@i heart Apple: Perhaps I was unclear. I meant that the company line of wanting to keep third-parties out of iPhone was the company line that I wasn't quite buying.

Claiming security concerns is a bit dubious when a revenue stream is at issue. I stand by my assessment that Apple is trying to channel the revenue through iTunes rather than through independent third-parties as was the case with the Palm.

iTunes is Apple's bread-and-butter right now. It's a one-stop shop; why wouldn't they want to be able to have an exclusive toll-road for apps? It's the same reason why Verizon cripples Bluetooth on its phones.

Why the hell should YOU be scared of a lawsuit for something YOU purchased?. That is utterly ridiculous. That's like saying "I'm okay with a tax on shoes, because otherwise someone may suspect I stole them".

Canadians are excessively taxed in many areas - why shouldn't the Internet be included?

Honestly, I'm Canadian and I'm happy to pay a small tax and not be scared of a lawsuit for downloading.

This tax will most likely go into the "Canuck Music Scene" that helps re-enforce Canadian music. It sounds like a bad thing, but in the face of the powerful U.S. media it's kept much of our music alive.

@omg-ponies: I don't think Apple ever said OSX is hacker proof, but maybe I'm wrong. Of course Apple does tout its security, and security is a major focus of their desktop operating system. I suspect though that in their rush to get the iPhone out the door (i.e. pulling developers from Leopard thus delaying Leopards release) they did not put as much focus on security for the iPhone OS as they did for Leopard. For example from what I've read they have not implemented a multi user system, and are relying on jailing processes with chroot for system security which is a bad idea. My theory is that they just wanted to clean up the mess they made before things get any worse.

Even the most secure OS in the world can be configured insecurely.

The summary is a good idea, but I seem to remember a lot more happening last week; Sagem Porsche design phone, a bedroom jet simulator, keyboard for the disabled, HTC Cruise, beserk robot cannons, a slew of new phones for Verizon, $400 PS3 confirmed, Google Docs for mobile, bargain DSLRs, Apple iPhone dev kit, Nokia n810 announced... and that's just the latter half of the week!

@Philscbx: Odd to think that the iPhone is insecure as Apple keeps talking about how hacker-proof OSX is. While that's the company line, I doubt there's much truth to it.

I think a more reasonable assumption is that they want to be able to charge for the apps, which would likely be sold through iTunes. I imagine that there will be the same kinds of apps on the iPhone as there were in the Palm's heyday.

Look for pay versions of Vindigo or Zagat's, along with an iPhone version of Bejeweled, probably with a price point around $4 or $5.

Why, Giz, do you ignore what Vista does well (and what OSX fails to do)? Try playing commercial Blu-Ray/HD-DVD's in OSX. Try finding an integrated front end in OSX that has any thing close to the features of Media Center.
Applications? OSX is a joke compared to Vista choices.
By the way, I have four computers....the one I use the least is a mac mini.
