", theirs a sale on the 60gb model to get rid of them...

Thats not a "price cut" thats a "discontinuation sale" because in a few months the price of the ps3 will still be 599$ to get one because their wont be any more 60gb models left...

they really dont want the average joe to have a ps3... first they kill the budget 20gb then they kill the 60gb ... wtf is with sony.

they aknoledge that the price is too high... so they slightly increase the hd and keep the price the same? WTF

Bigger HD doesn't make it easier to shell out 600$ for a frigging system thats supposed to be for GAMERS.

phantam

Sony is not pulling a "dick move" or being "douchbags," they are just trying to adjust to mistakes they've made. I think that they still believe in their $599 price point, not just from a business perspective, but from a genuine value perspective. So, yes, it makes since for them to sell a lot of machines for cheap while they can, then later add on a controller and a game, which costs them very little, but again assumes the consumer will appreciate the value. Its really quite simple, and kind of smart. In fact, what this will do is two things: For one, it will pressure some of the more savvy consumers (dare I say, people like Gizmodo readers) to buy the 60GB now, and the not so savvy consumers (dare I say Gizmodo readers) to be convinced they are getting a good deal later with the bundle -- which conent-wise, they are, but are really paying a large amount of the $599 for similar COST to Sony.
In other words, shut up and buy your console now and stop being such babies about it.

ibelli

Yes, it seems like the 60 GB versions are the gems, indeed. I'm glad I got mine 3 months ago (bought it used at around 470). I'm hoping to see somekind of pie chart of the different market groups that are buying the PS3.

Sony is looking like Dell computers... each month they'll introduce a new version, and liquidate the previous older model. We've already seen this with the 20gb version.

domerdel

This is why Sony is losing the next-gen console war.

They pull a dick move like this. I was really interested in purchasing a PS3 once i heard about the price drop, but i probably wasn't going to get it for a couple months. Now that i hear this, i am no longer interested because I know i can't find another PS3 for $499.

THX has a point but remember in an interview which recently took place with the devs behind the ps3 1.80 update, Sony WANTS to move away from hardware compatibility from the emotion engine why? because with software emulation that can literally raise the internal resolution of the ps2 games. They already said they can do it with the ps1 games but are waiting until the ps2 software emu is solid enough to impliment upscaling by first doubling the internal resolution of the games.

This will also end up allowing for bilinear filtering and maybe even anti aliasing

devil-illusion

Question:

Does that mean that Sony will always support the Emotion Engine? I just know that Sony will push an upgrade to the firmware that disables the EE, and forces ALL consoles to use the emulation. If I actually trusted Sony to continue support for the EE consoles I would buy one. As it stands now, I can't trust them

tomasland

I don't see where the problem is, if you were holding on getting a PS3 because the price, you should get one now since it's 100$ cheaper and widely available.
If you want to buy it for 499$ during the holidays because you are just about to start saving , you should probably get the Wii, or a even a gamecube !

What isn't being said is that the real reason for this is to move away from the current 60GB American units as they have the PS2 HARDWARE compatibility system - as opposed to the rest of the world which has the "half-assed" software compatibility.

The new US 80GB units will gain 20GB in space, and lose the HARDWARE compatibility - opting for the MUCH CHEAPER software system. If you can find a 60GB unit in the US now that the price has dropped, and you are at all interested in a PS3 - BUY IT!!!

THX

And is 20G really "that big a deal" in the long run?

If you didn't like the 60G price point pre-cut, will that _really_ encourage you to spend the same on the 80G? I wouldn't think so.

I bet some people are willing to spend the $100 less for the 60G post-price drop, but if it is only going to last so long, Sony will be in the same boat they were in a week ago.

scrag
