There are a lot of comments above this one, so if this was said already, sorry.

However, this is not a sad day for Mac "fanboys" at all. It just shows that Mac's can't be bothered to do menial chores like run a movie to advertise a product. They are better served selling themselves on a desk somewhere. I mean really, would you put a Mac Pro in a closet to run a video, or put Dell in that same closet? I know I would rather have the Mac Pro on display so that all can see.

Same with the Apple displays. Why waste a beautiful Apple Cinema display on a kiosk when it should be viewed by all running OS X.

Dave Metzener

I think I'm confused (and wow, lots of posts!). We are arguing about the relevancy of an iPhone display simply playing an iPhone advertisement? This says nothing aside from the fact that At&t bought Dells on which to play an Apple ad, it doesn't say that it was made on a Windows PC or that it's a shame because it's an iPhone from Apple - it's simply a video being played on a PC. Hmm, some people will do anything to disrespect....

travistotz

guys, seriously. who the hell cares what this display is running? Its just a fricken advertismenet. any OS could do this job; neither OS is better for this job. Why does every article I read nowadays that involves both apple and microsoft products spring up a ridiculously long train of arguments from windows and apply fanboys claiming that either windows or mac is superior and will take over the f-ckin world. Macs and Windows PCs are just computers. Some people prefer macs, and others prefer windows. Both have advantages and disadvanges. Most everyday tasks can be done on both systems. So PLEASE get over it and don't start a windows vs. mac war evertime there is a mac/pc article. Its pointless.

orangedoors

Whether it's Photoshopped or not, it could happen. As I stated above, those rigs are powered by a WinXP Dell. I have one in my store, I would know. :-) It could've been a reboot from a simple power failure as well. Ours did that the other day during a bad lightning storm. Although by the time I noticed it, it was too late to snap a pic. lol. As someone else made reference to, there's only 200 Apple stores. There's A LOT of AT&T stores. AT&T's bill for Macs to run those displays would've been a lot higher!

cingularpat

As far as I'm concerned, fanboys on both sides need to shut it. Why argue over which is better? I say the more the merrier. Remember how competition is the consumer's friend? As long as Apple and MS are competing in a given market, we can count on there being some innovation and both companies moving towards making pro-consumer decisions. The minute one side "wins" we're all gonna lose.

Wilco

I was at a seminar once with Frank Soltis (IBM honcho, "father of the AS400") and he said that Microsoft uses mostly IBM big iron (AS400s and mainframes) to run their business (at least the mission critical applications like accounting and inventory). Guess every manufacturer has its niche, and every dog its day. Good for MS.

OldSchoolGadgetLover

How is this story pro-PC and anti-Apple?

All I see is a crashed PC display at an AT&T store.

Why would AT&T be forced to run Mac hardware just because one of the phones they sell is made by Apple? It's naive to think that each video display source must match the handset's manufacturer.

Again, all this shows is that AT&T is subject to typical Windows crashes, and should consider using the more stable Macs, just like in all the Apple stores.

I have both a PC workstation and G5 at work and switch between the two constantly. I've been using both platforms (and others like Irix workstations, Amigas, and DEC Alphas) on and off for the past 15 years. For the past couple of years I've noticed that the Mac platform is considerably more stable and technologically sophisticated, while Windows is rather clunky, antiquated and crash-prone.

The Windows registry alone is the bane of my existence. Not to mention DLL problems, IRQ conflicts, difficulty fully uninstalling programs, and general instability. OS X on the other hand simply runs so much more smoothly, and is far easier to get deep into its guts via the Terminal and scripting. It's just better in every way.

This isn't the early-mid 90's when Mac's lost technological ground to Windows NT. Back then it was embarrassing to uses a Mac. Relatively speaking, OS 9 sucked.

But Apple has come back in a big way. From my experience, OS X and its associated hardware is technologically superior to Windows.

So again: an AT&T store display shows a crashed Windows XP display. How is this good for Microsoft?

meni

This is an AT&T store, not an Apple store. Their in-store product displays are contracted out by AT&T, not Apple. Apple only provides the video file. AT&T uses PC's to drive those displays. It's utterly naive to expect the store to switch their display hardware to match that of each the SKU's parent companies.

Of course, Apple stores use Macs with OS X to drive their displays.

However looking at this crashed PC, it would probably benefit AT&T to upgrade their in-store display PC's to more stable Macs.

@Tony C: Sorry, Tony. Apple is using Windows Mobile for their easypays. It's an existing hardware/software solution with secure wireless credit card authorization software . Although, if you've ever spent any time in an Apple store, you'll see the poor employees rebooting the things constantly because they lock up. They're by far the most unstable hardware in the store.

@Saad Rabia: Saad, it's not Apple using an MS product, it's AT&T. Apple does use M$ products, but you have no idea what point you're trying to make, if any.

@Mike from Boston: The original XBox360 development kit was a dual G5, since it was a readily available hardware platform that was similar to the hardware that eventually ended up in the X360. The Xenon processor is a PowerPC chip and closely related to the G5, so there was no way to build a dev kit on the x86 platform. Building on the G5 made great sense, saving M$ engineers the trouble of designing dev kit hardware. They concentrate on the real product development, while sw devs could start coding right away.

And to the Mac vs. PC debate: Yes, yes, Windows is the best operating system, McDonald's makes the best food in the world, and Michael Jackson's Thriller is the best musical composition ever. Ok... that last one may actually be true.

ludwigk

And to the guy who says they should install Linux: Good idea, but I think the fear is that the average store employee would have trouble installing the OS (unless it came preinstalled) and getting the presentation to get started. Of course, they could have just sent out a live CD that automatically runs the presentation, and if it screws up, reboot. But then you have to accommodate for a ton of hardware out there. All in all, it's a lot of work in many situations, while Windows XP is almost always preinstalled, and a double click of the presentation file is all that is needed.

Course, if it were me, I'd just take a $30 DVD player and loop a video. But that's just me.

TVarmy

How is this a jab at Apple? This photo is taken in an AT&T store, not an Apple store.

AT&T uses PC's in all their stores for retail display and business operations, irregardless of weather they are pushing Sony, Samsung, Nokia, Microsoft or Apple SKU's.

However they may want to consider upgrading to more stable Macs to drive their displays. It appears that this PC crashed.
Apple probably outsourced these store displays to a company that decided to use cheap PCs with Windows to run some Flash that would work basically the same on Macs with Mac OS X except probably slower (graphics do tend to run faster on PCs with Windows in my experience, especially with Java). There are about 200 Apple stores, so if they can save $500 per display while maintaining good and fast graphics, that's $100,000... not bad. Now, if these displays are also used in AT&T stores, that's a lot of money...

jmdecombe

@djdole: The only updates Linux needs to be rebooted for are Kernel updates. Those usually happen about every 6 months, and they are optional. So please don't compare the amount of times Linux needs to be rebooted to Windows. Most simple program installations and updates require a reboot in Windows, which happens very often. Then lets not forget the frequent crashes which require a hard reboot, which I'm sure your hard drive really loves doing. Aside from the kernel updates, there is no other reason you need to reboot in Ubuntu. I've had rare occasions where my Ubuntu system would have a program crash and I was able to close the problem program without rebooting.

gtr225

Since I work at an AT&T corporate store, I feel I can comment on this one. The iPhone rigs are powered by a standard issue Dell PC. Why? Well probably because that's where they buy almost all of their PCs and they probably got them on the cheap. Booting up sideways is a new feature? No. The HD Samsung monitor is mounted vertically to simulate the screen of the iPhone, hence why the boot screen comes up sideways. Did anyone honestly think that AT&T would cough up the dough to power these things with Macs!?? All it does is play a looping video, so there's no need. And for those who think it's Photoshopped, it's probably not. It looks grainy because it was likely taken by an AT&T employee with his camera phone. We all know how great those pictures look! So everyone just relax.

And honestly already, we all know the strengths and weaknesses of both platforms, so the bashing isn't necessary. We (and our computers) can all play nice together! :-)

cingularpat

What's the big deal? Judging from the blue walls, this is obviously taken from an AT&T Store. Apple wouldn't give them the computers to run them, they just threw a low end PC to run the videos. At the Apple Stores, however, they run the giant iPhones on Macbooks. AT&T is dealing with Apple for the iPhone, not the computers, so this makes perfect sense.

madmac625

For some reason my posts aren't going thru . . . BUT this is nothing more than a looping MPEG of iPhone video in portrait mode.

Tiger doesn't support portrait mode, but Leapord will. You can see it's nothing more than a LCD turned sideways to mimic the iphones dimensions.

I can't believe all these posts and noone thought about that.

SeanMiami77

HERE'S WHY THERE IS A WINDOWS LOGO THERE!!!

OSX currently doesn't support portrait display mode without specialty graphics card and as you can see, that LCD is in portrait mode. That's why the logo is sideways because the PC does nothing more than play a looping mpeg at the enlarged iPhone dimensions.

As a graphic artist I look forward to Leapord as it will support portrait mode and the new cinema displays will pivot 90 degrees as well.
Apple is too expensive, too tempting to steal, and everyone's going to think they just pulled a cheapie system from Fry's (or some other big box computer retailer) that's not worth the time to steal.

Does anyone here realize that Apple is, and always has been one of MS's biggest customers? I mean who designed the original software for the Apple II...? Bill Gates! And who has a specific development team to put together software for Apple in their company? Microsoft... Does Apple do the same thing...? You bet your ass they do! Has anyone ever used itunes on a "PC"? So yeah, i think that this display really shows that they really really hate each other and I'd be willing to bet that everyone at Apple is thoroughly pissed off that they would ever use anything other than a macpro with a 30" Apple display...NOT!

xthemusicmanx

Actually guys . . . I think the REAL REASON behind this madness is that right now apple, for some strange reason doesn't have portrait display support and as you can see the oversized iPhone display is merely a LCD rotated 90 degrees.

I hear the new cinema displays will have a 90 degree pivot and Leopard will be able to run everything portrait.

All of you are ignorant.

I think it is pretty clear that this photo comes from an AT&T store. Check the computers they use and have been using everyday for years. Windows running one of their displays means nothing. I don't get what the big deal is.

Whether or not it was rebooting after a crash is negligable. Windows crashes more than OSX, nothing new. Who cares. Windows guys will say that they have a huge market share, and Mac guys will say their program is better.

Get over it.

xilience

You can clearly see the machines running the display in my local Apple store and they're G5's. Since this is clearly in a Best Buy or some other non Apple store my guess is they just use what is cheap and what the staff is more familiar with. Hell they might even force the store to supply the machines themselves. Ironic yes, but not surprising.
