Here's a nice feature:

quit paying the music industry

After all, each Zune purchased, some money goes to Universal Music "just because" a Zune can be used to pirate music.

Then again, I suppose its why all the music companies want to bully Apple into giving them a cut of the iPod sales now. (Though, at least Apple is also a bully and can fight back...)

Worf

This ability has been moronically omitted from both the iPod and the Zune since Day 1. Players like the Rio Karma and the Creative Zen Vision: M got it right, so why aren't the big boys playing along, too?

Bottom line: I don't want to sync my damn player every time I want to create a new mix. It's a complete waste of time.

J.T.

Morgan, give the new Zune software a chance. Whereas the original software was a shoddy tweak of WMP, the new software is supposed to be ground up and might actually be better. If the new software is lousy, well, you win. ;)

I'm definitely glad this isn't a touchscreen device. I want a music player, not a gadget. The Zune 1's biggest redeeming feature was that, IMO, it was more "music-y" than most DAPs, and felt like an audio device. Most DAPs (iPods included) feel like high-tech doodads, but the Zune feels very music-oriented and straightforward, and that's what I like about it.

Also, I really can't fathom the people criticizing the Zune 80's design. It's simple, functional, and minimal. It's actually more elegant than the iPod design. The flash players are a little less sleek looking, but still perfectly decent.

typoink

I really agree with TYPOINK about lossless. Microsoft isn't likely to support things that are in direct competition to its own properties unless the demand is great enough (e.g. its codec support for mpeg-4, h.264, and AAC). Additionally, if Microsoft were to release something that would allow it to interface with iPod accesories, it would get skinned alive by the bloggers and Apple fanboys, not to mention Apple itself. One need only look to Real's Harmony to see this in action.

And playlist sharing through on-device wifi is currently supported and will continue to be in the next update, according to Zune team members. I do agree with you that tighter integration to the Xbox and dropping the restrictions would be a good thing, but just give them time.

But iTunes support? Blech! I wouldn't wish that on anyone, not even iPod owners. The new Zune software looks amazing, but I'm going to hold off on judgement until it comes out.

mysekurity

What's with all the idiots asking for the Zune to "support" iTunes and iPod accessories? It's the other way around, which is why it can't ever happen. Apple owns iTunes and only Apple can support additional players with the software. Similarly the iPod connector all the accessories use is patented and licensed by Apple. There is no legal way for Microsoft or any other competitor to make their devices "support" Apple's proprietary software and interfaces.

dangrossman

Really, though, compatibility with iTunes would be nice, but as it has been pointed out, it's an extremely long shot =_= I hope future Zunes can accept third-party codecs as well (it IS based on Windows CE, so it's plausible, right?).

The 3 play limitation isn't a big deal to me bc after 3 listening times, I should know whether I want to buy the song or not.

My Wish List is:

1. Mac support. At least Intel Mac support, darn it!!!

2. A FREE system where you can download a minimum number of songs (say 15) and there's a 15-30 second, non-skippable music ad after song 7. The ad would auto-update when in a wifi range after, say, 3 days. It'd be a customizable radio without the 2 minute-long ads. That'd be hot!!!

3. Beam your songs to multiple users at once. Musicians could use this to promote their new sing at a concert (obviously sponsored by Zune). It would probably be only indie artists, though, cuz the RIAA would NOT go for this idea.

DW

Also, playlist sharing is intended to be part of the Zune Social network, so you WILL be able to send mixtapes to your friends, just not device-to-device, and it'll require a subscription.

I think MS needs to launch an ad campaign explaining the Zune Pass. 99% of people I talk to DON'T understand this. They think subscription services still require you to pay per track (and think that iTunes is the same thing, only without a subscription fee) or that sub services don't allow you to get much music or that the audio quality is bad or that you can't put it all on a DAP.

Subscription service can be fantastic and there's, I think, a lot of people who'd really like it (especially if they can lower the monthly fee by a couple bucks).

typoink

FLAC support is really unnecessary, given that the new Zunes DO have WMA Lossless support. There's no quality difference between them, and only minimal filesize differences. If you have a FLAC library, just batch transcode it to WMA Lossless if you want portable lossless audio. Sure, it's a one-time hassle, but lossless codecs don't degrade by transcoding, so there's no real prohibitive reason.

If you're techie enough to USE flac to begin with, you're techie enough to handle a batch transcoding.

Yeah, more standard support is better, but I can forgive MS for wanting to simplify things and steer people onto the WMA path. OGG support I DO think should be included, though, since lossy transcoding isn't a good option. But that's why ripping lossless is the way to go!

typoink

Well, the long awaited but not yet implemented DJ-function is a feature I would like to see in the Zune 3. Listening to music your friend is currently listening and experience the music together.
You then don't have to ask physically, but you can scan your direct Zune Wifi environment and join in on other Zune's.
This was announced at the introduction of first generation Zune, but didn't make it into the release of the Zune. So why promise and don't implement it... Unless it will be a feature for the third generation Zune or a feature that will be implemented due to another software update.

DJQubic

1. I am one of those people who demand Audiobook support in a player. Considering every iPod has it, and many other players - this is a big omission in my book.

2. OOG and FLAC support. This could push the Zune over the top in support. Audiophiles demand a good lossless compression standard and supporting FLAC is huge.

3. No one else has mentioned this, but I would like to see the Zune become iPod Dock compatible. There are hundreds of iPod compatible systems out there and giving the Zune the ability to take advantage of car hookups or 3rd party speaker systems will be HUGE.

However, Microsoft usually does not like to play nice with others so I do not expect any of my suggestions to go through. While they could give MS a marketing advantage over the iPod and expand its adoption, MS is too limited by their need to dominate a market and they only know one way to do it and unfortunately for us this means they have to keep things locked down.

Ok, this is what Zune 3 needs and what the zune 1 & 2 can mostly support-
1- Bluetooth on the wi-fi chip. I own stereo bluetooth headphones, and i don't want to have to use an audio dongle to listen to them

2-Ability to sync movies and TV shows from both the zune marketplace and the xbox 360. Syncing with media center is great, because i already have a dual tuner working in media center for me, so 1.99 per show is no-go for me, but I can understand why many people want it. Music purchases should also be able to be made from your 360, because that would be a convenient feature.

3-Games. I know they already said they won't do this, but it would be awesome if you could either sync some xbox live arcade games or buy zune games on the zune marketplace, xbox 360 and the zune itself via wi-fi

4-a wi-fi store along with syncing with your zune software from any wi-fi hotspot, not just your home wi-fi. This wouldn't just be cool, it would also be convenient. Oh, and if they really want it to work well, they also need to make it so that the zune software will automatically download any new music downloaded over wi-fi. This would be another important feature, because it would make the zune an even easier to use product than the Ipod or Iphone, because with those products, after purchasing songs over wi-fi, to use them in itunes, you have to dock your Ipod/Iphone and download them off of your PMP, not off of a server, which can be slower and less convenient.

5-An accelerometer or another type of sensor to tilt pictures and video the right way. This can be kind of annoying when you have a picture that is landscape, but gets formatted in a weird way and ends up being portrait. If not that, then at least an option to rotate video and pictures from the center button options menu

6-Ability to view media center Live from your zune, this way you can watch tv and view content from your pc from any wi-fi hotspot. this would only need software, no hardware, so with some coding and a lot of testing, this can be done. It would be similar to products such as locationfree player for the PSP or slingbox for your PC

Crazysamz

The 3-plays limit makes no sense whatsoever in an environment that includes a subscription model.

When sharing between 2 Zunes that are both subscribers, subscription tracks should be automatically unlimited!

Similarly, why not enable the Zune store for wireless downloading? If I'm a subscriber, then I could reload my 4 or 8 GB Zune with any available tracks from a Wi-Fi connection. It's the mythical jukebox in the sky!

That would be a feature set that goes above and beyond iPod/iTunes, since Apple's so keen on the pay-per-track model.

dotyoureyes

I have a few:

Usable as a Sideshow device.

Can play a select number of X BOX Live Arcade Games.

WiFi Connectivity to X BOX as secondary display (ala. PSP).

SD Card input, to use a portable photograph storage center for trips.

WiFi Store (Really, i thought it was coming).

720 or 640x480 screen (i don't think the current specs reveal res, but I'm not sure).

Sideshow device!!!

Lightweight web browser.

A second size option for the larger Zune 2 (80 and 120, for example).

A small number of controls on the side for in-pocket use.

A 16 gig Zune Slim right from the onset. I thought that was going to happen for Zune 2.

A Hybrid connector, which has USB in the center, and along the edge the proprietary connectors, so you can use a Zune dock, but when your away, you can use a standard USB connector.

Windows Media Center Internet TV Integration (I know its in beta, but by next year, it should be ready).

Media Center control. I have no idea how, but that would be awesome to use it as a controller for your media center. No reason at all, just a gimmick.

More codec support is needed, but considering PC's are getting pretty fast, converting will take less and less time, to the point that Movies take just as much time as song ripping, so that isnt too big of a deal.

Otherwise, the Zune 2 has everything i need right now.

But i still have to wait for Creative's Vision:M or Vision:W replacement before i make any player purchase.

diabolusunknown

I think the Zune desperately needs a higher screen resolution. I mean, come on, the Zune 80 has the same resolution as the iPod classic -- with a .7" bigger screen. What's the point of a bigger screen if it's not being used to its full potential?

Also, when the Zune supports gaming (note that I say "when", not "if"), it'll probably be based on some form of the XNA framework, so it'd be nice if, like the Xbox 360, games that you've personally coded in XNA could be played on the device. That'd be sweet.

Finally, what about some sort of Media Search? Or has this been done before? (With an on screen keyboard navigated via Zune Pad, similar to the one on the PSP.)

Ok, this is what Zune 3 needs-
1- Bluetooth on the wi-fi chip.

If not that, then at least an option to rotate video and pictures from the center button options mnenu

Crazysamz

wtf. i dont understand how bluetooth is not standard on music players yet. what's the deal?

i realize apple needs to have silhouetted earbud cables for their ipod ads, but if microsoft wants to grab some marketshare, shouldn't BT be at the top of their list?

they give it wifi but no bluetooth? i guess i'll just keep using my crappy cell phone as a music player.

chocorua

Well, to those saying change the app... we'll have to see how the new Zune app plays out when it is released.

As-disk support would be great, even as a separate partition. The reason for not doing that is controlling everything on the filesystem and obfuscation, exactly why the iPod does it too.

Hardware WiFi switch would be nice to have, by why? AFAIK, unless you specifically go to social, it shouldn't randomly try to find people, does it?

What I want is .mkv support and SOFT SUBTITLES. Forever I've been asking portable media players to support soft subtitles for those who like to watch movies from OTHER COUNTRIES. Seems like only the PMPs from Korea seem to have this as a standard feature.

fuzzycuffs

3) option to navigate and play by folder as well as by tag

Syncing is annoying when you have way more music than fits on a player, and browsing 80GB of albums all in one giant list is cumbersome. I like to split up my music collection by album genre (like classical, pop, soundtrack, etc.) and then browse whole albums of that genre.

For someone who has used a Zune before, when you search by genre, does it list whole albums or just single tracks? I can't imagine ever wanting to browse 80GB of tracks instead of albums.

Brandson

I'd agree with adding disk access, but its not a big issue for me... personally all the additions of a phone and gaming seem like its just taking away from the aspect that its a music device. I don't want my cell phone to die, or my game to not get saved, or not be able to listen to music because I was doing something else that drained the battery. I'd rather carry around two small devices...and as for my number one thing about zune 3? I'd like to see it be able to work with all media players, and you can still have the zune software to buy music from them (i don't mean also able to buy from itunes) and do restore/repair/updates...and yes more file formats. If the opening of the Amazon mp3 has taught us anything, its that people want freedom with their gear and files. If I buy a song, I want it to work and have the freedom to burn it or load it to any device I want. Power to the people...or in this case, the social.

leadster618
