Comment on Rocket-Powered 21-Foot-Long X-Wing Model Actually Flies (Updated: Built-in R2-D2) After they had the wooden fuselage completed , they should have then
coated it with west system epoxy, sand it and then prime it. At this
point it could then be sprayed with a mold release and then gel coated
and then make a mold of it using west system epoxy and fiberglass.
After the mold was completed and preped, then make the actual model out
of carbon fiber and west system epoxy. You would have a few light ply
formers/bulkheads but most of the airframe would be carbon fiber. Do
the same thing with the wings, mabe even use a foam core for the most
outer part. This rocket would be much lighter and even more importantly
much stronger and may have been able to withstand the force of the
thrust of the launch and the air drag on the wings. As far as people as
people saying that the paint job sucks, I thought it looked good. It
was "weathered" which is a term that scale modelers use to make there
models look real (you dont see actual B-52"s looking brand new just out
of the paint booth, do you)?

@dr1chert:
Does it make me a bad person if I love to eat a hot-fudge sundae? It's of no value to anyone else for me to do so, and the money I could save by adopting a subsistence diet could go to feeding starving people in Africa. I honestly don't care. I don't like the idea of anyone starving, but I am the most important person in my life, and most of what I do is directed toward making me happy. That's the way it 'ought to be. Why do you care if my passion for hot-fudge sundaes is replaced by a devotion to a specific work of art? Even if you think that artwork is overrated, does that make the devotion any less ethically defensible? All I'm saying is, I would never begrudge you the right to worship Dane Cook.

guypatsy

Previous posters are right, there is no way this can end any way but awesome. If it flies beautifully or if it blows up in a big fireball, equally awesome.

For the naysayers of wood, yes, aerospace stoped using wood a while back, but as long as you aren't carrying much weight, and as long as you aren't traveling at the speed of sound, then wood is perfectly fine and more than strong enough to support a proper airframe.

Hell, MOST of the WWI aircraft were wood with fabric coverings. And though I can't remember the name of it, I could have sworn I've seen a history channel thing on our military using a huge wooden C130 type cargo plane at one time because metal was in short supply. They were massive and held together fine.

The only reason to dump wood as a medium (especially a hobby builder on a budget) is if you want to surpass certain speed barriers and/or cargo capacities.

archaic0

@davemak: Spacecraft SHOULD look clean and pristine if they are only ever flown in the near-vacuum of space. However, anything that is designed to take off or land from the Earth is subject to weathering. Ever taken a good look at the shuttle orbiters? Beat up, rightfully so.

The Lunar Module, on the other hand, only ever flew in space (and was inside a shroud during launch). That's why you never see any weathering in photos or on models. And that's why the Discovery had no visible weathering.

If only a person could fly in this... then they would be able to fufill their life long dream of burning to death in an X-wing-shaped fireball/deathtrap.

I give it an A for effort, and it if blows up, even better. Good work.

Oh, and the scortch marks... c'mon, that added to the realism in the movies, gives this one an air of authenticity. Part of the reason the new ones sucked so bad (for me) was that none of the stuff look liked it'd been into/out of space (scortches) or seen any action.

Evil J

@schrosa: Actually there is a very good reason for this. The original design for the X-wing eventually melded into Ralph McQuarrie's later designs of the Viper.

Other interesting concepts that went from one to the other

1) The original Vipers McQuarrie designed but was tossed out became Buck Rogers ship in the 80's series.

2) The Star Destroyer actaully came out of a design for the never produced Star Trek movie "Planet of the Titans" Take a Star Destroyer, shrink it, cut off the bridge, and add a saucer and two engines to it and you will get what the original redesigned ship was to look like before the original Enterprise designer Matt Jefferies stepped in and gave us a design much closer to the movie version of the Enterprise as we know it. Jafferies version of the refit can be seen at a Planet Hollywood further redesigned to look closer ot the movie version for distance shots (though the two have much differences in them)

3) Much of Ralph McQuarrie's stuff for the Star Trek movie that never was eventually turned up in Star Wars.

Falconfire
