it is very easy to downgrade the phone to 1.0.2 - find the update in download form (google search) and once you have it on your mac hold the option key when you push the restore button in itunes - it will pop up asking for you to locate the file - and voila 1.0.2 iphone

So, I went ahead and updated my iPhone with installer.app and few 3rd party apps on the phone. It all worked out.

My question is in response to many stating that all the 3rd party apps are now "hidden" and still on the phone. 1. How do you know that they are still there? -and- 2. How do I now clean them off if they are indeed "hidden".

Thanks!

Sscrubber

The phone rocks as is. I never had an update on my Razor, Sliver, Crackberry and unlocked, this phone does more then any of them. I don't ever have to update it. iTunes on my phone would be nice but, really if I can't wait a few hours to go home so I can download and add a song to my phone there might just be something wrong with me. The other features sound great but, I like being creative with my phone much more then a double home click and a .space.

RuGGeR

Oh gosh!!! I decided to apply the update as I have been waiting for the Wi Fi iTunes store. My only problem was that I used iBrickr and after hearing all of these horror stories I was scared to even try to update my phone. But, I just did it and.......IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!! It took away the apps I had from iBrickr but I now have a purple widget for wi fi iTunes. When I downloaded the update a recovery mode thing came up. And after waiting what seemed like an eternity, it was saying things like updating firmware and stuff and finally my phone came on to the activation screen, this is where I half panicked because instead of the earth icon being the picture, it was my deathstar at&t pic.......and then it said activating iPhone, and a little while later it said...........ACTIVATED!!! All of my music, contacts, nud.....umm, I mean pics all intact. I WILL NEVER RISK HAVING MY iPHONE BRICKED EVER AGAIN! I already replaced one that I lost after a night of being drunk, and you know what...I gave up getting drunk for this phone, so now I give up trying to hack into it......it's too much money! Once again, if you used iBrickr and ARE an AT&T customer, you CAN do the update and you will lose nothing but the applications you modified your phone with the iBrickr program.

codeazrael

@TheJunkMonger: No, I think your firmware will still be the old one. The firmware being sold on iPhones are all much older than what's available on iTunes.

The newest firmware that can support unlock was 1.0.2(1C28). You will probably get an older firmware than this one, but you can no longer update it to 1.0.2(1C28) because if you update it will go straight to the new 1.1.1 firmware.

lol. Brought the ibrick to apple and let them deal with it. I have my new virgin iphone. No one mentions the speaker updates, but i think the volume fixes are the real reason people should be upgrading. Now they just have to update the newer LCDs that have the ipod touch shimmer problems and we are all 100%.. I thought since is was a coating issue with the LCD itself that it couldn't be fixed through firmware but I saw a 1.1.1 Touch that used to have the negative blacks and it looks really black now.

thechansen

There's a law that was passed some time ago that makes it a law that if you want your cell phone unlocked from a carrier, they are bound to unlock it. How can Apple say "No, you can't"? Is this just more example of how Apple got in over their heads stepping into the cell phone market?

singlecoilpickup

SIM CARD still out of the phone. So, if the phone was turned on using this methodoligy, can I update to the new Apple update without phone being messed up?

Well, we now have a Sony PSP firmware war on our hands. If the once hackerish Jobs would just mandate to the code monkeys to let it all go i.e. give the people who just want to use the cheap 4g as an open source PMP then I would be happy. Free the base features and give everyone not just people with horrible credit the option to activate with a go phone account...
Apple, you gave us a tool that the open source community will not give up on easily.
Don't free the att overlords thats fine but release the restrictive updates for 3rd party applications. Especially when these people are non-profit or charity driven developers.

Hypenotist

3) home button has double-click option
4) option - when playing music, show iPod controls instead on/off (no difference to me)
5)camera - same
6)wifi reception - same
7)yahoo mail does not hang phone when downloading large attachments (1meg)
7a)clicking on folder initiates refresh which continues even after navigating away from mail app
7b) after downloading images inside email, navigating away and back, images are still there. cache seems larger
8)stocks can be reordered
9)weather can be reordered

Run pacay to start the comm center..maybe that may help..read here for why i say that...

i had a similar issue earlier yesterday while trying to unlock the iphone...i tried using the anysim with the original att sim inside the iphone not realising that it had to be removed..anyways...it got stuck or something and basically the baseband or comm center or something was unloaded somehow...and in trying to get somewhere i deactivated with ibrickr...now i was stuck..cause ibrickr recognized the iphone as jailbreaked but the activation was required...and the "i" icon next to activation could not recognise the IMEI or CCID. i tried with the other original sims/tmobile sims etc ..nada.nothing worked and was to the same effect..realizing that the baseband is unloaded or comm center is stopped. So i am jailbreaked and still require activation and my radio is off ..now what do i do...here is how..run pacay...and click activate.bat...for some reason that loaded the comm center back and activation thru ibrickr went thru...i am guessing the same happened with brian lam's phone..with the activation the rtadio is off and it does not recognise any sim irrespective of att or tmobile...try running pacay and see if it picks up the radio

Let me know..

vipari

Sounds like a decent update, at least they are working on something other than playing the cat to the hacker mice. One wonders about the implications of this... it's one thing when independent developers create hacks and workarounds like this, it's another when established software companies sell software designed for a purpose they know is arguably illegitimate and which could break at any time. Something tells me the EULA for iTonic and some of the others (which I realize may not be affected by THIS update, but surely will be proactively broken by Apple at some point) explicitly states that if the program ceases to work, too bad for you...

Qwaktastic

In light of this article from Mac Rumors, I'm even more confused. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like if you were just running 3rd party apps, and don't mind losing them, you can update to 1.1.1?
Throughout my very rudimentary iPhone hacking ventures, I've used iFuntastic and Installer.app at different times.
So will 1.1.1 semi-brick my iPhone or not?
I should never hack with easy GUIs, again, as I obviously am clueless as to what I'm doing. :-[

QWERTYthon

I am speculating here, but it seems to me that a specific SIM card is TIED to a particular iPhone's IMEI number.
iTunes checks a database to make sure the iPhone's IMEI number and SIM card number MATCH and if so, allows activation.

So the 'Not a Valid SIM' problem could be one of two possibilities.

a) anySIM screwed your IMEI number. Check to see if it looks valid. Should be the same as the one on your original iPhone box.

OR

b) The 'legit' AT&T SIM you talk about was activated on ANOTHER iPhone.

See here about IMEI error:

Hey guys, if your iPhone is unlocked, I don't think you should just restore it. Simply restoring it does not erase everything in the iPhone. I would recommend reloading the original baseband firmware. Here is how to do it:

Collect these files from the web:
1. ICE03.14.08_G.eep
2. ICE03.14.08_G.fls
3. bbupdater

Use iBricker to upload these files to /usr/bin

Next, install OpenSSH and make a SSH connection (I use the free software Putty on my Windows Vista to connect to the iPhone) into the iPhone and then go to /usr/bin using the command:
cd /usr/bin

Next, run the command:
chmod +x bbupdater

Next, run this command:
bbupdater -f *.fls -e *.eep

This will reload the original baseband firmware. After this, do a restore in iTunes to the new firmware. This should make your phone appear as a genuine locked AT&T phone again.

[UPDATE: It doesn't brick it, but "relocks it proper"]

Clear as mud. Let me take a crack at interpreting:

"Friends: don't update if you want everything to stay as it is. Chances are, you're going to get bricked, lose your 3rd party apps, and sacrifice your first born. Instead, might I suggest you let the professional pipe-hitting hackers get their tools, Jolt cola and hyperlinks on and work on the system a little. thats the spirit. team work, we're in this together. I estimate 75% of us bend over for the man everyday anyway so the best remedy is tickling each others butts. I have issued your raincheck.

thetickler

Thank you. That is clearer. So the current word (for now) is as follows:

If you have 3rd party apps installed on your i-phone, don't do update if you want to keep them. The update wipes them out (or at least hides them).

Good enough for me - screw the update until there is a patch.
