Allow me to help this make sense for you folks....
Let's just say that the margin on the iPhone at introduction was $300.
That means for every iphone you got suckered into, apple made $300.
Now, they decide to drop the price because the GP thought it was too expensive and because there are plenty of phones out there that do more, albeit without the fancy touch screen (see blackberry).
Apple drops the price $200 to make it more palatable and drops their profit to $100 an iphone.
Apple freaks that bought it early and paid top dollar cry to the heavens. Apple decides to make nice and give the customers something they think will make them happy - a $100 store credit.
Let's just say that you take that store credit and get a new $199 ipod. The profit on the ipod for apple cannot be more than $50.
Let's look at the math:
Original profit: $300
Store credit: $100
New profit: $200
Cost of ipod: $199
Profit on ipod: $50
Cost of ipod after store credit: $99
Net loss on revenue: $100
Total profit after taking new purchase into consideration: $300-100-50- 150.
They just cut their profit margin they earned on you, the customer, from $ $300 to $150 but they increased revenue and made a fan.
So yeah, it's a net gain. However, consider the way real life works and you would likely end up buying the new ipod anyway, meaning they could have made:
$300 on the iphone
$50 on the ipod
$350. So instead of earning $350, they now earn $150. This is not a good thing for apple.
Be thankful you got anything.

But as a retail worker, if you buy something day one you always always get fucked on price and features. Cellphones are a guaranteed item for the price to drop within the first year, be discontinued, or they give you money when you get one.

Steve Jobs said it, "If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon."

1) It certainly adds to the satisfaction/confidence level of their devoted customers.

3) Addresses the whole price-cut issue with people who buy their products early-- who are, more than likely key buyers, since Apple's main income is from repeat customers.

The Apple guy went in the back for a minute, came out, and said it was fine -- and if I wanted the $100 difference back on the card or as store credit.

finally, jobs limits the rebate to "unsubsidized" and otherwised non-rebated iphones...hmmmm. how many att phones were unsubsidized?

bottomline: class action suit for att customers...apple waited 2 months because att customers had 30 days to return and my guess is that 50-70 percent of all sales are excluded by this mechanism.

but hey, maybe someone "in the media" will ask some legitimate questions and make some consistent comparisons.

Yeah. What you are neglecting to see here is that you likely would have bought the new iPod anyway.

They are still netting a $100 loss. It doesn't matter that it encourages you to purchase a new ipod with the credit.
Basic business 101.
Sure, it's great that they incentivized you to buy a new ipod. But would you have eventually bought one at full price? Probably.
Instead, the shareholders get to lose $100. this is not how companies make money.
I'd wager that the $100 makes their profit on the unit close to zero, or worse brings it negative. meaning that this decision STILL cost apple money. Yeah, they may have gotten a little revenue, but their margins are now forever changed, and all because you HAD to have the iPhone right away.
Why do you think you are making them any money on the deal?
They lose $100, no matter what you buy with your credit. Revenue is great, but profit pays the shareholders.

We had a lot of upset customers call in last night because they felt bamboozled. As has been mentioned, it was not necessary for Apple to do this, but it is definitely a nice gesture.
For those wondering what "not receiving a rebate or any other consideration" meant: Apple is offering a $200 price protection if you RECENTLY purchased an iPhone. Actually, the same goes for the iPods because those prices dropped, as well. So, that statement clarifies you cannot get the $200 (or other amount) price protection AND get this $100 "coupon" on top of it. (It is essentially a coupon.)
I like the idea one commenter had about purchasing a new Red iPod nano to, at least, donate some of that money back to a good cause. Being that I have an iPhone and a shuffle, though, I might save it for Leopard or I can buy a Red as a gift! :D

Store credit is just a step up from rebates. Many will not use it. Many more will spend more than the 100.00. 100.00 of their product will cost them far less than 100.00. I could say, "These guys are good.", in admiration of a well executed plan. Early adopters shouldn't be rewarded just because apple decided their overpriced, overhyped phone has a price adjustment.

As the letter says, anyone who buys any piece of technology should expect this sort of this (perhaps not to this extent, but that is a matter of degree, and not kind).

I think this needs to be tagged as "Above and Beyond." Apple has such incredible customer loyalty and market power in this area that they easily could have gotten away with not doing this.

Sure, it's store credit -- so Apple isn't *really* giving you $100. However, considering that the new release of OS X is coming out soon, it's all the same to me. Or maybe it goes towards something else (I wonder if it will work on the iTunes store..?)

The point is, as an early adopter, it makes me happy. I can easily live with the $100 drop (even if it *is* only 2 months after). Yes, technology is a bumpy road, but it sets a bad precedent for Apple to decrease the price so soon. I think if it had been 6 months, very few people would be complaining.

Will I think twice before getting another Apple product early? Given how they responded with this, I'm more likely to be okay being an early adopter. I think if Apple hadn't done this, they would've suffered some backlash for their next future release.

It could get you an iPod Shuffle, and Apple store credit works in iTunes too, I believe. If it does work in iTunes, I will buy 101 songs. If not, then I'll get a Product Red Shuffle, and fight AIDS with my technically free $100. Remember, Jobs didnt have to do this. All of us early adapters KNEW without a doubt there would be a price drop. It AlWAYS happens with nearly EVERY product ever released from anyone, and the people who paid full price never got free credit for whining.
