As for the cannon yeah it may well not even be related to the gun itself but more the ammo and choice of firing method. Time will tell. I did some looking up and discovered that if this was indeed a GDF-005, then this is some seriously old technology. The weapon system was first fielded in 1985, meaning that the computer system is at least 22 years old. Knowing the common pace of defense industry computerization, it's more likely that the computer system involved is 29 or more years old.

The GDF-005 electronics package is described as a computerized sight package, usually indicating that the sight is calibrated by the computer to calculate the appropriate lead and elevation, then manually pointed to the right patch of sky by the crew. This is not always the case, of course, as defense tech jargon is frequently misused, especially by the defence agencies and contractors.

Several of the articles (seemingly taken from the same source) indicate that the weapon suffered a serious misfire and detonation, after which the weapon continued cycling while the mount swiveled randomly.

It's entirely possible that the computer in the loop wasn't even involved in the malfunction, that it was simply an electrical, electronic, or mechanical failure that didn't involve the sight package.

y'all crazy on this one. fact is, training accidents with live weapons is a not uncommon occurrence around the globe. had a sergeant tell me that one time back in mid 60s he was training some grunts on the .50 caliber (remember the one Rambo used?) and the receiver overheated, started firing the rounds from the heat alone, without needing the pin action. the grunt on board panicked, stood up with his hands spread apart like "wtf do I do now", meanwhile the gun was turning a little with each shot and was about to start spraying the grunts in line when my friend leaped forward and twisted the ammo feed belt, stopping the mechanism. Told me he had to clean out his shorts after that one. could have easily killed 9 soldiers, and that one was MAN operated, how do like THEM apples?

It doesn't take an engineering genius to install a mechanical stop on a turret so that they can demonstrate new systems in safety.

Most turrets have them already and a simple add on or adjustment can keep the barrel pointed in a safe arc even if the servos pushes it towards your audience.
