I'm not rich or poor. The difference between me and the next guy is that I would rather spend my money on an iPhone than on something else. Wouldn't anyone be annoyed that a product they spent a significant amount of money on was being sold 2 months later at 2/3 the price?

Here's what it comes down to, you paid your money, you were excited, the price dropped. End of story, there's no evil master plan, I'm an apple hater and notn even I am willing to say this is proof iphone sales suck. Price drops like this, with no new product in the pipe, are a result of very good sales bringing down the production price per unit. The iphone has been successfull in it's niche if you believe what's being said. They killed the smartphone market (Which was small at best) and have been dipping into the exploratory cell phone buy and new cell phone buyer markets. It's a great device, shitty phone, but great device.

Those of you who bought the iphone first, i don't really feel for you, i mean it sucks, but it was your choice. There were reviews, artciles, people everywhere saying "I won't be one of the first because there's nothing spectacular about it". I know four people who bought iphones, and the extent of their use is to show it to me, call it the jesus phone, and call me a hater when i say I don't care if they have it or not. It was bragging rights, and you paid 200 extra for it.

I don't think this is a bad move by apple, they'll push out more and more iphones wiht the price drops. The touch won't affect iphone sales I don't think. Tehre are plenty of people who cannot afford a new phone at 600 or even 400 dollars. But they might be able to justify dumping their old beatup mp3 player for the touch. I even have to admit I'm VERY tempted to pick up a touch, though I dno't think I will. I know i'll love the touchscreen features, for all of a week before it loses it's wow factor for me. I bought a samsung q1 and rarely if ever use the touch features.

JRIGA: Resale value is not inherent in a device, it's not apples fault you are a fanboy and think they're the greatest things since sliced bread. Sure, you can resell a mac to someone for 80% of the original value a year later. You can sell it to a mac fan. Not to a struggling student desperate to buy a computer. They dont' keep their value because they're great machines. They keep their value because apple forces their value to stay exactly where it is. If you want last years mac, you buy it from someone who has one and is looking to upgrade... i.e. pay for 80% of their new machine by suckering someone else into their old machine. And that sucker has no choice, because he can't very well go find a discount model on sale at a store. Because apple has set their prices solidly. Jobs is brilliant, he's figured out exactly how to get his addicts to keep doling out the cash for limited improvements.

I've played with macs, pc's, amigas... I've owned em all.. a machine is a machine is a machine is a machine... the box you buy does not suddently impart special abilities on you to complete you work. It's just a tool, you use it with the skills you have. Giving a mac to an idiot is not suddenly goign to give him the ability to figure out quantum equations, create spectacular 3d and special effects. It's just a tool... stop falling in love with your tools folks...

For Apple, this decision is just showing that Steve Jobs does not care that you are loyal. He does not care about the customer.
Lesson learned, Loyalty does not paid nor recognized by Apple.

I am in for a class action against Apple for unfair business practices against its loyal customer based. This will set precedent to other corporattion not to take its customer base for granted.

To Whom It May Concern:

I just wanted to say how deeply unsatisfied I am with the new changes revolving around the iPhone. As the worst mistake Apple has ever made, you have lost thousands if not millions of customers who feel the same way as I.

I am writing to you because I always have had faith in Apple. Being one of the only companies that the customer can count on as friendly, reliable and always thinking of the consumer, I was shocked when I heard about the price change of $200 on the more expensive version of the brilliant iPhone.

As a long time Apple customer whom I recommend as the main source of products for the reasons mentioned above on various occasions when discussing electronics such as the Mac series, iPod series and the latest iPhone.

I love my iPhone deeply and would not give it away for anything except my friends and family. It is another marvelous idea created by Apple, and as you are so bright of a company, I am still shocked that you would lower the price of the expensive model lower than the original, lower level model.

In case you have not analyzed this decision fully, I would like to do so. The first million or so of the customers who bought your new product with knowledge of bugs and bumps along the way are to be defined as your most, "loyal and dedicated customers." They are the ones who spent the $550 or $650 knowing that they were the "beta" testers and knowing that the product's pricing would go down, EVENTULLY. Not a single one of those customers could have anticipated that the price would drop more than any other Apple product ($200) within the first two months of the product release.

As happy as I am for the customers who now have a chance to buy the cheaper and better version of the iPhone, what about all of the customers that anxiously waited for hours in front of your stores on the product release date for the iPhone? To put it in lame terms which I thought I would never associate on a company such as Apple but more so on a company such as Microsoft, you used us to get the word out about how great the phone was and then you used us and stole that $200 right out of our pockets.

As you must know, the other consumers like myself who were used by your company, are as outraged as I am. Those customers as I mentioned before are your most loyal customers. Because of your recent act, you have lost over %50 of them and I could make a bet that most of that percetage, used Macs as well.

I am writing to you not to complain, but to help you analyze the mistake you have made and to try and help you realize this mistake and give something back to the beta and loyal customers you used.

After calling up 1800-MYIPHONE and 1800-MYAPPLE, the associate who I was finally connected to after 45 minutes of waiting, told me that I would have to contact the Apple Retail Store I bought my phone from. Once I contacted the Walt Whitman Apple Store, I was told that only the customers who had recently bought the phone in the last 14 days were to be issued a refund. They offered me nothing except for a poor excuse of an apology.

The thousands of customers like me are asking you to help us by giving back something you took from us, unfairly. A refund of $150 or more or even a mere store credit would ease our pain and would keep a majority of the customers I guarantee you have lost, including myself.

Thank you for your time and I hope that you can find it in your hearts to help your most loyal customers who you stole from.

My iPhone is special to me just because I had to save up to buy it and well I'm glad I did. I got to get my hands on it before anyone else at my school! I had bragging rights, and really a phone is just a phone when you look at it. But the iPhone has definitely revolutionized the "smartphone".

Besides my iPhone, yes the 4GB model got me an offer of over $800 USD at AnimeFest this year because the voice actor of Axel from KH2(Kingdom Hearts 2), Quinton Flynn, signed it. So If ya look at it, If I can sell this iPhone on eBay I could go out and buy 2 8GB Models If I wanted to <3.

If you are not satisfied with your Apple purchase of a product, please call 1-800-676-2775 for a Return Material Authorization (RMA) request within 14 calendar days of the receipt of the product.

Online purchases can be returned online ... but it might be worthwhile to call the RMA number above and try to get Apple Store credit for the difference, rather than having to suffer the shipping expense and/or 10% restocking fee on any opened hardware.

Hope this is useful for at least some of the early adopters out there!

Everyone relax. I bought my iPhone 26 days ago and I love it & Apple. I Knew they would do right by me so I just gave them a call.

After holding about 15 mins for a rep, I politely and calmly asked if I could squeak into the price match...she said no. I pleasantly said please and noted what a faithful Apple customer I am...followed by 1 more heartfelt please. She said hold on 1 sec. She returned 2 mintues later after speaking with a supervisor and said she could give me the $200 price match!

I thanked her profusely, got my confirmation #, and that's that.

Call Apple, theyy will take care of the early adopters...you just have to be a bit proactive.

BTW, I LOVE MY iPHONE!

They did not come out with a new model at all. Imagine buying a brand new BMW M3, and then two months later they drop the price of the car for $20K wouldn't you feel a little screwed?

I called Apple and they said that it was between me and the Apple store that I bought the phone from. I called the Apple store spoke with a manager and he said he'll make the adjustment for me if I come in today. I am only 14 days outside the return window. If he said no I would have disputed the charge with American Express.

Apple should be cautious... All the early adopters were their best customers which they now may have lost if they don't find a way to make it right.

And finally, please build any PC system you choose with MATCHING specs to any Mac you choose and you will see, as most people do now, that Macs are about the same cost (or very close to) the PC counterpart. ESPECIALLY once you upgrade to Vista (which is necessary when comparing Macs to PCs - latest OS of both). No cheating now. When done... you will have an ugly plastic loud Windoze machine that needs 2 hours of 'cleaning out' right from the factory vs. a solid metal silent Mac that just works.

Again, you won't fully understand this post - but it's to be expected.

Here is why I'm pissed on the price drop:
I was duped. Plain and simple. Steve SOLD me hook, line, and sinker back in Jan. that the iPhone was the end-all device. And that it was a STEAL at $600! I did the math, I make decent money, and I love Apple so the purchase made sense to me - and to my wife. We sat in line for 9 hours and it was genuinely a party, a worthwhile experience.

I am NOT angry at the $200 price drop. I'm angry that Apple has decided NOT to keep the VALUE in the iphone. Because as a savvy consumer I understand the difference between buying something of value, and something that is overpriced. I bought the iPhone because I was sold, at $600, on the VALUE. Now today I am finding that I was wrong - it was NOT worth $600 - it was worth $400, perhaps even less. Thus, it was overpriced and I was over-sold.

I am such an Apple fan, and part of that comes from their products having VALUE over and above what the market is used to. Some of you making comments are Windoze fans - and you are genuinely used to your products shipping with zero value and holding zero value... but for me, I get a new Mac EVERY YEAR - and the cost to me is about $250/yr to do so. I sell the old, and buy the new. The products keep amazing value! They don't go on sale, or go through the price drops the rest of the market is subject to - Apple has a brand where value is TOP priority. Thus, when you buy a $2000 iMac, a year later it's STILL an $1800 machine!

In this case though... my product has been devalued by 1/3 and THAT is what I don't appreciate. Normal depreciation is expected for anything - but this drastic reduction in this short time period is not only shitty, but it's downright DAMAGING to Apple's brand - I will definitely not have the same blinders on during "The Steve's" next keynote.

As a side note, the store Manager was unable to do anything for the 2 iPhones I bought (price-wise) and they have not been given an idea of what to say to a customer or how to handle this from Apple.

So, what does that mean?

Well, that looks like two things to me. First: Somebody is trying to clean up inventory. Fast.
Second: The 4GB model always seemed like more of an afterthought to me. Like they had still all those 4 gig modules lying around and wanted to get rid of them.

So, prepare for new iPhones before x-mas, I'd say. You heard it here first;-) Unless some of the other 155 commenters that came before (and I was too bloody lazy to read) mentioned it....

I suspect they will be introducing a 16 GB iPhone soon, which will have a $500 price tag, and the 8 GB will take the lower status. So it's not entirely a $200 price-drop, but also the eventual introduction of a new product.

I also think Apple didn't want to drive away potential iPhone buyers (they will still make more money from these) away by having the iPods substantially lower cost. The main reason I can see right now to go with the iPod is if you absolutely don't want to use AT&T as a company. Which I know includes plenty of people.

I had a hunch that CNET article was suspicious.
If the demand remained high like we have seen with the Nintendo Wii, then the price would not have been dropped today, let alone by so much. Bottom line: it wasn't selling and Apple needed to do this now to help their 3Q results. That's when shareholders expect to hear an update figure for iPhone sales.

If Jobs is lucky, he will sell enough in the next 25 days so that the public will never really know how much of a failure the iPhone has been (in terms of sales expectations) thus far ... but he doesn't deserve it for ripping off his best supporters.
