I think a lot of y'all are missing the point here: this is Palm's foray into a lower-end market.

There's no reason to expect this device, at this price point, to have all the features the top-of-the-line Treos don't have. The last thing they are trying to do here is attract those with 700p's and the like.

Similar to what Palm did with the Zire years ago, the Treo 500 is targeting people who bristle at smartphone prices, but are nevertheless interested in trying one out.

With that in mind, this is a good product and a step in the right direction.

ctettleton

Well it definitely looks far better than the busted old Treo 600 I've been carrying around. Though the threaded SMS is a pretty big deal for me... I'm sure there's gotta be a WM app out there that does the job. Considering I'm looking to buy the HTC Vox right now, I'd already come to terms with the loss of my precious touchscreen. I agree that the lack of internal storage space is no big deal as well, I just bought a 2gb microSD card for $15. If this thing had storage space like the iPhone, it would cost a TON more. DO NOT WANT.

jennyfur

I agree with other commenters: there's nothing Palm about this. WM6 and lack of touch screen mean it's as boring, clunky, and non-user-friendly as every other smart phone out there. This is a ridiculous step back for Palm. If this is their CEO's idea of "making progress," he needs to get a grip... and get an iPhone.

J.T.

@OldMrTwoArms: yeah, but if you think about it, it fits right into making a phone to be as cheap as possible. I mean, some people these days (who are not avid multimedia users) aren't going to need that much space, especially if they're just using the phone for "business purposes." And also, with how cheap MicroSD cards are these days there's really no use on storing a whole bunch of memory into a phone and making it more expensive when it can be upgraded anyway with a cheap card. My Blackjack, although old, has a 1 gig card that I install most of my programs on as well as storing some music, vids, and pics, and its been a year since I got the 1 gig. Then it was 24.99. Now you can usually pick up a 2 gig for about 20 bucks.

SomeoneUKno

150MB internal memory? Doesn't the iPhone have GB's? Don't get me wrong, I love my Treo and personally think its far superior to many other options out there but jeez Palm, would it hurt to put in a larger touchscreen and more onboard memory?

tarochan

@all the no touch screen comments

I was in the same camp as you. I manage all the cell phones for my company. (about 200 devices) I've always pushed people towards the Treo 700w and away from the Q because of the touch screen. However I've lost count of the number of Treo users I've had that have traded down to a Q and absolutely love it.

I've always felt a touchscreen was mandatory, but it seems there is a sizable number of users that don't need it.

And if I can get them a WM phone(WM is company standard...) at no cost with contract, I'll have more money left in my budget for other cool stuff.

Bender

No threaded SMS or ringer-off switch either - two very strong reasons to stick with Palm hardware (of either flavour) in the past, at least for me.

This is Windows Mobile 6 Standard, though - a version of the OS designed for keyboard control and it works extremely well. Still not a patch on Palm OS, of course. Oh and did I mention the 2.5mm headphone socket?

Call me Kenneth
