There's something worrisome about possible political uses of any information gathered in these endeavors. If one retains political power (or an unfair financial advantage over others) as a result of having information gathered illegally then we *all* should probably be concerned.

With zero transparency we don't *know* what information is being gathered.

This is not the first president to say, and I paraphrase here, that he is not a crook.

We should promote transparency. And if what we're doing is "right" (legally and morally), there won't be a problem.

izzaboo

Let's see...if NO ONE ever gets arrested over a wiretapped conversation, then what's the use of wiretapping?

The whole point is that the entire deal is secret. Over 150,000 National Security Letters, and if you get one and talk about it, YOU go to Federal Penitentiary, if you're lucky.

It's amazing that the Canadian and German citizens who were whisked off to Syrian and Afghan torture chambers by the CIA were released to talk about it, but then, they had people who knew they were missing after their secret renditions, didn't they?

Auld_Lang_Ziety

@BobbyMills: That is an extremely dangerous and foolish mindset. History has shown, time and time again, that those who take the attitude of "Well I'm not guilty of anything so the authorities can do what they want" ultimately lose freedoms. And your clearly ignorant if you think the term "slippery slope" has anything to do with conspiracy theorists. Hint: Read the headlines about what's going on in Pakistan, Venezuela, etc.

I've actually visited AT&T's RTP site and met their NetSec team, who handle all of the abuse complaints and issues for AT&T (both source and target). I've worked in information security for years. There's very serious and real problems with wholesale monitoring of Internet communications.

It's not just about spying on US citizens. It's about a power imbalance. What assurances do we have that the people who can access all this information (e-mails, browsing histories, contact information, etc) won't abuse it? None. And what evidence do we have that it can be abused? Plenty.

Regarding the video clip, it's an excellent summary of the situation, but only from one viewpoint. Some anonymous insiders have said AT&T had no choice, others say that AT&T just got greedy. Here's a good summary of the overall risks of this sort of activity:

Jeff the Riffer

And if you read about how they do wiretaps, no ones names or personal data is recorded, your voices aren't recorded, it just keeps a record of two places and for how long that conversation took place and if they pick up some words that you used, they red flag it (like saddam hussein, al-queda, etc) Having people try and sue the crap out of the telecom companies is ridiculous, and is only for people trying to make a quick buck.

Will we ever learn that it isn't the initial implementation of a policy that poses the threat? It is what it morphs into over time, aka the slippery slope issue. What starts as looking for bad guys becomes a search for those who merely disagree while posing no threat.
In this case the bad guy's goal is to change our way of life by destroying things, inducing fear, etc. We are falling for it and changing our beliefs. I won't say they are winning, but they do seem to be gaining ground.
And the people forcing the changes are completely unaware they are being manipulated while convinced they are doing the right thing.
Be very afraid!
On the lighter side, the content sniffers aren't 100% effective and produce false leads. Those false positives are distributed down to a limited number of policemen and agents. Considering the massive amounts of data being sifted, even a small error rate quickly overwhelms the gumshoes on the street. The net effect? No improvement in security.
Can one treat kjrs (knee jerk reaction syndrome) with meds for restless leg syndorme? Big Pharma, where are you when we need you?
LOL!

dfwguy
