"good marketing idea"

its not really a marketing idea. It's my understanding that the creator of the project said flat out on several occasions that these would never be sold to the public. Call me cynical, but i think he only agreed to this because the price of the olpc is currently twice what it was expected to be, and he wants to alleviate some of that through any means possible.

I want to support OLPC and get a new system I can travel with that is less tethered to the power grid, but the pragmatist in me says wait for version 2.0 of the h/w.
Still I hope they burn through all 25,000 this week. 25,000 computers to the kids in a single country will demonstrate the XO and distributed networking benefits on a full scale in the developing world and help get the ball rolling for other governments to jump on board.
I'm rooting for the O-to-the-L-to-the-P-to-the-C.

It goes to those folks who feel they need some kind of "feedback" on their donations. Something they can show their friends to say, "hey look what I did for the kids!"

There are those who will donate money just to have kids get the computer. There are those who just want to own the system themselves, and will pay $400 to get it. Either way, I think the end result of a child getting a laptop is a good thing.
