Last night I bought a brand new 80GB iPod Classic for my daughter at my local Target store.
When she took it out of the box, she found a used scratched 30GB older version iPod.
How could this happen? Target will not refund our money. They will not allow us to exchange it.
They are "investigating". Same with the Apple company. Meanwhile, my daughter is out $275.

This has to get out. People have to be made aware---caveat emptor.
Open all boxes and pakages INSIDE the store in front of the manager.
Otherwise, you may not get what you bought.

If you can help me with this, please do so.

scrutiny for the thief. However, if they fill it back up with rocks and replace the shrink wrap, it can make it past inventory controls all the way to some poor 14 year old girls hands before the crime is discovered and then there's no good way of knowing at what point it actually occurred.

I got it home and there was an old 1970's Wang keyboard in the box. I took it back to the store and security accused me of fraud and banned me from the store. The security guy told me I was an idiot f***head and should go to jail.

I wrote the CEO and was like, ummmm do customers now have to open up their purchases before leaving the store to make sure that what's in the box is actually legitimate? And if I were going to steal a keyboard, why the hell would I bring an old one back to the store? And why is your security man calling me an idiot f***head?

He fired 3 people the next day, including a man in security that banned me. They caught him on tape calling me that.

Anti-props to Gizmodo for not pointing out the ridiculous position Target took in sticking to a store credit policy and not offering a refund after the second rockPod, forcing the mother to buy her daughter something other than she wanted for her birthday. I'm betting they cut up their Target card whent they got home. I know I sure won't be buynig any electronics at Target - EVER.

Target should be ashamed for the way they treated this family. They should apologize and offer them a free iPod.

We pre-configured computers for businesses all over the country (anyone remember the company inacom?) so we would see a couple hundred computers pass through our doors each day.
We started getting IBM Thinkpad boxes that would contain large rocks instead of Thinkpads. Upon examination you could see where someone had cut the IBM security tape and then resealed with clear tape.
Curiously, all the "RockPads" had an extra sticker on the box "Hencho en Mexico" We reported the problem to our on-site IBM rep. Within a couple weeks, all the "Hencho en Mexico" Thinkpads had an extra set of thick plastic banding straps around them. No more "RockPads."

No real point to the story, but the rocks in the iPod just brought back some memories. Good times...
