Well my letter stated the new plans would start on the 31st of August. My monthly payments were on the 6th of each month, so I already had an issue with the fact that they were cheating me by a few days. Then, Bluckbuster decided to cut my service early (on the 25th) with no warning. So I was waiting for my next movies (figuring it would be my last set) when...NOTHING! I sent in a trouble email asking why my movies hadn't shipped. Their response:
-----
I've reviewed your account and see that you are waiting for 3 DVDs to be shipped. Here's an explanation of why this happened. If a movie at the top of your priority list is not available at a distribution center near you, the system automatically searches for the movie at other centers. If that movie falls outside of an acceptable shipping window, the system automatically searches for a movie lower in your queue that can get to you quicker. This process looks for "Available" titles 30-deep within your queue. We do this so your shipping times will be faster. On occasion, if your top selections are not available at a center near you and you have fewer than 30 "Available" movies in queue, a shipment may be skipped.

It appears this is exactly what's happening with your account. Based on the process I mentioned above, I would recommend keeping more than 30 "Available" titles in queue at all times. Once you take a few moments to do so, I'm certain you'll see something shipped by the end of the next business day after your queue meets our recommendations. Please let me know if there's anything else I can help with.

On the other hand, I reviewed your account and it shows that it was automatically canceled on August 25, 2007 due to recent changes in subscription. You just have to reactivate your subscription to your desired new plan. Reactivating your account is rather easy. Simply click the "Sign In" link at the top of [www.blockbuster.com], and log in using your previous e-mail address and password. If you have forgotten your password, you may reset it by clicking the link next to "Forgot your Password." If you've forgotten the e-mail address associated with your account, you may contact Customer Care at 1-866-692-2789 Monday through Friday 8:00AM through 6:00PM Central and we'll be happy to search for your account (we do this for your protection.) You may also use a different e-mail address to create a new membership.

Once logged in to your account, you may reactivate by clicking on the "My Account" link at the top of the page. Within the "Manage Account Settings" section on the left, click on the "Re-subscribe" link within the "Subscription Plan" section. You will be prompted with a list of our current membership plans to choose from. Click on the desired plan, then click the "I Authorize" button. You'll be asked to review the Terms and Conditions and click "I Authorize" again.

That's it! Your account will be reinstated immediately. Let me know if you have any additional questions.
----
So let me get this straight. You've increased your price, decreased the value, cut my service earlier than your announcement stated, cheated me out of 11 days of service (Aug. 25-Sept. 5), and you've audacity to tell me that the solution is to "reactivate" my account? NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!!

Anyway, I followed up with an email that went unanswered. I then followed with a phone call. The guy on the other end of the line offered me 2 free weeks if I reactivated. Right! Aren't those the 2 weeks they stole from me in the first place? I said no thanks and demanded a prorated refund. Problem solved. Blockbuster has lost yet another customer (not that they care).

taharka

Got the Blockbuster email 8/17 stating my plan will no longer be available. I'm accused of being a (too) "frequent renter" and have no option for grandfathership.

Nice customer support touch to state any e-coupons are also no longer available to me (bastards).

BB is cancelled, Netflix established, and I already have two movies from them.

Here's what Blockbuster said:
-----------------------------
Hello Tim,

Thanks for contacting BLOCKBUSTER Online Customer Care.

I'm sorry for the trouble it has caused, Tim. Also, new plans doesn't include e-coupons for current subscriptions online. Like all retail businesses, we must periodically review our pricing structure. In introducing a wider range of subscription plans, we considered a number of factors including the number of in-store exchanges on a given account. We're giving our most frequent renters like yourself the option of either continuing with unlimited in-store exchanges at a higher price point or moving to a plan where the number of in-store exchanges is fixed if you'd like to continue with the same rate.

We feel we are still delivering a great consumer value and encourage you to continue your membership by selecting one of the new plans we offer. You can find the details of what is available via "My Account" in the "Subscription Plan" area. Please remember that if you do not select one of the new plans we have to offer before your next regular billing date, we will not be automatically renewing your membership. Subscribers to the Total Access plan who want in-store rentals in excess of their monthly free exchange benefit can take advantage of the $1.99 discounted movie rental exchange offer. Thank you very much for your inquiry.

Always happy to help,

As a Blockbuster customer with what was the $5.99 plan, I have to say that the changes are not good at all. In our case, the price went up AND they lowered the value. Pay more, get less. I can't say that I'm a big fan.

Interesting reading other people's experiences so far. I am going to have to contact Blockbuster... Here is the email I got last night. Keep in mind, I am a long term customer.

---------------
Dear Greg,

We hope you're enjoying BLOCKBUSTER Total Access™!

There are some changes to our subscription plan lineup that introduce a new pricing structure and new plans which limit the number of in-store exchanges.

As a result, your current plan will no be longer be available at the current price.

(Unlimited Online DVDs up to 3 at a time plus unlimited in-store exchanges each month for $17.99)

We'd like to extend you a new plan that includes Unlimited Online DVDs 3 at a time plus up to 5 free* in-store exchanges for $17.99.

In addition, exclusively for BLOCKBUSTER Total Access customers, we have introduced in-store movie rentals for $1.99* per movie should you need more than the in-store exchanges included in your plan.

Your new plan will go into effect on your regular monthly billing date following August 31, 2007. If we don't hear from you by August 31, 2007, we will automatically move you to the new BLOCKBUSTER Total Access plan referenced below as "Your New Plan".

---------------

That's quite a bit different than what other commenters have ben told. Anyone else get an email recently?

I also might have to look back at Netflix (which I dropped a long time ago when Blockbuster started their online program).

greghughes

I guess I wrongfully assumed the enlightened folks folks at giz (friend of the consumerist) would know the Blockbuster tactics. Screw the other guy out of business and once the threat is gone, turn the screws on the customer. Anyone that shops at Blockbuster is getting what they deserve and screwing the rest of us in the process. These are the same folks that were sued for intentionally billing out for false late/lost charges. What does it take to stop going there people?

dkoemans

You can still get the unlimited in-store rentals, but now they are charging $7 more per tier. (click view all plans) I signed up for the 3 movies a while back so lucky for me it won't change. But I feel bad now for recommending it to my friends when they go and do a price hike like this. I replaced a huge cable bill and overflowing CD collection with Blockbuster Online and eMusic. I've been incredibly satisfied with both and recommend them to anyone.

Plan changes and cutbacks happen everywhere, just like when folks have a $20/mo cell phone plan with 1000 minutes from 1998. The changes suck, but I've been wondering how long the gravy train would last. It's usually best to jump aboard early when they're hungry for customers.

Transient

I work for blockbuster, and I agree that the change sucks. However, they don't throttle if you get too many online, unlike netflix. I have many customers who regularly get 6 or more movies mailed to them per week. Also, they only give you one coupon for a free game or movie rental every billing period under the old plans. The people who currently have a plan will always be able to keep the one they have at the price its at with all the free exchanges in the store they want. Its only the new members ( or people who change their plan ) the new plans apply to. There is also new "premium" plans that give you unlimited in-store exchanges, they just cost more.
Well I figured I would add to the original post. Since they are talking about only getting 5 exchanges a month. When you go to sign up and if you select the see all the plans, they are still offering the unlimited in-store exchanges along with the unlimited through the mail. It is in the premium total access, 3-out at a time $24.99, 2-out $21.99, 1-out 16.99... So yeah, not quite as good of a deal but at they are still offering the unlimited in store exchanges

marzeial

I switched over to Netflix after my local BB store would not accept the coupon for a game rental. EVER. Then the other issue I had was that sometimes even when the movie was returned at the store - the next movie would not leave the shipping facility until it was scanned in there. I'm not sure if it was throttling, it was very inconsistent.

Another plus, my Netflix facility is one mailing day away. Ship Monday, they process and ship a new one Tuesday - get it on Wednesday. Time it right and I can guarantee that we get the new release on Tuesday. So for the timing issue - Netflix is faster than the in the store BB trade - well, in a way - we overlapped subscriptions for a few weeks and ended up with an average of 2 more disks a week on Netflix.

WhatThe...

What drove me to Netflix from BB in the first place was that BB's brick and mortar stores **NEVER*** had anything in stock. I recall driving to three different BB stores (calling ahead doesn't work, you can't trust what they tell you) one night looking for Sideways.

So the Total Access plan, in whatever form, doesn't change anything --- they still won't have the titles I want in the store. Oh, and did I mention, they have closed more and more stores in the area where I live (Chicago), which makes more people go the remaining stores, which makes their inventory strained even more.

NetFlix isn't perfect. Far from it. I have about a 10% rate of DVDs with skipping/freezing problems. But they are the lesser of two evils for sure.

mwwilk

@Monty: I have the least expensive Netflix plan (one disk at a time) and they just cut my payment by a buck. Plus I could, if I wanted to, stream nine hours of movies every month for no additional cost. I've never tried that, since I don't like sitting here in front of my computer watching movies, but it might well appeal to a lot of people. Nine hours of movie streaming would mean four or five extra movies in a month depending on the run time.

infmom

Sticky, i was going to say the same thing. i don't care what kind of deal they are goign to try to entice me with, NetFlix doesn't rent out edited movies. That's one of the biggest reasons I'm with them. Plus the online streaming isn't even just towards the whole movie. Say you missed the last 2o minutes of something, you can catch it and use just that amount up. Brilliant. No thanks BB, i prefer the movies they way they were meant to be seen.

coolfelix

Yah, thats not even the throttling that most people talk about. They will even skip ones that are in a wait period and send the next one on the list that isn't.

The throttling that people talk about is mail delivery times. They deliver them usually 2 days after the order is sent through but when they start throttling them you will get 1 in 2 days the second one in 3 days and third 3-6 days later. As I stated above the confirmation emails even tell you to report it as not sent after 3 days of not getting it.

ehlaren82

I abuse this system to no end. I always try to get at least 6 rentals a week (3 online and 3 at the store). The best part is that thanks to their extra 1 week grace period you can end up stacking up 7-8 movies.

Or, if you're like me and can watch a movie or two every night, you can sometimes end up getting more like 12 movies in a week. It's great.

Of course if they change the system, I may end up having to cancel it. I don't think the 3 movies a week for $18 a month is worth it. Especially not with how poorly their queuing system works. I'd maybe consider switching back to their in store rental plan where you can just have 2 out from the store at all times for $20 a month.

Netflix has the 1 hour = $1 service download thing.

If you are on the 3 movie plan ($16.99) you get 17 hours of movie download.

Most videos are under two hours, so Netflix streaming total hours puts them ahead, unless you like to rip and burn or don't have high speed at home.

You're right about them both throttling, but I just canceled my BB account because of the 64 vids in my waiting list only four didn't have a wait period (And it was just stargate episodes and stuff like that).

Yes, it's less attractive than the first offering, but we've taken advantage of the free in-store exchange 3 times total in the past 6 months. I can live with a 5-exchange limit and even the $1.99 charge over 5 exchanges. The fact that when you return a movie in-store they immediately credit you and ship the next movie in your queue is something to keep in mind. Comparing apples to apples for new customers, Blockbuster Total Access is *still* a better value than NetFlix. And for current customers, we get the same deal we've had all along (unless we elect to change plans).

HockeyPhool

I checked my account and it says that my little 5.99 one movie at a time plan still gets unlimited exchanges, so this might only effect new members. I know that Blockbuster used to give Total Access members two coupons a week that could be used on games or movies and those people were grandfathered in to the new system (where new members only get one a month). I know some people still get those coupons, perhaps it will be the same with the unlimited exchanges for current Total Access Members.

surrealthemuse

I didn't even get an email about it. My plan in my account information still states 3 out a month with unlimited in store exchanges.

It is typical they are doing this to increase their profit margin. I am the same as BOBMAN1235. I don't watch T.V.; I would rather watch a 2hr movie every night. So I've been doing 6 movies every 7 days.

They do throttle the movies. FYI here is a little bit of info on that.

As soon as you turn them into the store it hits the system usually on that same day or early morning if it was already late. It auto emails you *telling* you to report it as not sent if you do not get it 3 days after the email was generated. It is humorous as their throttling that they do not tell you about pushes this limit constantly. One time I reported it after 4 days as missing. The next day I got both copies of the same movie and then exchanged all of them for 4 in store movies instead of just 3. This has happened 2 or 3 times now and generally after it happens they send me the next 3 ASAP with no throttling. I guess when they see it is costing them more when I get a crazy amount of in store exchanges then they reset the throttling in the mail.

I guarantee this has something to do with this change as well. This way they can throttle your movies or if they send you the wrong ones multiple times a month. You won't be able to get a free exchange in the store to compensate for them screwing up, as you most likely use them up pretty quickly.

ehlaren82

I do the unlimited 1 movie at a time with a monthly coupon deal (9.99 per month). I got an email from Blockbuster stating they were changing the plans, but since I was already a customer, I would not be affected by the changes. Not sure how long that will last, but it's something.

Saboth

Got an email on this from Blockbuster this morning. It does not affect existing customers, UNLESS you change your plan. So sounds like existing customers are grandfathered in. Quote:

We want to let you know about some changes to our BLOCKBUSTER Total Access™ subscription plans. This information is provided for your reference only - your subscription plan will not be affected by these changes.

Beginning July 26, 2007, there will be a price increase on your current unlimited plan. We will also begin to offer plans which limit the number of in-store exchanges available each month.

As a preferred customer, your plan will not change at this time. Please continue to enjoy your exclusive subscription plan, including no monthly limit on free* movie rentals or discounted game rentals when you exchange in-store, at today's price - far below the published rate available to new subscribers.

At any point, you can log in and review your current subscription plan or see all available plans. Keep in mind that if you want to change your subscription plan at any point after July 26, 2007, your new plan will be subject to prices and terms available at that time.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Bah! I had a solid 6 movies a week cycle going (3 by mail, 3 in-store)... 24 movies a month for 17.99 was pretty awesome, but it was definitely the maximum amount possible. With this change I'll still be able to get 17 movies a month for 17.99. A buck per rental is still damn good.

bobman1235

I believe NetFlix just lowered their pricing to $16.99 per month for 3 movies. Also, it is worth noting that NetFlix allows you to stream movies (one hour per buck per month or something, so potentially 8 movies per month) as well as having the three movies checked out at any one time. (However, the streaming movie selection is not incredible - there are enough titles there to find stuff you have not seen before.)

Of course, the primary reason I am with NetFlix is laziness. Being able to stream a movie to watch when all my flicks are in-transit works better for me than driving to the neighborhood Blockbuster. Plus, it fits better with my 'Eco-Nazi persona' (that is what my wife calls me, so I guess I can't argue it).

Monty

i still think it's better than Netflix.
I've had both and have the ability to get to a Blockbuster store in less than 10 minutes... 5 free exchanges is still really good.
In fact I would pay $18 JUST to get 5 rentals, i used to pay like $4.50 per movie.

It's all good, the previous plan was too good to be true anyways.

nakmario

Even though they reduced the in-store rentals to 5, it's still better than netflix. Netflix does the same online throttling. Blockbuster had to do this because obviously people were taking advantage of it and never paying for in-store movie rentals, something Blockbuster has to pay it's franchisers for.

Karl
