The main reason to believe this is fake is the lack of fine-print.

As soon as they list calling plans they have to add fine-print... and LOADS of it.

I live in Germany and even the slimmest skyscraper format magazine ads for cellphones/plans include at least 2 inches worth of micro-text. Which obviously would have been too much of a hassle to add to this shop.

Blue_Six

@Buford T. Justice: You sure? I thought that they didn't do 3G for America because it would be too much of a drain on battery life. Add 3G *and* network-linked RFID (FeliCa) and an always-on network link (for downloading content to read offline, called S!Cast by Softbank and iChannel by DoCoMo) like all the high-end Japanese phones have, and the battery life will be crap.

If they have to they'd probably be less dissatisfied with DoCoMo's branding- iMode, iAppli, iChannel, etc- it'd fit in just fine.

jamar0303

They will not release the iPhone as is into Japan. I'll stipulate that it will have little to no carrier branding.

Yet the phone WILL have additional functionality to make it suitable for the Japanese market. Visual voicemail is a function on the present iPhone that's carrier dependent. Why wouldn't Apple extend that concept to make the device more suitable for Japan?

Europe will get the iPhone ahead of Japan. It just won't be 3G. As for phone tarrifs over there, voice is MUCH more expensive due to the telecoms structure there. Everything is metered. Incoming mobile calls are free only because the person calling pays whatever the network wants to charge! That's why mobile to mobile calls inter-network tend to cost a fortune. The landline network also charges per-minute... why do you think texting was so much more popular in Europe than here for so long?

Buford T. Justice

@Buford T. Justice: The iPhone is developed by Apple. They won't let carriers like Softbank or DoCoMo add their proprietary Yahoo Keitai or i-mode into the phone if they sell there. Apple wants full control over the iPhone experience, and that means keeping it mostly the same as it is in America except for essentials like the addition of 3G WCDMA/HSDPA. And Europe will probably get it before Japan, for starters.

I'm curious about one thing, though- does T-Mobile Germany not use the same style as T-Mobile USA? Then again, I can see why- I'm not really fond of the US style.

Another thing- 50Euro/month for 200 voice minutes? And Americans complain that they get screwed.

jamar0303

@BUFORD T. JUSTICE
you wrote: They also haven't done L, XL, XXL plans...
I say: Theyre doing it, my current contract is T-Mobile Max with Web'n'Walk XXL, before I had Relax 100 XL with T-Mobile Data S...

I don't think this is legit because of the screwed photoshop on this one, T-mobile has been a corporate design "nazi" for everything they have from shops to online and everything else. Thats not even anything near the actual t-mobile font.

But even more interestingly is below the pricetag for the calling plans "Bis zum 12.12 im Telekom-Vorteil" which translates to "Until 12.12. as Telekom-rebate" which makes it even more fake, because for calling plans we have the "Regulierungsbehörde" (Agency for Regulating Transmissions on every band from CB to Phones) who will have to allow such things as "flatrates" and they only allow it until the first of the month, not in the middle. I call BS on this one.

Did anyone notice that the filename is "ipad.jpg"?
And there a more errors like the "Z.B." correct German would be "z.B." The necessary legal texts are completely missing, the logo must be aligned left, the basecolor has to much yellow in it (23% to much) and for it to be a print-ad it would have to be converted from cmyk to rgb which didn't happen. The top-claim is not centered. And "In alle Handynetze..." (to all carriers) cellphone plans are not allowed in germany either.

Snipery

fake fake fake. As someone noted, the spacing of the dots surrounding the TMobil logo is woofed compared to the branding on the Tmobil.de site.

And the whimsical jaunty angle that they use to display the price boxes is a different jaunty angle than TMobil uses. This angle does not change throughout their branding, and the real one is jauntier!

I have to disagree, you can get a Good phone free with a plan here, but if you want a Great New phone you are going to pay a lot of cash together with the plan. I dont know how it is in Germany but in Denmark the sales tax plus the fact that phone companies cant bind a customer for more than 6 months will probably mean that the iPhone will be very expensive and will come with a plan

Oasx

Remember though - if us Europeans don't get a 3G iPhone, the internet capabilities outside of WiFi would be pointless really. You think EDGE is slow? We've not even got that...
------------------

Äh, where do you live in Europe? I'm living in Germany and we got all that lovely stuff:
- UMTS
- GSM/GPRS
- EDGE
- HSDPA
- HSUPA
...

Great that I did NOT import an iphone from the US ;-)

well, the 3.6 MBps looks quite legit, but don't mistake that with the actual numbers you will get. I am in Portugal on 3.6 HSPDA, and download speeds are not anywhere near 3.6, let alone upload. So WiFi still kicks 3G's arse. Some providers here actually advertise with 7.2 max. That might be interesting...

yogibimbi

All of this blathering aside (real or fake): I just got back from 3 weeks of traveling in Portugal and Italy. Basically, anytime I used my iPhone, it drew a crowd. They want it so bad, they were trying to trade their Nokias for it. They would even call their friends to say they saw one in person. When I said what I paid for it, plus the monthly charges, they didn't seemed fazed. Maybe because the Euro is kicking the dollar's ass? Dunno. Anyway, it will sell over there like crazy. They seem more excited about it than Americans did before it came out here. Also, in case anyone was wondering, it worked great over there. Every feature worked, and it saved my ass on many occasions, especially with google maps in cabs or when I rented a car in Italy.

johnnyabnormal

The iPhone name might be tied up in Germany. I picked up a super-cheap Skype USB handset that was branded as an "iPhone;" manufactured by Sunnyline, a (now dead?) company out of Germany.

The manual for the phone gave sunnyline.net as the URL; just a 404 there now.

Anyway, I'd also suspect that the ad was a fake. But my $10 iPhone is the real deal!

Even if this is fake, it seems more and more likely that the product being described (16GB iPhone with 3G) is inevitable.... it would explain why there is a 16GB iPod Touch but a similar 16GB iPhone has not yet been announced (if all Apple was going to do was increase the capacity, they probably could have unveiled an updated iPhone at the same time..... but if they're combining that with 3G, it makes more sense). I would wonder though if they would make 3G a differentiator though (i.e. keep the 8GB iPhone at $399 with EDGE, and have a 16GB 3G iPhone at $599).

Zadillo

Using "ipod" in the ad is probably just for product recognition (maybe 'iphone' didn't get as much media hype in Germany as it did here in the states - however, all the world knows the 'ipod' by now). Of COURSE it will be 3G in Europe, as that's what they use over there (we can envy all we want, but they have a more robust cellular system over there, and have led us for years in per capita cell phone usage stats, from what I've heard - correct me if I'm wrong please). I'll be over there from mid November, and if I have the chance to check this out (with pics of course :^) I'll let y'all know.

banmojo

Just having photoshop in the metadata doesn't mean an image is fake. Photoshop is commonly used to resize and optimize images to be placed on a web site... just like this one.

Photoshop can be used to alter photos, but don't make the mistake of thinking that it doesn't have other legitimate uses including allowing T-Mobile designers to create real ads.

Do you really think all the millions of photoshop users spend all their time creating fake apple products?

GenericWhiteGuy

yea im not sure about the pricing, thats crazy... with contracts euro peeps get much nicer phones for much cheaper... I have yet to see an n95 over here in the US, but even kids in the dorms when I was in Germany had an n95 this summer, came with their cell plan. Although I had to show a guy how to get the maps to work w/o a data plan...

Anyway I would like to point out the main description of the phone saying it is the "cult phone from the US".

Anyone else think that the whole ipod thing is turning (or has turned) into a cult thing? Could somebody do us a favor and look at the percent of posts on giz that are about iphones and ipods?

soldstatic

Seriously though, the iPod labeling is a minor point. Carriers this side of the pond are continually making similar gaffs. What iPod would a call plan be useful for? That said it could well be PS work, with the headline present as a double bluff. We just think it is note worthy, so we're letting you in on it. Cheers.

Haroon Malik
