1) Apple DID NOT tell anyone to pull those slim keyboard shots. keyboard = REAL.

2) Apple DID tell people to pull Asteroid stories/pictures. Asteriod = NOT REAL.

so i conclude that Apple Legal telling someone to pull an image or story means that it is NOT a real product.

As for proportions, early shots can be deceptive. Remember how people were complaining that the iPhone would be too chunky to be a usable phone?

As for it being an in-between device, I find that doubtful for the simple reason that Apple is wary of having too many SKUs. It's part of the reason why they got rid of the mini to make way for the nano. If this isn't a nano, it's most certainly a replacement for it.

Any new nano *can't* be wider than the current nano. If anything, this looks like a model positioned between the shuffle and the nano or between the nano and the video, depending on the scale of the thing. Either of those could work - if it's a little bigger than it appears to be, it could be useful for occasional video-watching for those who think the current 5G is too big. If it's smaller than it appears to be, it would make a nice "Shuffle with a screen" model. But as a replacement for the nano, no thanks.

On top of that, if they want us to buy a 'nano' with a bigger screen, they probably think we'll be watching video, right? On a device with 8GB max, which it has to share between MP3's and video? I don't think so. They'll have to work some high capacity flash memory trick in order to make a nano-sized player a decent video playback evice. And I haven't even mentioned the size of the screen, which blows for video just like the current 'iPod with video'.

The more I think of it, this is an in-between device, between the iPod nano and the full size widescreen video iPod (see [9to5mac.com]).

If it's the same width as the iPod nano, but shorter, you're faced with two problems.

First, the screen would be too small to view videos, completely defeating the point of a widescreen display.

Second, the click wheel would be scaled down to the point that it would no longer be usable, if you consider just how much space there is around it in the photos.

That's not to say it might not be a bit shorter than the current-gen nano. After all, if you build wide, you've got enough room to not have to build tall. Nevertheless, there's no way that this would be the same width as the current-gen iPod nano.

Having said that, I think the look of the 'new nano' that's presented here is ugly as hell. The proportions are plain wrong because by making it more square than rectangular, there is no streamline. It's just a big blob that looks kinda like a stone, despite the fact that it's probably pretty thin. The 1st and 2nd generation iPod nano's were the opposite, they were really narrow and stretched to make it obvious that this is one tiny, thin, light weight music player. The design for this one screams "I weigh more than a brick and won't fit in your pocket!". Which brings me to the second point, the shape won't fit in a pocket as well as the older nano's, despite the fact that Apple kinda likes the "XXXX songs in your pocket" advertisements. Remember when the 1st gen was announced? Steve pulled it out of the little money pocket of his jeans. I don't see this one fit in the big pocket, so I definetely dont see it as a new nano. Nano's are, as someone before me mentioned, for those who are cool with carrying a smaller part of their music collection with them and no need for real video's of photo's.
It could be a next gen iPod, but I'm pretty sure they make a mistake if they try and make this the next gen nano. It may be a new in between model, between the widescreen video iPod and the current nano.

ranting aside, this is a mistake for a nano. i hope to god that this is the new video. it would look good for a video, however it is FAR from small, sleek, and purty like a nano. you buy a nano because you don't give a shit about video, you don't have more than 4 gigs of music (i assume most people), you are super-chic, or you got stuck with it because your parents wouldn't let you pay the extra 50 note required for the video *ahem*.

this thing looks better than the video but it is ugly compared to the nano

But having seen it more and more it doesn't look bad. It definitely grew on me and the rounder shape is fairly pleasing to the eye in black.

I don't think this is the actual design (or even close), but I wouldn't be too disappointed if it turns out to be.

Let's just talk about how good they (used to) look and forget about them being overpriced, lacking features found on cheaper alternatives, requiring proprietary cables and software, having sub-par audio quality, poor firmware that many owners feel a need to replace, shitty file support (some of us enjoy the quality that can be had via OGG or FLAC and it doesn't require a golden ear), no mass storage and hardware issues that have lead to class action lawsuits.

Just joshin', iPods are dope.
