Hmm, here we go again with the mac vs. pc debate. The only thing with macs is that they can and do control the entire operation from hardare to software, so the end product is indeed more streamlined but you pay the price for it, just as you will if you buy a really nice pc. The way I see it:

If you are a OSX user, more power to you.
If you are a WINDOWS user, more power to you.
If you are a LINUX user, dude you just plain rock.

And what's with all the VISTA complaints, I've found it to be 100 times better than XP and more stable indeed. Vista is much more ahead of XP than Leapord is ahead of Tiger. Gotta hand it to Apple though, time machine rocks. Anyone know which linux app they copied that from? Sorry, couldn't resist :P

stallionz

@DeadWriter: It has nothing to do with having a good model. Apples OS is around to sell the hardware. If you pirate the software 99 percent of the time you already own a mac so they made their money. I'm sure they would love if you paid the 130 bucks for the OS too but its not the core of their business. Microsoft on the other hand is the exact opposite. Their core is software and they have some random hardware they sell to better the experience (excluding the 360 which is they only real "hardware" they sell) so to allow people to steal directly affects their bottom line. They are two separate businesses.

@Dearhaw: Uh, it's pretty simple:

Pender said:

"Don't worry, v.10.5.1 will brick them. It's all part of Uncle Steve's plan."

You responded to Pender with:

"Yeah, so totalitarian of them trying to lock down an OS that is constantly being improved upon for the sole purpose of selling their own hardware (as opposed to Dells, HPs, and DIYs), using R&D money generated through said hardware sales. I mean that would be like Microsoft trying to lock Halo 3 into the X-Box 360! Preposterous!"

I don't care what "side" you're on, because I'm not on one. If Apple pulls a douche bag move (bricking iPhones) they deserve to be dissed. In this case, you're both writing fiction since Apple has never bricked a desktop or laptop for using an unauthorized single license of version of OSX.

Instead of responding to my "wtf?" you attempted to deflect the issue by trying to bad point out grammar skills, calling me a troll, and idiot, etc. Of course, none of that crap can deflect the fact that you are completely wrong about what you and Pender stated. Just have some humility and own it because you don't have a shred of evidence to stand on.

@modernrocko: I'm pretty sure you can filter out things like iPhone articles on the Giz. Maybe even Apple news in general? Plus, there are plenty of other gadget blogs on the intertubes. If the Giz wrote a huge amount of articles about Vista, I'd still read 'em even though I don't use it...just out of curiosity. But, if you REALLY don't like Apple in general, you could track down Steve Jobs and even the score with a Bill Gates style pie to the face.

johnnyabnormal

I just don't see the reason gizmodo needs posts detailing every single ipod case that's released or found on the net. That's great, someone put skateboard tape on it, but is that really post-worthy? You can find a million different types of cases for a million different types of products. For instance, I don't see gizmodo featuring posts about all the new Zune cases coming out, do you?

Do a search for Apple and you'll find the first 30 results only date back to the 25th. Three days ago. Over thirty results for Apple in three days. C'mon, do we need a new post every time a tiny bit of new information is released about Leopard, or the iPhone?

"Leopard is coming!"
"Leopard is almost here!"
"Leopard soon, more info released!"
"Leopard is here! omg!"
"Steve Jobs wipes with Charmin!"
"Do u like ur iphone circle one: yes/no"

What about the new HTC phones? More multi-functional and feature-packed, but because they don't have multi-touch or a "fancy" onscreen keyboard, they don't merit posts?

I know you're excited, giz, but I'm reminded of my seven year old nephew when any new videogame he's interested in is about to be released. I never hear the end of it, and that gets old incredibly quickly. It's obvious that you like the products Apple is releasing, but broaden your horizons a little bit. Get rid of the tunnel vision. Please?

modernrocko

"It's a safety blanket to help PC users feel 'safe' when they switch to Mac"

All right, big Mac fan here, but that's just wrong.

Before I bought my Intel iMac, I HAD to have a PC so that i could use the following (non-gaming) software: ESRI ArcGIS, Golden Software Surfer, and AutoCAD (with SurvCADD module). There's is very little chance than any of those will get ported (back) to the Mac any time soon, and there really are no equivalents to them (don't start me on GRASS), so I am very happy to have Parallels (now moving over to VMWare) on my Intel Macs.

And, when I'd hit the road for a prolonged period, I used to carry around 2 laptops. Now all I need is my MacBook. Now THAT is a killer feature, that's not just a safety blanket.

Dearhaw

The comments on this post have almost completely degraded into name-calling. Can't we all just get along, guys? I mean, really, I love my Macs. I have no intention of ever owning a PC, because I've had to work with them at every job I've had and they are not nearly as easy to use, stable or beautiful as Mac OSX (any version and I've personally got 3 different versions running on 3 different Macs in my house currently). But that doesn't mean I'm going to issue personal attacks on folks who still think Microsoft rules. My brother's a Microsoft and Linux guy, ask him if I make fun of him. (Okay, maybe, but he's my brother. That's what little sister's do.)

FYI, Apple also releases security updates and patches periodically.

There is no software program available for PCs that doesn't either either work on Macs or have a Mac equivalent.

Apple doesn't follow the same numbering scheme for OSX as other software companies do. A .x upgrade from Mac is the same as a full number upgrade for Windows. When Apple does a full number upgrade it represents a complete look/organization/philosophy change. I've been using Macs through System 7, OS8, OS9 and OSX and changing to OSX was like learning a whole new operating system on a whole new platform. When Apple decides to go to OS11 I'm assuming it will represent a whole new direction for the company.

Other than changing the look of the Windows interface and making the OS more powerful and/or stable and offering some new features what does a full version upgrade of Windows change? I say this not to pick on Windows but to point out that Microsoft and Apple have a different idea of what a full version upgrade means. They can't be compared.

rsquared

Although a 7.5" Version of the iPhone, with a full OS X and a 1.8" harddisk would also do the job. Who needs a keyboard, if you can get ink? But I have been saying that for years, and either Apple is still too traumatized by their Newton experience or just too bloody stuck up with their current form factors to go out on a limb.

by TEEXCUE:
And I prefer paying $130 every 1 to 2 years to have an updated computer rather than waiting 6 years and finally getting an update for $400 =]

I really don't care one way or the other...but I'm all about numbers, and I don't like when they aren't right:

1) Vista doesn't cost $400 unless you don't know better. Any mentaltard can go on NewEgg, buy a $2 cable to qualify for OEM software, and get Vista Home Premium for $112 or Vista Ultimate for $180. (You'll notice I left out Home Basic, because most people agree it's pretty well neutered).

2) You seem to be saying the Apple OS system offers some financial benefit...but your math works out lousy. If you're willing to spend $130 every 1.5 years to upgrade the same machine for 6 years, you're spending 4x130 = $520 on new OS's AFTER your original purchase. To me, that's a lot. That's a whole computer for 95% of the "Dell" population. I build my own computers, and $500 goes a long way there too.

Mac or PC, I've never really seen the point in upgrading the OS on a machine that's working. I am a bit careful with money...but it just seems like there isn't much to gain by upgrading the OS of an old machine, and there's always the risk of getting slow performance with a new OS on old hardware. Just wait until your current machine is too slow for you, then get a new one with whatever OS suits you best at the time. For me, that time line ends up being about 4-5 years...so Mac or PC, there'd be a new OS available and who cares if there were a couple versions I missed?

EQC

I will try this, though I know it will be bricked in a short time. I have to admit that I have come a long way from never touching a mac to now having 3 in the house (though the PC's are still ahead). They both have their place in my house, now if I could consolidate them into one computer that would run each, with apps, at native speed, that is AWESOME! I also think that Apple will eventually go to the software model and be more cross platform. I have been beat up on this many times but if Apple would make Final Cut Studio for the PC it would be great. Better yet, give me a fully bootable Win/OSX PC with RAID 0 (2 TB), 8 Gigs of RAM, and a few extra TB's of space and that would seal the deal for me.

andrelix

This is something I may be willing to try, I tried to do it with OSX86 on Mac OS 10.4.9, but failed miserably, the setup was too complicated, I tried, and I got all the way to the apple logo and the setup process, and I used the correct Intel patch, but it never worked for some reason. Anyways, maybe a company like parallels should make a product to run OS10 on a pc legally and easily, then maybe Apple fan boys wouldn't be buying Apple hardware as much. For instance, everyone knows that if you want an actual tower for an apple computer, you either have to get an Imac, which isn't good for people with already great monitors, or you have to pay a fortune for a mac pro, so if they offered something like parallels for PC's, some mac fans would be either buying PC hardware pre-built, or build their own hardware, and then OS10 may become more popular.

Crazysamz
