You only have to look at the MP3 and other tri-bikes to see how stable they are, this concept is even better, as for the US safety regulations, they already killed Concorde so if they want to whine about air bags crumple zones and turning circles ....don't let them have it !!
Bring it to Europe where technology and speed is appreciated, and leave the Yanks to their Harleys, maybe one day we'll see a hardtail quad.......

Due to my spinal cord condition, I can't ride a regular motorcycle. This tesseract will give me the opportunity to be able to ride a motorcycle again, it would have the balance and my body would not have to do the strenght. Hey, let's take the worst aspects of a motorcycle (no seat belt or air bags, no crumple zones, no cargo capacity) and merge them with the worst aspects of a 4-wheeled automobile (extra size, twice as many tires to fail, twice as many brakes to maintain, lowered maneuverability) and give it a cool name! If this vehicle ever sells more than 100 units, I'll eat my shoe.

For you doubters about how this would work, you might want to look up the Piaggio MP3 (what_a_great_name) scooter. It's unusual in that it has two front wheels, which allow for tilting into the turn while providing extra grip.
Also, this bike makes me think of those sweet bikes I saw in FFVII: Advent Children, only without the sword mounts, and with a crapload less power...

Motorcycles actually have trouble in high-speed turns, because they lack sufficient traction. Great power-to-weight, but with a tiny contact patch, it's asking for trouble in a turn. That's one of the advantages of the trike and quad designs. The upshot of the motorcycle, however, comes in the turning radius. Since you turn by leaning, you can make very *tight* turns, which often makes up for the reduced speeds.

A trike/quad with a proper suspension design can maintain contact at higher angles of lean/higher speeds without losing traction, allowing you to take turns even faster than a motorcycle.

The drawback, however, is your acceleration. Since you increase your mass significantly, you'll need a bigger powerplant to outrun a motorbike on the straightaways.

All that said, I'd happily take one of these for a spin, and *then* make up my mind.

I'm sorry but I think that those you who feel that four wheels isn't going to afford the same benefit as two are simply mistaken. While I would agree that motorcycles may seem more nimble and quicker around the turns, they aren't. The problem with this "bike" is going to be cornering hard and fast. Thanks to the laws of physics, anyone going into a hairpin turn without a retraint at 140 mph will find themselves flying straight off the seat in the direction it was traveling before they moved the handle bars.

The idea that quads (what this really is just with taller, more narrow wheels and a killer design) will turn into street legal vehicles in the US would, of course, require revision of the vehicle safety regs. It could happen with the addition of another class of vehicle called something like "single passenger". But all the advantages people think of like being more fun, no special license or being like a motorcycle but safer will probably not be true. The nimble nature of two wheels will not be able to be even closely reproduced on four. An unprotected pilot on four wheels is just as vulnerable as an unprotected pilot on two. And there will likely even be another layer of driver certification on top of motorcycle and automobile endorsement. I like motorbikes. I ride every day. I probably would never own something like this but I applaud the idea because it will make building energy efficient easier and help congestion on highways and parking lots with their smaller physical footprint. I'd rather see a 80 mpg hybrid single occupancy vehicle like that than a sometimes-30 mpg single occupancy hybrid SUV bearing down on me in the rear view mirror. I doubt the idea will go anywhere fast in the US. It will require companies that already make cars as well as quads/bikes like Honda, Suzuki and BMW to champion the cause against the slothful US automotive industry that will fight a new 'double standard' of safety tooth and nail.

That bike will never be legal. Once a vehicle has four wheels it needs to meet NHTSA requirements and there is no way this think is going to meet crash requirements. If they made it so it didn't travel over 25 mph, this could be road legal. But what's the point.

If you read the article, it says it's capable of leaning into turns just like a regular motorcycle (albeit possibly not as much). Also, when the Tesseract is stopped, it locks the arms to keep it upright.

is it me or does that look incredibly unstable? For those of us who actually ride motorcycle, it would seem apparent that when you went into a sharp turn the extra 2 wheels would encourage a CRAZY roll. The only way I see this workng is if the two right tires lifted while the two left tires lowered during a sharp right turn n(reverse for left turns, obviously)- otherwise... be prepared to meet the sausage monster!

The Idepenent steering actually looks good, but here's hoping it actually works. The Dodge Tomahawk also had independent suspension, but for some reason, in every video of it I have seen, every time it makes any sharp turns, one of the rear wheels always ended up in the air.

But then again that was a Dodge and this is a Yamaha, so perhaps it's a grossly unfair comparison...

This'll take off in Europe, as there has been a surge in interest for quads for single person transportation. Makes sense too, as they don't use much more fuel than a motorbike, but have 4 wheels on the ground so are a bit safer for beginners.
