No, Sony does has a real 4k projector. There are no visible lines as you were saying unless there was a major product change. I saw it at one of the asc demos. Where/when did you see it ?

There also isn't subpixular optical cross talk. You made that up.

If you are implying that there is no visible difference between 2k and 4 k resolution that is only true at great distances from the screen. At normal distances there is a visible difference, otherwise IMAX wouldn't exist and vista vision would be pointless.

let me qualify my last remark, Sony has to strap 2 projectors together for 3D (as they did at and ShoWest and were caught). Their "4k" isn't really 4K, they're fudging the pixals -first, it's actually 4 1k quadrants together on one chip, the seams are visible. Secondly, the eye doesn't see 4k cause there's sub-pixal optical cross talk, the pixals bleed into each other. The ASC isn't pleased with the results and doesn't meet the DCI spec, because of heat induced color drift and other problems. Sony has been trying unload this dog on the industry and and few are buying.

the dudes at FXGuide bought camera #22, and subseqently came over to my place of business a few weeks ago and actually shot some test footage. More relevantly, you can actually download and check out some uncompressed 4k frames and read their commentary on the site. I'm not completely sold on the thing as an effects camera, but the experience that led to that assessment may have more to do with how the footage is treated before it gets to compositing than the sensor itself...

The pipeline is far from being perfected. The only software shipping with the camera that will translate the RedCode footage into quicktime is an engineering build that is somewhat frustrating to use. Plus, many features on the camera were still waiting to be activated by upcoming firmware updates. Kinda reminds me of the iPhone, actually.

Outside of the Flame keyer, though, the images look f**cking fantastic.

I hate to say it, but these cameras are just too much camera for 98% of Gizmodo's readers (including me). These are built to replace super-high-end pro rigs used to for movies, commercials, etc. For those who want this thing to be cheaper, this camera is probably not the camera for you. This thing is dirt cheap for the people/companies who can really use it.
