@EMoShunz: And your statement is... what... dogma? Sure isn't fact.

Fanboyism from either side is useless. Being a Gateway, I'm skeptical of the unit's performance and quality. However, the design is excellent (from what I can see in the pics and read here). My only potential complaint thus far is the huge chin (referred to as Leno-sized in a previous posting). Hiding some of the external connections in the power brick is an excellent idea.

Why is it that the fanboys always have to claim that something like this can't be as good as the Apple original? As has been pointed out (though the fanboys won't listen), early PCs were almost all one-piece units.

hnkelley

I like the form factor of the iMac and I realize that a lot of people don't like Macs, whether because of the OS or the company, so I think that copying the form factor is a good idea. If I weren't an Apple fanboy I'd probably get this computer. It's the best-looking all-in-one Windows PC I've seen. Plus the wireless mouse & keyboard are a good idea. I hate how few ports most Macs have and having to tie one of 2 USB ports up for the keyboard is annoying. This PC seems to have enough ports but not an ugly mess of them. My mom has a Gateway and besides some trackpad scrolling issues, it's a good computer. I hope this sells well.

kzooguy

"SOMEONEUKNO" FOR PRESIDENT! "SOMEONEUKNO" FOR PRESIDENT!

Why is it that when anything with aero-glass or sleek form factor comes out, every self proclaimed Mac idiot screams that they are "copying Mac". Someone call Honda cuz their concept car dash resembles an iPhone. Put down your fucking non-fat sugar free café lattes, you high school retards that never got your picture in the yearbooks, and pick up a fucking cup of "Joe". I bet you guys criticize every glitch in every detail of every product in your daily life, and compare it to the hard-on you have for your Mac. After your mom makes you dinner, try to expand your noodle a bit and think about what a company is trying to do.

I applaud Gateways attempt to place itself above the "Black box" form factor of Dell. This is a sleek design with innovative concepts. Additionally they look like they have a bleeding edge 30' display launching soon, also with bold functionality, technology and form factor. Q4 product launches are looking good from this all but disappeared computer company! And I salute any company bold enough to take on the Dell god and steal some of its market share.

But hey, that's just my 2 cents…

WuzLucky

After I finish my comment, I'm betting some numbers on the lotery also.

Gateway looks great! And this is a lot from someone who has given up buying desktop computers.
It completely solves my worst grudges with Desktop computers. Design is hot, simple and practical. I know some people didn't like the ports-on-a-brick idea... but I find it interesting, if you give it some work.

I would conceal it under my desk. Would be just perfect.

Really? 'Cause from my perspective (having both Mac and PC boxes on my desk right now, in fact) it seems that the Mac is more practical and functional than the PC.

@banmojo: With those specs, you can build a better SFF desktop for under $800. The footprint will only be modestly larger and would have better longevity (since it would be easier to upgrade components over time).

Gateway did some really smart things here, as has been pointed out. I do see significant value in the all-in-one design, and I know that these types of machines are generally not geared toward people who prefers to build computers themselves, but when it comes down to it, I don't know if the $1000 premium for convenience can be justified.

Lateral Thinking Experiment

I think this is a better design than most, but having owned both a 17" Gateway all-in-one system and a 20" iMac G5 (with iSight), I'll stick with Apple :)

I like the idea of integrating some ports into the external power supply and I like the idea of providing 2 user-accessible hard drive bays...

But beyond the fact that I prefer OS X, I still think the iMac is better because of its internal power supply and reliability!

I've personally replaced the LCD inverter in my Gateway twice (it turns out this is a common problem) while the iMac is rock solid.

tnkgrl

Gateway has been at this game for a long time. As long, if not longer than Apple. Take a look [support.gateway.com]
This came out while Apple still had it's big blue iMacs. It's not a matter of who did it first either. It's a matter of who markets it the best. Apple has always done this better than anyone in the industry.

While the iMac is a bit slicker looking, the ONE is an awesome step in the right direction for the PC market. I for one am just happy to see some progress and hopefully this is a good sign for things to come.

Knique

Geez, someone a couple posts up needs some anger management classes!

Yes, there have been all-in-one Windows alternatives to iMac around for a while. You can find them practically hidden in the back of PC Magazine practically hidden from view. Why? Because they are butt ugly.

And the customer satisfaction survey's just came out in PC Magazine. Who was at the top of the list? Apple.

I switched from PC's to Mac's in 2002. Since then I have not had to fiddle around with any problems. No registry, no troubleshooting sound-cards, drivers, dll's, spyware etc. Instead I use those potentially wasted hours enjoying my life, not trying to figure out why my mom can't get on Windows Messenger because a barely documented firewall port has to be opened up.

I've had 7 Macs since 2002 and once I had to bring my PowerMac G5 back to the store because it died after a week. And that's the extent of my Mac troubles. So don't go spouting off about things of which you are ignorant of.

bdkennedy1

@OBTUSEGOOSE: technically only 6, one slot is a card reader, but yea, the firewire and at least two of the USBs, and probably the audios should be on the back. Leave a couple USB on the end for sticking in flash drives or stuff you don't leave connected when you walk away.

@RAWHEAD: There's four ports on the main body for the removable stuff, I think the brick ports are meant for things like external drives and such that would rarely need to be accessed. And on the floor they're bout as accessible as if plugged in to the back of a desktop sitting on the floor under a desk anyways.

mcnee

"The One has but one cable, sticking out of its chrome-plated rear end."

Sounds great on paper, and certainly, can be aesthetically more pleasing in some cases than even the iMac (this coming from an Apple fan and iMac owner).

However, in reality, USB cables, Ethernet cables, etc. need to be accessed (plugged/unplugged) frequently and would make little sense for us to have to stoop down on the floor every time we need to. Meaning, we'll end up using the ports on the side of the computer OR leaving the brick on our desks, which of course defies the purpose.

Also, let's not forget that our floors are already just littered with power bricks (external HDD drives, scanners, printers, you name it). This just adds to that pile. Having those ports on the brick makes it look a like a "neat" little idea, but in reality, I think they're just excuses for them not able to make the power source internal and still keep heat levels sufficiently low to go with this sleek little design.

rawhead

Jesus people, are some of you so into your fucking Macs that all you can ever say is "Oh look. Since its automatically a PC, its already bad because it isn't a Mac." I'm sorry to rant, but I am so tired of listening to people getting on their soapboxes when they even hear the word "PC" put into something! You're acting like the iMac has been the only fucking design like this ever to come out, and guess what? Sorry to tell you, but its NOT. Many other smaller companies have come out with stuff like it too, but its mainly based off of business applications, not consumer. Have they all been multimedia based like the iMac or the Gateway One? No, but they still were computers built into a small package in the same way. But, I guess those companies went forward into time and copies the oh-so-great iMac too, right?

And now before you start calling me some Windows fanboy or something, zip it. I've had my many complaints about how Windows has run over the years, just like the next person, but I still use a PC with Windows and Linux. So now, what do you have to say about Linux? Does it suck balls just like everything else that doesnt have the fucking Apple logo stuck on it somewhere? And guess what? As hard as it may be to believe, Macs screw up too. I know it might take you a minute to swallow that one, but its true. I've run on Macs before and they've screwed up on me when I've been doing video editing, or even when I'm browsing in Safari. Just like Windows PC's, Macs have their flaws. But of course I must be wrong on that too, because the Mac vs. PC commercials Apple made said the complete opposite, right?

SomeoneUKno

Actually, I think they have some very fine ideas. As long as there are enough ports on the computer to hook up an iPod/Zune/whatever, an external or flash drive, and handle audio output, it's a fine computer.

I like that you can pop it open and add a second internal drive. Of course, the brick is a good idea. Apple did that first with their cinema displays. Putting multiple ports on the back of the monitor and routing Firewire and USB through them. But this takes it a few setps further. Good job Gateway.

I think they've done the best imitation of an iMac with this by far. But the iMac is still a compelling product and this is no iMac killer. iMacs go up to 24 inches! For the same prices! Way, way better screens than this "One." 1440x900. Are they seriously thinking that is acceptable?

Oh, not only does the iMac now have digital audio output, it also has Firewire 800. Gateway has a few things to do to beat the iMac. Too bad it looks so top-heavy and is at the same time, so thick at the bottom. But that's the price you pay for access and not tipping over. I wonder how tipping will play out.

leicaman

As an individual who has owned and used many Gateways over the years (I have also used Dells, Macs, HP, Scratchbuilt, an Acer, and wait for it... a Goldstar!), I have never had a problem with any of my Gateway systems. The tech and C.S. were top notch, on the rare occasion I had need to call upon them.

What I have always admired about Gateway is their willingness to attempt new things, regardless of whether or not the idea pans out in the end. I think that the Destination was a great attempt at something new, the Astro was a... decent attempt at offering... something, and all of the Profile systems at least took a look at how to meet a need.

And I will never be the type of person who puts down someone for improving the idea of someone else. "First!" means very little to me, but "Better!" or "Best!" means a lot.

zenpoet

Look, it OBVIOUSLY took its design cues from the iMac. To deny that would be 31 flavors of retarded.

That said, if you are going to rip something off, why not rip off the best? This Gateway One is attractive... but the base iMac is a little bigger (20 vs 19), and CHEAPER... since price is one of the only factors that would cause someone to buy a Gateway, why choose this over an iMac?

Design-wise I give this three big thumbs up! The best comparison is iMac, and I like everything Gateway has done here more than Apple(except for the non-integrated camera-unless it will be upgradeable in the future?) Looks like an iMac-killer.
Although the media center features + better remote + wireless everything + futureproofing + easy upgradability does offset it a lot.....

Regardless of the iClone look, this is a pretty good step for Gateway. Of course, I'd rather not confine myself to Vista, but the overall package is very nice. However, I still have my doubts about the support on the back. It really looks pretty rickety to me, especially if you want the display to lean a bit more erect. However much of an Apple coattail rider I believe this thing to be, this design is much better than anything that HP and Dell have dished out.

Kaiser-Machead on the Edge
