So there you have it, straight from the horse's mouth...not a big deal, which is exactly what some of us have been saying from the beginning. Now, are you and your friends going to write back to him insisting that he admit to it being "omg, amazing, fabulous, totally cool, like wow?"

@gee2: I love how people always group societies as ones. Especially this American stuff. Its its similar to saying all Germans are Nazi's.

On another note, I sent a note to Tom (president of Bruton Stroube Studios), his words...

Whatever one thinks of the impressiveness of the results, this was not an unusually expensive production. The image was produced, not for profit, but to use as an invitation to a paintball party we were throwing for some friends and clients. The components of the set already existed from a previous shoot (that, by the way, was profitable) and we simply used our staff to produce the image for the invite. It was quickly done and really was no big deal. We just thought it would be fun to post a movie on it. It was our first effort at posting a production movie and, frankly, I'm surprised at the large reponse we're getting. I guess it's a big world out there. Thanks for your inquiry.

Tom

rainfever

Maybe the difference is cultural. In America, people go geegaw over the most mundane things, and hand out accolades like they are going out of style. "Great job" is used to reward not-so-great jobs all the time, and losing teams get trophies and mousy middle managers get appreciation certificates all the time. In the same way, most of the Americans on here probably feel that a poorly composed, somewhat decently edited, but poorly conceived and mediocrely executed picture deserves an "Oh wow! That's Amazing! Too cool!" reaction.

Really, the test would be to put it up for sale, and see if it even breaks even. All you guys who claim to love this pic, let's see if you can pool enough money together so the artists can make a profit. I doubt you would be willing to put your money where your mouth is. And I doubt the company is getting incremental revenue from this picture to pay for its creation.

Before you all get your panties in a bunch, maybe we should collaborate on an online effort to print up some award certificates for these hardworking creative folk who have brought such splendor to our screens.

gee2

@MMR I'm not really that impressed either with the paintball photo. The white background etc makes it so easy to photoshop. Just paste the shooter into the clearly white background...ooh..ahhh. Pleeeease! Impress me with photoshopping him onto a busier background such that you can't tell he was put there. As a photo it's cool, but just not impressive to me. I liked your photo MMR despite the obvious defects in the quality, which with some touch ups could be cleaned up to look even better.

yougottabekidding

Nobody said it wasn't decent. But a whole lot of people can do a whole lot better than "decent" with minimal effort. And this took a LOT of effort. For a very contrived final result. Glad you like it, though.

I do have stuff saved up. Some of it is even online. But pointing you to it would reveal my identity, which I don't want to do. I could go to the trouble of setting up some anonymous account somewhere and hosting it, but I can't be bothered.

gee2

@DSaddict: Yes, stock Tippmann, but the paint is stock, too. The non-pro Custom's have been available in black, camo, or silver, for several years. You can even get them at Wal-Mart now. I will say, though, that I think they could have used a different marker, or have at least upgraded this one with a different barrel or hopper. It just could have looked THAT much cooler. And the stock barrel is indeed crap, but I won a tourney with it. Not woods. You don't HAVE to be that close. You just have to not suck.

I will say that it's nice to see them actually using a facemask. That is, by far, the biggest peeve of mine (not wearing proper protective gear whilst using paintball in your ad/t.v.show/movie).

As far as the welt, they obviously had the pressure turned up too high, but 280-290 feet per second is the standard, although, 250 would leave that much less of a mark.

And I do get out much... to play paintball.

pushmonk

Anyhow, it's a cool picture but I do wonder what's the point of it?
It's a nice image. They've put way too much effort into it, maybe, but the outcome is OK. And if they got paid for it, what's the problem?

I also dabble in photography and image manipulation every now and then, and I would have taken a different approach to the image, starting with less equipment and adding as needed.

@gee2: Oh well, you know, I was just hoping you could tell me where I might have seen one of your works. But it's cool, I understand, you just want to spare me from seeing something so powerful. Not to mention that it would be absurd to think someone would save a copy of ANY of their works. Perfectly understandable.

On the other hand, one could speculate that you might have just wanted to say something bad about a picture someone else actually did well on. I'm not saying it's a work of art or anything, but you can't deny that it's at least decent. Can't let something go without saying you could do it better though, eh?

I'm not saying you can't do it, but if you're going to call someone else out for no other reason than to bash their work it would look a whole lot better if you had something of your own to show why it deserves it. I'm just saying that I see this picture posted here on Gizmodo and all I see coming from you is venom and jealousy.

SCBEE

ok, for all of those that think that they are such good photographers and so good in photoshop.... I have a question for you:

Why don't you start doing advertising photography and charging huge amounts of money for what you do in just a couple of minutes???

This photoshoot is not about doing just copy and paste, its about production, getting everything as the clients wants. its about quality, not just some cute photoshop trick like getting the same guy three times in a picture. (poorly done)

I do this kind of work for a living and I am used to this kind of comments from people that think that they can do the same thing with ther $300 camera and their cute computer they got in christmas.

So.. please, if you really can do something like that, please go ahead and do it. Believe me, you can earn thousand and thousands of money for just a day of work.
If you can't.... well, just say "nice picture".

edgardo

@MMR,
awesome. That's exactly what I was trying to say as well. You can tell when something is good. And it should not be immediately obvious how to compose/create/edit it to complete novices.

@SCBEE
Guess what, I am not a professional. But I tinker with images in photoshop as a hobby and it gets printed/displayed/sold all the time. A lot of it is hanging at friends' houses, a lot of it has been paid for by corporations and is no longer my property.

Anyone can do it. You just have to practice and get over your mental blocks. And there are tons and tons of cool tutorials on the web.

I am working on a poster for Darfur fund-raising, but generally I fiddle more with video now. I just got done with a ten minute film that took 48 solid hours to edit, and am now producing something for an independent channel in the San Francisco area. It's not done yet, but when it is, I hope to have it on the web. Subject is gullible children being exploited by prosecutors who wantonly accuse people of child abuse on the flimsiest of evidence, or on the basis of completely made up stories.

I am hoping to convey a stark look/utter bleakness (because really, there is nothing happy about this subject) while retaining vivid color and imagery--you can let me know if I succeed. I do hope to get paid for this work but I still don't consider myself a professional in the field--I hold down a full-time job selling medical equipment.

gee2

What they did was not hard, just time consuming. Is it a cool shot? Sure, but I can think of other shots that are a lot cooler that were taken with just one shot and minor color correction. Maybe you have seen this shot before... [farm1.static.flickr.com]

This is nothing. Seriously, as a professional photographer, my
comment is that it took way too many shots to achieve the "desired"
results. With strobe lighting, that should have been three shots, three
layers, and done. I do this type of thing for Christmas cards all the
time. Doing this on location is hard. Doing this with temp-controlled
lights in a studio is not.

hobobobo
