@timerider42: .mov and .avi are both container formats. i could easily fill either with something that wouldn't work for a large number of people. it is what goes into the container that is important.

@singfoom: Licensing fees are a big reason hardware manufacturers and media companies won't use certain codecs. This is a problem with DivX and a big reason XviD exists, correct? MP3 is a shining example of an inferior codec WITH licensing fees that everybody insists on continuing to use (if you're going to go lossy why not at least AAC?)

As for which codec to use instead: I don't see much problem with h.264 in an mp4 container. PS3, PSP, and any Apple product will be fine with that. Do Microsoft products have a problem with this combo?

@Padriac: Divx and Xvid are pretty high quality for low space codecs. They're widely used because they are the best out there. Of course there's not a pirate contract by definition. What codecs would you suggest? WMV or some other closed garden codec like it? Your line of logic can also be used to ask the question of why aren't the hardware manufacturers and media companies enabling all codecs and releasing media in all codecs. That would stop the consumer pain as well.

@OldSchoolGadgetLover: Well that is the question then, Mr. Snark, why the hell do people keep encoding in DivX and XviD when device support is such a thorn? I'm not asking for people to all do the same thing I'm just asking why they seem to love to create this infinite loop of pain for seemingly no reason. Why the hell can't the pirates upload in a friendlier codec? Is there some secret pirate contract with DivX or something?

everything i download is in DIVX format. it's fantastic that if you burn them to disc the XBOX will read them.

however, i prefer to leave the DIVX files on my computer and use the file serving and transcoding tools built into the latest version of WINAMP. it works really well in spite of a slightly outdated processor.

Its great to see that they're finally updating the 360 with Divx and Xvids, but it seems that means nothing to those of use with MCE machines using the 360 as an extender. According to this chart [www.shacknews.com] I still have to transcode my Xvids and Divx files on my MCE before streaming them. I wonder if a MCE update might be coming along to fix this soon?

I, for one, am just happy that they will start showing the movie previews in full screen. That little box was really irritating. Of course, it would be nice if they made more movies available (not just crappy horror movies). I like being able to download movies in HD instead of walking the aisles of Blockbuster or waiting for movies to arrive by mail. Buh-Bye to Netflix and video rental chains!

I have U-Verse right now which is IPTV. AT&T uses Microsoft's IPTV software to run their product/service/network.

It was demo'ed back in the spring that Microsoft was going to include the IPTV update. Essentially, with the update, it's acting as a settop box while on XBOX Live.

If people would just stop encoding in divx/xvid in the first place then the problem would solve itself over time. Why not encode in something where you don't have to wait on pins and needles for your device to support it?

i'm US military serving in Japan and entire section of Xbox Live is useless...

i'm not the only one and have been very vocal ever since the region lockout but there seems to be no changes to the policy what-so-ever...

it can't be that hard to open up video service based on user id instead of user ip...

Small update: full-screen previews. Megaton update: MPEG-4 Part 2 video codec support. Specifically, MPEG-4 Part 2 ASP (advanced simple profile) and SP (simple profile) in an AVI container. What does that mean to us humans? Greenberg decodes, "What that basically means is that our users should find that most of their DivX and Xvid files will work because they're under that umbrella of the MPEG-4 Part 2 codec."
