Take a look at [www.apple.com] According to this, the 8GB nano holds 2,000 songs or 7,000 photos. Yet the 8GB touch holds only 1,750 songs or up to 10,000 photos. Now, I know the OS on the touch is going to suck down more of that 8GB than the nano's, but why the heck are they saying that the touch holds less music and more photos than the nano of the same size?

When someone at school passed along the news that the new iPod was indeed a touch screen (with WiFi internet no less!), I actually stood up and started victory dancing. (Did I mention this happened during an assembly?) Luckily not many people noticed.

When I got home I sat down at the computer credit card in hand to see the details and buy buy buy. Then I saw the maximum capacity is 16GB. I have 55GB of music alone. At this point, a little piece of my soul died. Looks like I'll have to wait a year or two on this one, *sigh*.

Either way, this thing tanks: 605 has much bigger HDs, is expandable, and is cheaper (at least I am pretty sure that the 30GB 605 is cheaper than a 16GB Touche'). I guess accelerometers are really expensive or something.

If you are the type that pays for substance, then the 605 is where's it's at. If you are the type that pays for style, then don't you already own one of them itelePhones anyways?

I guess this is more proof that Apple has really "made it" like Microsoft has, because they are starting to consistently disappoint their audience. (Although, to be fair, they are fishing for a new audience with the itelePhone that I am just not a part of, so I don't really consider it much in this statement. I am self-centered.)

BTW, I think the 605 or maybe the 704 also have options for 160GB, so the classic isn't really breaking any ground either. Meh.

At the time of writing, my iTunes library is home to 3,055 songs which add up to a grand total of 16.33 GB. If I bring my iPod, I want it with me. Period. The day I have to pick-and-choose between my songs is the day I get something with more space. I'm just not going to do it. My music, to me, is a necessity, and what I might be in the mood for at any given time changes so rapidly that there's no way in hell I'd be able to weed out songs without eventually being without something I want to listen to.

@nutbastard: "You need higher standards for music"? What the hell are you on? Just because I have a sizable music library means that I listen to bad music? Try again. There are millions and millions of songs out there. It's not hard at all to scrape up a collection that'll exceed this iPod's space limits easily if you're looking for a wide range of music.

I can't even put into words how pissed I am at this. One of the things that Apple has always needed to learn is that it's not all about the form factor, and this shows their lack of knowledge in that area perfectly.

For me it's the built in wireless that's the killer app; the entertainment aspect is much less important (I mostly listen to music on vinyl - I have no use for a soundtrack to my life blaring in my ear). But the 16GB would be very useful for carrying most utilities I need for my consulting.

That interface is also a killer app though. It's wonderful to see Apple suddenly make the Zune monstrosity obsolete. And this should send a major message to M$: Your WiFi implementation in the Zune was beyond lame to the point of brain damage.

I can understand the argument for flash in a phone. Phones are more apt to be abused (though not with what Apple's charging for them!), so flash is a wiser choice as it's less prone to failure due to vibration.

I don't see any argument against a hard drive in the Touch. It would be a little thicker, but that's about it. Any loss in battery capacity would most likely be negligible at worst - see the specs for the Classic. Speaking of the Classic, you get 10x the capacity for %50 less than the touch! That new display is sexy, but not that sexy.

The people reading this blog are at the extreme end of the spectrum, with large music libraries because they're more in tune with technology. The size isn't massive. The storage options they give are mediocre, especially with it being designed with a screen that's excellent for viewing videos. As someone who's biggest iPod is a second gen Mini, I'm fairly impressed with the Touch. Heck I'm impressed with the new Video Nano. I am not one of those people who need a month's worth of music, literally at my fingertips at any given time.

I've always thought as long as the player can hold more music than it can play in one battery charge, it's great!

All it is is the iPhone without the GSM receiver. They then used that space to add WiFi and some more memory.

I would personally rather have it a little thicker and come with at least 30GBs.

It's better to just buy the iPhone which is probably what they're aiming for.

Particularly not when you consider that you need to sign up for a 2-year contract.

Since we were given iPhones at work I was a little worried that I would be too tempted to get the new iPod with the touchscreen as well, but at only 16gig I'm not feeling it. Either put in at least 32gigs or add an SDHC slot. 16gigs is not nearly enough for a video machine. I'm sure it will sell really well, and after using the iPhone I can say that the interface is fantastic, but I think that they may have deliberately kept the memory spec low to avoid hurting the iPhone.
