I bought a WD My Book Premium 500gb ext. hard drive. After a month of usage, it now does not show up on my computer's drive list. I put all my multimedia files on that single drive, which adds up to almost 200 gb.

I looked up WD website for support. They had a knowledgebase article on that same issue. The solution? "Return your drive and WD will send you a new one. what about the data? You will need to use a data recovery service to retrieve them."

The thing is, I have never done anything out of ordinary on that hard drive besides transfering files and now I suffer because of this unreliable product by WD.

plee9

Personally I've found the My Book external drives to be the most reliable and affordably priced external drives available. I've tried 9 different companies, and the only drives I've not had blow up on me yet are the My Book's. I can't attest for the firewire versions, but the USB2 ones do seem a tad slow. Wire speed on USB2 is 480Mb/sec, I'm only able to get about 112Mb/sec off of mine. Though I haven't tested the drives on other systems.

As far as network shares are concerned, there is a really great piece of software called FreeNAS, give it a try. Basically you build any system you want, install FreeNAS, done.

@elliotness
Your correct, mionet sucks, but you don't have to install it. Though WD certainly makes you feel like you have to. Just type in the IP address of the drive into a browser then login, default user is admin and pass is 123456.

@boske
Your not alone, a lot of people find it slow as well.

If you like pointless reporting on useless topics, you'll love gizmodo!

Elliotness... I bought a 320gb Mybook yesterday.
It's plug and play, no software required. The light isn't that bright, it's a soft glow. I wouldn't put it on a shelf but only because there isn't one that close to my computer. Also, it shuts off automatically when the computer is turned off, so unless you never turn off your PC, you shouldn't worry about it waking you up. Also, its formatted in FAT32, which means it would have no problem working on a Mac.

Ph30nix

One more thing...
It's supposedly shaped like a book, but ironically you can't display it with your books because the led-s surrounding the power button are REALLY bright!
I suggest you don't put this box in your bedroom or you'll wake up in the middle of the night, covered in cold sweat, thinking you have some extraterrestrial visitors in close proximity, hence the humming and bright blue light ;)
OR, if you happen to be a bit of nervous type who can't sleep in quiet and dark room, then it might be the perfect thing for you :)

elliotness

I made a mistake of buying a 500GB My Book World.
Before you start using it, you have to do some annoying online registration, create yourself the mionet account and some restarts later, you can start 'using' this thing...
In order to connect to it, you must have some sort of internet access, because you have to log on to mionet service every time you want to reconnect(after turning on or restarting computer) this drive to your computer. As far as I know, there's no way to simply map it as a network drive without signing in online.
AND it's Windows only!
Oh yeahh, WD charges extra for some backup and remote access software.
I guess you get what you pay for. Should have bought a regular usb mybook instead... Hoped to get a comfortable way to expand the hdd of my laptop and access different files in every room of my home. Got a humming white box instead :D

Speedwise it's perfectly possible to watch movies and listen to music over 54g wireless. Transfering a 700MB file from laptop to this drive over 54g takes about 9 minutes, so it's like an event on it's own :)

It has usb port, but only for the purpose of expanding the space. You can't use this port to connect it to your computer.

Want a NAS with different possibilities and ways to customize it? Don't want to constantly sign in to some web service? Want to use your NAS without broadband connection? Want to connect your external drive conviniently with usb-port?
Look elsewhere :)

elliotness

I have to say the 1TB NAS is the slowest drive I have ever encountered.

I truly hope they did some work on the interface electronics or software for this new model. With the absence of a host USB port, something has changed...

As it is only useful as a networked backup device, Mullingitover may have missed the point as most people will likely set it up RAID 1 and have a MARGINALLY more reliable data storage solution.

Boske

Making a single drive by combining two individual drives seems like the most insane design decision ever. "Ok guys: Let's take something that will hold a lot of important information, and let's make it HALF AS RELIABLE! It'll be awesome!"

mullingitover

@markgm: if there is no mention of RAID 5, then it is highly likely that it is 2 drives, and not 4.

schrosa

I just purchased two (2) of the Western Digital Passport drives for my OQO. Both of them died within 24 hours. Western Digital took more than 2 weeks to reply to my troubleshooting email.

Sorry Western Digital. I used to be a big supporter of yours. Due to your shoddy manufacturing as well as your lackluster support, I'm not buying any more Western Digital drives.
