After hearing many sides of the story and hearing many mixed feeling about the Amazon Kindle verdict, I am kind of in the middle. I am always ok with better technological advances to make life easier and ergonomics but the amazon kindle is a tough call for me. I am a heavy reader and find myself buried in books 24 / 7. Although I love to read articles and stories online also, i feel that a book is what I prefer. I like the feeling of flipping pages. Sneaking to the back of the book and taking glances. The smell of a book, the cracking ... I don't know how comfortable I would be with a device in my hand. Call me old fashioned. I am firm with my decision of staying with books!

I own one of these little beauts, and I absolutely LOVE it! You very quickly get used to the placement of the buttons, and not hitting them accidentally becomes almost second-nature very quickly. While I can't live without my two rooms which are completely lined with full bookshelves, and would never think of replacing them, this is so much easier to cary with me on trips and such. The airplane thing is not too much of a hassle, as I can carry the ONE device, and already have a nice selection of reading downloaded to the device. I don't need the wireless ON while flying... it extends the battery to have it off unless I absolutely need it anyway. The proprietary format is not much of a hassle for me, either, as I already own many ebooks, and kindle gives me the option to send them to my kindle address for free conversion. Delivering them straight to my kindle does cost me $0.10 per title, but if I do it beforehand, and don't need it delivered straight to the device, I can send it to my "free" kindle address, have it converted for free, and then it emails it to the email address I have on file with amazon. From there, I can USB it to the device. It's a little more convoluted, but it's free, and I think it's definitely worth it not to have to buy an ebook I already own, just because it's in a different format! With the SD slot taking up a 4GB card, there is tons of room on this thing... I can go on a two month trip out of the US where I have no signal at all, and never run out of things to read. I understand that for people who read the blogs, magazines, newspapers, etc, this may be a bit of a kicker, but plug it into any computer with an internet connection, and you have access through your amazon account... Voila!! I just can't say enough about it, I simply love it, and have recommended it to several people who read almost as much as I do, and wonders of wonders, they were skeptical about it at first, but they ended up loving it too. One person even got it on ebay, and only paid about a third as much as amazon sells it for! (This was due to diligent and savvy bidding, but if you want something bad enough, you're generally willing to work for it, yes?) Anyway, it's definitely got my vote! Waiting on Gen2 to come out to see if it's functionality and design warrant an updated purchase, but if it does, I'll just pass this one along to my daughter! (She already uses it constantly!) As for text books, you can find MANY text books in some ebook format or another, and even if it's not kindle's format, you can easily convert as described above!

drgnldy129927

What would Apple do? Exactly what I thought! I compare everything to "If Apple made that, it wouldn't be set up that way!" I can see an Apple version of Kindle with these features - state of the art exterior design - instead of looking like a beige PC ... either the Mac cool white/black look, or the aluminum/black look. Touch pad keys that worked flawlessly. Rapid scrolling. Color images. Optional back light to use for reading in dark places without finding a table light. The option of playing background music remotely from your home Mac, or browsing your photos and movies from your home Mac, at no extra charge. A built in stand, or a case enabling you to set it on your desk/table and read hands-free. A remote that would clip to your unit when not in use, but let you just tap it to turn the page or change a song. Sounds cool, doesn't it?? :-))

tennwalker15067

I definitely agree with ComicDork here: What would Apple do? The idea is awesome, but the product...it's iffy.
If they hired Apple to do the building for them, I'm sure it would be more popular, and would become something almost like the iPod.
Who knows what Apple would do?

slappy145

I used the Kindle, it's amazing technology. It can become any book you want it to be. I downloaded a regular book, a current copy of Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, Reader's Digest and an Irish Newspaper. Fantasti accomplishment by Kindle team. Navigation in documents is great and easy.

Guess what, the newspapers were 49cents when I downloaded them on December 26th. But on December 28th, the per/copy cost changed to 75 cents. Still, the convenience was very nice. In an instant I was reading opinion letters published in a Dublin Ireland newspaper. It was fun to read short clips and humor pieces in Readers Digest.

Periodicals that are known to be photo and graphically rich will be a disappointment until Kindle can handle the color images as well. The Time Magazine download lacked most of the graphics and pictures and made for a rather dry, Black & White reading experience. At one point a block of text was followed by a statement saying: "a detailed diagram can be found by referencing a hardcopy version of this magazine.." or something to that effect.

Purchasing books and periodicals is rapid and the charges go instantly to my Amazon.Com quick one-step purchase account that I have had for several years. BUT, the Kindle has no password protection. So if someone else picked up my Kindle they could purchase hundreds of dollars of books and periodicals in no time at all. And it woull all go to my credit card instantly without my approval.

The large page turn bars on sides are too too easy to hit by accident if you have big or clumsy hands. Frequenly I have changed pages by accident, and did not know if I had gone forward or backward. Another time, I was doing text entry in the experimental "ask a question" mode, and I hit the page turn bar and all my text entry was lost. I did this 3 times before getting it right. How? well, to get certain keys depressed, I had to twist my hands a certain way and would end up hitting the large page turn bars. It is at first hard to hold the Kindle without hitting the page turn bars. I handed my friend the Kindle to read a page, and sure enough, he turned a page when he held the unit in his hands.

The clips option is great--an ability to save any page to a clip file. But it is in crude form-- you can't remove individual clips, you can't index the clips file. It just becomes one big clip CLUMP! You remove the whole thing or keep the whole thing.

So, my hope is the next generation Kindle will resolve this.

This unit is one of the most amazing things to behold and use. Books, magazines, national newspapers all in your hands, instantly, with very moderate expense. The big users?? Frequent fliers. No more magazine and newspaper page turning. Hundres of books to choose from on long flights. Hats off to Kindle team! You did something great, in a great way.

rickwa

Since mine arrived I've found it easiest to handle by just leaving the leather cover attached (It would seem the reader would fall out, but it doesn't). I'm not sure why others find it necessary to take it off. With it on it's like reading a book, and for that matter, I sometimes catch myself reaching over with my right hand to turn the page (you almost forget it's an ebook). Did I mention that with the cover on, it's not easy to accidently hit the page forward or page back bars (for me with the cover off it's too easy to accidently hit those bars). Also, I think the cover would act like a buffer and keep it from breaking if I drop it. The cover also protects the screen when not in use (it has an elastic band to hold it closed). By the way, I find the Kindle a lot easier to read and manipulate than I do a book, whether in easy chair, lying in bed, or sitting at a table.

On receiving it I started by reading completely through the eManual. I found myself frequently explaining, "Cool" as I tried out the various features. Here's what I want when it comes to buying and reading a good book:

. I want to be able to, right here and now, go to a listing of top sellers, read reviews by book reviewers as well as by readers like me, and then read some of the book to see if it's what I really want. If I do indeed want it I love the idea of having it available it in less than a minute with no need to connect to my PC.

. I want to be able to read books when they first come out without paying the ridiculous prices demanded for new hardcovers. If I can get it for less than $10 I'll buy it, otherwise I'll wait 'til it's in paperback. So far, with my Kindle the NY Times Bestseller prices have all been less than $10.

. When I come across a word I'm not familiar with I want a definition now. When I read the definition and am interested in even more information I love the idea of carrying on further to Wikipedia. It's all quick and simple with the Kindle.

. When I come upon a page I'd like to reference back to later, I want to bookmark it and then quickly return to it. There are a couple of quick and easy ways to do that with this gadget.

. When I want to highlight, I highlight .. In this case, you just put a box around the lines of text you're interested in.

. When I want to write notes, I write notes .. In this case I can type them up and then have a symbol along side the text of interest that I can call up later .. Or .. I can just call up a listing of notes, and read my them independently of the page I was reading.

Some people love cruising through book stores and thus don't see much value in a Kindle. That's not me. I just want to get the book with no hassle, pay no tax on it, and then pay no handling/shipping charges (even though it costs less than Amazon's book store $25 minimum for free shipping).

This thing, to me, is well worth the $400 .. for exactly the reasons mentioned above. It's a small price to pay for what I consider to be a marked improvement in lifestyle.

KenJr

No Coverage in Rural States!

I bought a Kindle with high hopes. I live in Missoula, Montana, which is one of the largest cities in the state. It turns out that the wireless connectivity that the Kindle requires does NOT work in Montana. After several tech support calls they admitted that there is no coverage in Montana. There may also be no coverage in other states, such as Wyoming and Alaska. This means that the Service component of the device is useless, and that many, many people may be duped. I think this is bait and switch advertising, and I think Amazon owes people in Montana, as well as other non-coverage areas, an apology.

ssaroff

Thanks for a legitimately positive review. It seems like most people who like the thing are either Bezos or paid by Bezos, and the critical ones are all haters on the grounds that a) it's not cute (you don't look at the mantle when you're poking the fire...), and b) it doesn't take the place of their iKickPSPBerry or whatever. I'm a bibliophile, not a techie, with thousands of dead tree models lying around (it wasn't long ago that I laughed and/or shuddered at the idea of ebooks), but I'm eagerly anticipating the day--three weeks from now--when Amazon tells me my very own snowspeeder will be launched from Echo Base. We'll see how long it takes me to recoup my investment (26 or so new releases), and hopefully it doesn't become obsolete by then. I like the idea that Amazon is NOT making a profit on the $9.99 books, so you can save 15 bucks on a brand new book while sticking it to the man, in a sense. Of course, it would be nice to see Nabokov or Philip Roth or Pynchon or Salinger, but maybe later (when Oprah picks them, perhaps).

franklindelanorangutan

Incidentally, the way the segmented 'pointer/selection' display works is simple. It's a low-tech calculator style LCD. But rather than going from grey/green/white to black it goes from black to clear. Then, the backing is mirrored. You can see the segments/cells quite clearly. Whomever came up with that effect is a genius. It rocks. I'd LOVE to see more displays like that.

Buford T. Justice

The one area where Amazon screwed up and wasn't thinking was in device color. The display appears more gray because the mirror-LCD-indicator thingy to the left is 'whiter', as is the case. A black Kindle would fix that. I never thought the PRS-500 was 'grey' and it's the earlier gen screen that's not as good.

Make no mistake, if you focus on everything else, the screen looks a little grey. If you just read, it's great. It's *amazingly* readable. Any conditions you can read a book in, you can read this in. Also, everyone's bitching about the contrast but newsprint is FAR worse in that respect... and I don't see people complaining about the contrast of newspapers. As with anything else, proper lighting enhances readability but it works in non-ideal situations as well.

Buford T. Justice

I'd be all over this if Amazon offered a subscription service for books instead of paying for each one. Since I like to have a tangible book to put on a bookshelf or read by the fire, the only thing I would do with this is read blogs/newspapers/magazines and download a book periodically if I needed it immediately or wanted to research/reference something. I figure with all of the subscription music sites, 29.95 a month for unlimited - but not permanent - downloads would do the trick for most people.

BigSlide

@Wilson Rothman: Did you really find it as easy to read as a book? That's the biggest complaint I've heard, that it doesn't actually replicate a printed page. Maybe that criticism is unfounded, but I wonder how you'd feel reading with this thing after 50 books, not just one or two.

Beyond screen resolution, there's just something about it that seems bloodless and antiseptic, making reading a joyless chore rather than a warm, cozy and, when scanning newspapers and magazines, efficient pleasure. If you were on a hammock in Hawaii, would you rather read from dead tree pulp or a Kindle?

Also, does it not bother you that the Kindle communicates every page you've read, every highlight you've made, and every comment you've written into it back to Amazon? Shouldn't reading patterns and annotations be exempt from monitoring and non-local storage (unless chosen)? As I understand it, there is no opt-out for Amazon to regularly send your reading habits, highlights and annotations back to the mothership.

As for selling out, I'm not surprised. Amazon is pimping the kindle on virtually every page of their site.

I don't mean to sound cynical. I'm all for electronic readers. I guess I just see the Kindle as a harbinger (or complement at best) rather than replacement for slaughtered trees in its current incarnation.

frigg

Bean books has it right. when you buy one of their hardcovers, you get a disk with the e-version of the novel and a bunch of other stuff.
I would settle for getting the e-version of any book I physically buy. That way I have a something to read and put on my bookshelf, and I also something to put in my Palm to take with me and read when I am out and about.
This reader seems a good as anything, despite the bizarro downloading and DRM hoops the reader jumps through.
I'm not sure how Baen deals with DRM, but they are on the forefront of giving stuff to readers to get them interested in everything else Bean has to offer.

AdmNaismith

Agreed about the contrast issue; background is still too grey. I know E-Ink is working on screens with higher contrast, so the technology is getting there.

Regarding price; if and when the technology catches on, the price of these things will drop.

Regarding backlit screens; focussing on large amounts of small text for hours on end on a backlit screen is not enjoyable for most folks. That's the whole point behind the technology. Having said that, I do agree that it would be nice to have dimmable backlight for cases where ambient light is unavailable.

I am a heavy reader too, and I am pretty excited about where this technology is going. I travel a lot for work, and it would be sweet to have a number of books on hand without the bulk of paper.

GregH

Just like ERRATAPAGE said, these things really, REALLY, need a backlight. I can't understand why more people aren't getting all uptight about this.

I love to read in bed, and my wife is very sensitive to book lights. I've tried at least six different kinds of book lights and they all keep her awake. The only thing that ever worked was my old Treo 650, since I could download ebooks (from the library) and watch them with the backlight turned quite low. I found it to be very legible in a dark room, and my wife could sleep soundly.

If the Amazon or Sony reader had a dimmable backlight, I would buy one immediately, but until then, no deal.

zgecko

I bought a Sony eReader in September, so let me share some observations that relate to the Kindle.
- I found the screen very easy on my eyes - completely different than reading on a PC. I haven't had problems with it in low light.
- Since I'm a fast reader, I found the need to keep hitting the "next" button a bit annoying. After many hours of use, my thumb ached a bit.
- The biggest strength of the Kindle is content. The Sony is AWFUL where interesting content is concerned.

I bought the eReader to take on vacation (I travel 4 - 5 weeks a year). A 9 ounce device is a phenomenal space and weight saver compared to the many paperbacks I would otherwise carry. I hate that I need to scrounge to find content for two vacations a year.

If the Kindle comes down in price and real content is available, I'll buy one in a year or two and not worry much about the details.

My eReader and Asus eee are one sweet combo.

Ikat

Question: What advantage does this product have over my mobipocket reader on my blackberry (except for availability of books)?

My blackberry is back lit, the font is adjustable, and the wheel makes it fairly easy to use.

I am a voracious reader (4-6 books a week). About half of the books I read are ebooks. The rest are from a book rental service. I buy maybe one book a month, these days.

Great review. I really like my Kindle a lot. I think Amazon did a lot of things right and there are a few improvements that could be made. If the thing was a charcoal gray or black, I think 90% of the "it's ugly" comments would not exist. I'm an Apple fan and I still think the look, once you have one in your hands, isn't bad at all.

I'm surprised by all the negative and mostly uninformed comments the Kindle has gotten. I think Sony and the book printing companies might be behind a lot of it.

AintLDS

Hmmm, let's see. $400+ $10/title for at best a transitional technology that still can't beat the nearly perfect interface of a printed book.

The only ones who seem to benefit from a Kindle are the publishers and distributors (Amazon) who get Kindle users to pay for the companies to reduce their marginal unit costs to zero.

I think we'll see substantial adoption when either a) Amazon starts giving them away for free, or b) the product provides a substantially better interface than a paperback.

ndonahue

I second the comment about the Economist - that's 100+ pages of dense text arriving every damn week, on top of whatever else I read. Having it it delayed by the ost office from Saturday to Monday can make it hard to finish one before the next arrives; just a year of the Economist is a quarter of the cost of one of these devices.

If it arrived automagically the same time every week, in a single format I could hold onto that weighed (about) as much as the paper form - great! And that form could hold more books - great!

I really think of this thing more as a magazine/newspaper physical replacement. It's better than sitting at a PC.

It just needs more content that I specifically want - if there were more small press or cartoonists producing material, I'd be all for it, even if I had to subscribe. I mean, hell, I mostly just get the newspaper for cartoons these days.

fupjack

Also, is there some way in which we can make this benefit local bookstores? If, for example, we can browse local bookstores for books, and then buy our online wares with a product key that lets the supplier know where we saw the thing. If people just buy online, no one's ever going to browse locally anymore.

Pope John Peeps II

My biggest concern, after the price, is the contrast of the screen. I absolutely love the idea of the e-ink display. Reading on a CRT or LCD is just too hard for me to do for more than ten minutes at a time, but the background on the current e-readers is too dark for me.

If Amazon could lower the price, increase screen contrast, and straighten out the format compatibility, I'd be all over it. The physical appearance doesn't bother me a bit.

Improbable

What I think will eventually lead me to ebooks is when they are bundled with paper books. Buy from Amazon, B&N, Borders, whoever and get a code for the ebook version, as well. That way, when I am home, I can use my paper books and when I am in the Law Library or in the Coffee Shop studying/reading/relaxing, I can bring my eBooks.

However, I will be far more impressed when textbooks become available for the Kindle or Sony reader. I am sick of carrying my Law books around everywhere and I would love something with the convenience of the Kindle to handle textbooks. That would be worth the price premium for me.

My biggest concern is the price of the books - $9.99 or thereabouts... i don't know about other people but...
I hate to buy (or at least pay a lot for) things that I don't know whether i'll like or not. ((targeting impulsive buyers and over-pricing 'new' items is the devil's work - 'devil' meant in a bad way)) -- however...
I really like to buy 'nice' deluxe versions of things that I really like/ have profoundly impacted me, etc., and can, of course, display on my bookshelf, etc.
The ideal solution?? - pay $0.99 for the first four chapters, then an additional $4.00 for the rest of the ebook, then have the opportunity to apply that $4,99 to the 'tree-corpse' version at the site. Hasn't anyone (media distributor) learned anything from iTunes? ((Or are they just in denial that this is the only business-model that a wise, wide audience will accept - and that we refuse to be hosed in to overpaying for things that can be distributed at next-to-nothing -- stop trying to get rich media distributors!))
I would be willing to bet that the huge amount of 'hits' from allowing the $0.99 preview would lead to way more $4.99 purchases and far more tree-corpse 'deluxes' to get passed around -- which means a lot more people get exposed to a lot more reading which means selling more of it all, and so on -- unfortunately, at that point, i suppose, the media distributors, can, i guess get a little bit rich.

designguybrown
