He was just trying to recoup the fee he gave up. It wasn't until Kenner sold empty toy boxes for Christmas that anyone realized Star Wars merchandise was a magic goose that could crap out gold eggs.

I knew something was up with the new ones when Kasdan didn't write the scripts. And I got confirmation when Lucas said he wouldn't even trust Speilberg with his "vision". There was initially talk that Lucas would direct Ep.1 with other directors for 2 and 3.

Breakfast cereals (C3po's), crappy saturday morning cartoons (Ewoks and Droids), Muppets show tie-ins, The Holiday Special, etc. It always WAS a merchandising machine.

I find that the people that grew up with Star Wars as a kid and are now disappointed in the newer offerings too often put the original on a pedestal. The original series had it's share of crappy dialog, bad acting and annoying creatures as well.
