Second, if you hate the ads so much, use Firefox like a sane person, and adblock the ads. If you still complain about ads in this day an age, you're an idiot.

Tony Bullard

People: Learn to deal with news that won't be your exact cup of tea. If I have to suffer the news about the stupid Japanese novelty gadgets and PS3 articles then you can damn well suffer some steampunk-esque comments from time to time. You go to a place because in average it contains things you like. As long as Gizmodo has stuff I like (on average) I can deal with the odd article I'm not interested in.

On the ads (one "d", it's not that hard and you do look like a moron when you misspell it): Whoever suffers advertising in webpages nowadays is because they like it. I read the Giz through RSS and use adblock. I understand websites need the ads to cover for costs but I also know I've never clicked nor will I ever click on a banner so I don't feel bad filtering them out.

If you choose not to use RSS and not to block the ads on the page then just filter them out visually and/or ignore them. It's not that hard. We do it all the time in newspapers, magazines and bannered TV Shows.

Calaveras: You're on a losing side there. This was argued already a decade ago and didn't hold. The term "Steampunk" was first used tongue-in-cheek and sadly it stuck (probably because it's easy to remember and sounds cool). The name is completely disconnected from any reference to Cyberpunk and doesn't try to justify itself, it's just what it is. You can't change it because it's not supposed to be logical.

So suggest away, but it will be for naught.

eduo

yeah um the ads arent that bad. The Wamu bankers pen ads on adultswim are fuggin LAME.

About "steam punk"
Cyber punk kinda made sense back in the 70's-80's. Punk was a relevant trend. Cyber punk injected a new cynicism into the scifi genre.
Steam Punk as a genre is neither cynical nor relevant to punk (which itself trickles onward as a subculture somehow).
It is just repackaged 19th century romanticism. You know, those annoying kids in high school that read Shelley/Byron and Poe obsessively?
Steam punk
I suggest you change the "steam geh" or "vintage multimedia".

calaverasgrandes

First, steampunk is rapidly approaching lolcats for annoying overuse. Maybe it's the "hip new thing" but man, it's getting played out. Fast.

Second, they are "ads" as in short for "advertisement" - grammar Nazi or not, christ - learn to spell so you don't look like a moron.

Third, the horizontal banners could be a little less obtrusive, the side banners aren't that horrible. So unless we're all going to start chipping in to maintain the Giz writers in the manner to which they've obviously become accustomed - stfu & deal.

FubarGuy

I agree, the old design was great. You need to fix this, it looks terrible. I've read this site for a while, back when Joel was here. He was funny and will be missed. Just when the newer writers started hitting their stride, bam, terrible design change.

The Lab

Glad to see the staff at gizmodo is continuing to destroy what once was a really nice blog to read. First, you changed the site design to a less appealing, more difficult to read design.

Now, you post gigantic Nissan ads all over the place. Honestly I have more ad on my screen than content right now.

Come on guys, your ads must bring in premium $$. Do you really need ads that are this outradeous on your site?

krkeegan
